One of the oldest universities in the world, Federico II in Naples, established in 1224, asked me to perform a Neapolitan song translation for their annual Fulbright meeting. Being a Fulbright fellow myself, I gladly accepted and got to work on translating one of the most beautiful Neapolitan songs in my opinion.
This is 'O Surdato 'Nnamurato (in Neapolitan language, A Soldier in Love). The Neapolitan words were written by Aniello Califano and the music was composed by Enrico Cannio in 1915. The song describes the sadness of a soldier who is fighting at the front during World War I, and who pines for his beloved. The English lyrics were written by me in 2024
