Still remember back in 2004, it was 'Yun hi Chalachal' that was the rage...I was in US then and thought the rest of the album was ok but not outstanding(considering the ARR albums we had in his first 10years)...However, the true genius of 'Yeh Jo Des hai' hit me like anything sitting on the Singapore airlines flight in 2005 when I was flying back from SFO...Listening to that track on my CD Man (a lot of youngsters might not have even heard of that 🤣), tears were flowing from my eyes without me even noticing it. This was my first longish stint abroad but I didn't realize such a longing for my country existed within me...It is the testament to the true genius of Rahman that those magical shehnai notes along with his melancholic vocals invoked those hidden feelings that you yourself didn't know existed...That track has since became one of my all time favorite ones (Tamil version is great as well)

Couldnt have expressed it better. Same feeling here. Especially "Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera" brought tears in my eyes too...Deadly combination of Javed Akhtars simple yet heart touching lyrics combined with AR Rahmans ability to articulate that emotion via his music. What more can an Indian expect!

Unfortunately, it didn't quite cut through the masses, I think owing to the film's failure at the BO. Or else, it could have almost received the same standing ovation like Maa Tujhe Salaam or Bharat humko Jaan se pyaara hai songs during occasions like Independence day or Republic Day!

Okay, Swades is the only CD which I have bought which THE ONLY movie CD in my life. And it is intact. till date. The echo of the music so incredibly done representing India and Indian villages is impeccable. And the background score is finest . especially when Mohan's woke up and seeing Indian land from flight window. The movie is very good. One thing about AR RAHMAN unlike other music directors is where NOT to use music instruments or use them minimal as required and where to elevate vocal. I am a Indian classical performing artist- I feel the process in which ARR creates music accepted as pop music actually follows a process of a traditional artist. Its just not Yeh jo des hai tera- if you listen to New York nagaram from JOK- you will definitely feel a certain loneliness akin to how an Indian feels living in US. It evokes a sentiment- and is full of a rasa, the Indian essence of art.

Trust me, Swades when I watched on a repeat mode in 2007, just because of Yeh jo des hai mera.....being a Telugu guy watching a Hindi film repeatedly is not ordinary coz the elements of that movie is such an extraordinary blend of cinematic experience. Most importantly watching SRK as an normal person(not a fan of him, nor seen him at except his KKHH partly, I'm a typical Andra guy ) in character and Kaveri Amma always moves me tears....Director should be credited for Swades. More than Lagaan, I believe that Swades is his best work.
@sumanthnagabushan10633 жыл бұрын
I remember watching Swades at the Empire Leicester Square in London, 1st day 1st show! Powerful movie but even more powerful music… We cried through Yeh Jo des jai Tera. The shehnai and Rahman’s mellow ‘low key’ singing make the song soar to great heights .. I love how ‘Yuhi chalachal’ cleverly transitions from a ‘Counting crows’ guitar riff to a rusty rural heartland melody, spiced with western orchestral grandeur. Saawariya has a strange ‘off-beat’ beat yet portrays her longing so effectively while ‘yeh tara’ s real stars are children. But an unbeatable gem ‘is Ahista ahista’ … a seemingly soothing and ‘quietly sung’ lullaby, but soars high into transcendental planes.. Spectacular music for an inspirationally told tale.. Thank you Mr Gowariker and O2 for this tribute.

Swades is a remake of kannada film chigurida kanasu (2003).story by gnaana peetha awardee winner dr shivaraama karantha..The movie is based on the Kannada novel of same name by Jnanapith awardee Shivaram Karanth. It was released in October 2003 - more than a year before Swades ( Dec 2004). The story is about a resident of Delhi who comes to a small village Bangaadi ( in Karnataka) in search of his roots. Encharmed by the village life , he decides to stay for few more days in the village. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a village girl there who teaches local children. Further , he decides to help the villagers by setting up small hydrolic power generation facility from nearby water source. Ultimately , the protagonist decides to stay in the village and does not wish to return to city life. So , if you observe closely , the story of Swades and Chigurida Kanasu are very similar..!! Chigurida kanasu music director also won state award (V.manohar) for the same..!!

He started with Naadