I have been saying for years that living in this environment is making us mentally and physically ill. We need more in life than to be in survival mode working 2 jobs for 40 years and dying. We are curious and creative. Humans want community and to fit in somewhere. Society is structured around consumerism and always working and being the best and working the most. The people who can't keep up with these expectations fall out of society and are demonized for struggling and unable to perform the 2 or 3 jobs to keep a roof over their head. It is complete BS>

I'm a 5'10 woman and sooo relate to you about to unapproachability. I think tall women kind of occupy a masculine space (in the eyes of other people) and it makes us seem intimidating. It was even more noticeable when I had short hair and didn't present as traditionally feminine (even though I've always percieved myself as very feminine and warm). I think other women are intimidated by us because we literally have to look down at most of them to talk to them and men are intimidated because we're kind of in their lane physically and whether consciously or unconsciously, we don't seem as easy to dominate

Katherout, I'll be curious to see if more and more people start approaching you now to make conversation. I think when we're in high "achieve" mode and always on a mission to accomplish something, we subliminally give off a vibe that we don't want to chit chat and "waste time." Please keep us posted on your journey. Love your videos and your message!

Gentle reminder that sometimes people are depressed in the summer when they're seeing their friends and everything is going "well". I'm so glad you're feeling better! I know this probably isn't what you're saying, I just get twitchy anytime someone approaches the line of "you don't need antidepressants, you need to go for a walk/go for a hike/etc". Capitalism sucks but disability is also a real thing

it goes both ways, i think. capitalism often disables people because of the oppressive, constrained limitations it puts on our lives and the way we move through the world. of course physical and mental impairments have existed since the dawn of time, but disability itself is constructed by our ableist society. those are my politics on the matter at least!
@amberburch152
@amberburch152 2 жыл бұрын
@@Katherout I agree with your politics, but I'm still a bit conflicted I think. Mostly because I do feel better with my medications, and that has been consistent for me in wildly different live situations. Even if society wasn't ableist I think I'd still feel dramatically better with them. This is something I've struggled with a lot, as have other depressed/anxious folks I've met. It's like disability imposter syndrome. Am I really depressed? What if I don't have an anxiety disorder everything is really terrible? It can lead us into really bad mental places. Especially when the answer is yes, this is really happening to us, even when well meaning family members are trying to convince us that we just need to go for more walks. Just wanted to share a bit of the impact. I don't know how you feel about content warnings but I think this video potentially warrants one.

I used to have people walk up and spill their life story to me and in many instances it made me uncomfortable because it was unwanted. over time it wore on me. I was assaulted various times and followed home once. I gained a bit of weight and grew older. I became hardened. I stopped dressing as showy. I avoided catching people's gazes. I went about my errands in an officious manner. I got a bike and stopped taking transit or walking. But sometimes I miss it. The attention but also the comraderie. But then one odd bad experience will re-harden that protective shell. I don't know. I don't know which is better. To be magnetic or to be safe in my loneliness.

I completely agree with your analysis of the "mental illness" situation (not implying people aren't really suffering--that's real), speaking as someone who has struggled with those issue my whole life. I came to the same realization about my own antidepressant use, and I'm so happy to be off. I also believed for a long time that I was chemically imbalanced, but now I see that it was indeed environment, but I was gaslit by family, friends, and society into thinking I was the problem. I'm so happy you're doing well with the changes you've recently made. I still feel down from time to time because of all the trauma I've experienced (as well as the state of the country/world), but luckily the brain has neuroplasticity, and it has an amazing capacity to heal. Be kind to yourself while withdrawing off Wellbutrin, but I'm glad it's going okay so far. Take care.

I feel you man. I'm not a 5'10" woman; yet I also have suffered from the "unapproachability" auora as well. I can tell you from my experience it's definitely something that stems from how uncomfortable I am in crowds and what not. I guess I'm so uncomfortable that I put off bad vibes that others easily pick up on. Almost like how if you're afraid of a dog they'll sense that and be afraid of you. My wife on the other hand is right at home in big crowds and what not and she'll not only have people approaching her but I swear everywhere we go together there's always someone wanting to gift her something for free. She's also well above average height for a woman ... so I don't think this unapproachability aura has much of anything to do with stature.

I definitely think the purpose of making such a car centric society was to keep people from congregating and communicating with each other, and to make money. I live a 5 minute drive from the grocery store but there is literally no way to walk there without walking on major roads with no sidewalks and there’s no public transport. Car dependency has been forced on Americans and it has so many benefits for capitalists. Everyone with car payments, everyone paying registration, everyone paying for gas, everyone paying for maintenance, everyone paying for insurance, and everyone totally isolated so they don’t know if others think it’s crazy too. Plus,You cant start a revolution if you’ve don’t even know your neighbors.

Lmk about these approachable pills bc I'm 5'4 and apparently unapproachable and intimidating. But when people get talking to me (I'm southern but live in the north), I'm a warm + inviting person, it's just something else about me ig LOL and masks don't change anything either, neither does how much makeup I wear (I do a lot of colorful/avant garde makeup and happily wear it out or am completely bare faced/wearing very light makeup and still... No approaching). Men will approach me weirdly but I don't entertain that behavior, I never get the friendly people, just creeps 😭😭😭

I am a 6'1 female, and I have heard in the past how I have been intimidating, but once they get to know me I am not at all. On the other side of that, I seem to attract the strangest people that feel then need to come up and just vent about life, or make odd comments that make me uncomfortable. I am intimidating to some, and overly approachable to others. I don't mind either way, there are times I just want to blend in, but most of the time I am comfortable with myself navigating through this existence.

The approachability issue is definitely related to your height - and - not an aura thingy. People - for the most part - are a tad "socially insecure" - especially during covid. You're lucky on this issue, in that, the people that do approach you are the people that "you" want to get to know.

Im glad you realized and stated that things around us are designed to disable us . I try to tell my friends and family certain songs , movies , and even foods we eat aren’t healthy and slowly affecting us negatively. Theres other things of course like your social circle , and things like that but im glad your mentioning how outside things affect us. Also no its not abnormal that you traveled around the way you done in this video . If you study other cultures outside of the USA they dont mind other forms of travel outside of a car thats an American thing and its pretty shallow to be honest.

oooh Did you taper off your NDRI at all? How long does the NDRI ( Wellbutrin) built up stay in your system before you start feeling it? Is an NDRI as addictive as an SSRI? did you get any malaise stopping your NDRI? Really really really surprised your psychiatrist did not give you a "tapering off" schedule. If you were on it for one year, you should give your brain one year to readjust ( just like pregnancy, sometimes it is a bit longer to come back to normal and still, you are not quite the same really)\ Maybe your psychiatrist did not taper you off on purpose. if you experience malaise, you will call him and beg him to go back on it. You see all the people living on the sidewalk thanks to the Sackler family rebranding opiates as non-addictives in 1990? All through the 1960s, and 1970s 1980s, doctors would tell you that cigarettes were not addictive and the reason you could not quit was that you lacked self-discipline. Tapering off SSRi :Lexapro from 20 mg . for your readers tapering of Lexapro. At the end when on the 2.5 mg, do not jump off, the step is too big, instead use a nail file to file off a little bit of that tiny 2.5 mg, a little bit more every day until only dust is left. That should help with the Lexapro ( SSRi) withdrawal malaise.

Hey! I almost never leave comments on KZbin videos but in this case I felt compelled to leave a personal anecdote. I thought I was in a great place in my life to go off of my meds! I did so, and the first few months were great, I felt amazing. However, after everything got out of my system I found myself slipping back *fast*. I became severely depressed and even suicidal very quickly. It turns out that, personally, I just really do need to be on certain medication to level out my brain chemistry. This is obviously only my experience! I just hope you, and anyone else who tries this, are really careful and monitor yourself closely. Maybe keep someone close in your life updated with what you're doing and how you're feeling so they can keep an eye out for you as well. I wish you the best of luck with your journey!!

@Askalott
@Askalott 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you had that experience. That could be the result of a lot of different factors. Hope you're doing well now. I was suicidal for a lot my life, and I tried all different kinds of antidepressants, and at first I felt good, but over time they made me even more destructive than I already was. After some extremely traumatic events and a lot of soul searching, I realized my brain chemistry was fine and that my life experiences had caused me to want to end my life. I went off antidepressants, faced my trauma, learned to live a life that was true to myself, and my mental health has only continued to improve over the years, and I never thought that would happen. I think it's different for everyone, and there may be a benefit for some people, but at this point in time we as a society are definitely overprescribing rather than underprescribing, so I don't want people to be fearful of questioning the use of these medications. Question everything.
@Katherout

this is indeed part of it for me! i think i'm in a great place in my life to go off meds and given how many other medications i'm on i thought it would be nice to reduce some of the side effects from medication. i wanted to verify -- am i still depressed without the medication? i talked in an earlier vlog about the rate of reoccurrence of depression which i'm well aware of, but i'd rather go on the medication when i really need it in those instances as wellbutrin started to curb its impact after 6 or so months for me.

You were kind of on the right track with the social model of disability. But it’s more about, if we build a more accessible and equitable society, people can still be mentally ill but there will be systems in place that protect and care for them. Not: an accessible and equitable society will cure mental illness. Another example, I am a wheelchair user and am Disabled by an inaccessible world. If the world was perfectly accessible, I would still be a wheelchair user but would be able to access things more. Hope that makes sense. It’s very nuanced!

Hearing you talk about your life as a pedestrian and your unaproachability really is a look inside the American life. I can't even imagine people eating in their car in my little country unless they're going on a road trip. And having people approach you like you mentioned is so foreign to me, but I actually love it when it happens! I hope it happens more to you, because it seems lovely 😊

I live in the UK and people are so chatty here but yeah, it's certainly not remarkable to eat your takeaway on a bench and I can't imagine someone commenting on it. People do have cars here but the world isn't that car friendly, like I don't know of any drive-throughs (almost UK people please feel free to correct me, maybe there is one?) normally parking in scarce so when you go into town you go on the train or drive but park miles away, you can't just live your whole day in your car. Most shopping areas are walking only and even if there's a road you can drive on it has little to no parking. I agree you'd only eat in your car on a road trip. I find Australia very similar to what Kat described though. Being a pedestrian outside of the city centre is a bit of a novelty, unless you're walking your dog.

@@alexwood3459 I'm from Belgium and what you describe is very similar to my experience! Except that people just aren't chatty here. You would be considered odd or even threatening of you start talking to people in the street. I find it sad, because even in like a restaurant or a shop, people will do no small talk.

I wish…chronic depression and anxiety aren’t always circumstance related and depression can still be there when everything is seemingly perfect. I’m really glad going off your meds has been so positive ☺️❤️

One thing that works great for my mental well being is lifting heavy weights at the gym and intense training. It releases all of those natual feel good chemicals. Really calms my anxity and boost my mood. I don't deal with depression but this deff helps with stress

I'm a large male and most people do not approach me for convos. That's actually a good thing bcuz you can be the initiator of convos with who you feel like having one with and when you feel like. You just have to start taking control and do it more

I think you’d be interested to read “breaking off my chemical romance” by P.E. Moskowitz !! It’s an article in the Nation and it was popular and making the rounds on the internet several months ago. There’s a very good chance you already read it, heck you may have already talked about it in another vid, but just in case you hadn’t seen it !

1:31 - *snort*... yes, well.... Let me just say, I appreciated the absence of such juxtapositions in the prior 3 vids. :) 15:20 - I've not done this specific itinerary, but I've had close enough experiences to say: you're doing it right. :) 18:19 - hey, pedestrianism sounds like a pretty benign pill! I say run with it. That and (and I wouldn't normally suggest this, but as a specific response to the question at hand, I will): just smiling at folks. Or nodding a greeting or the like. Seems to work for me.

implying work is the full reason for one’s depression is pretty ableist. even someone who is social, going out in the summer, doing hobbies, etc can still be depressed. also - meds are not a bad thing. they’re a really useful tool. it sounded like a lot of med shaming when you were saying “well it’s been two weeks and i’m not depressed anymore!” or “i don’t need them in the summer” when you know full well that’s not how chronic illness operates. and encouraging others to do the same is dangerous. yes - i’m all for lifestyle shifts. but someone can have the perfect lifestyle and still need meds and that’s okay.

I didn’t see any shaming in the video, I think they were speaking to their specific experience and feelings that they may have about it. I think we can have differing experiences and acknowledge that someone else’s experience doesn’t invalidate your own.

16:26 I get the "approachability" problem. Men are usually less approachable than women because men have more dominant physical characteristics, like height. I have to admit that as a guy, I'm very intimidated by tall women. In the same way that I'm intimidated by tall guys. I feel like big people are dominant and less patient, and will punish me for annoying them. So it's best not to bother them. Since it's hard to hide your height. You could compensate by softening your look. Which is much easier for women to do. Most men have to bite the bullet and lean into the dominance factor, and be the one who always approaches other people. Because no one will approach them. So when you're sitting on your light switch bench and someone walks by...just invite them to come and sit down and talk to you. Or get bossy and order them to sit down. The upside to unapproachability is that isolation may encourage introspection, feed creativity, and help you make more videos.
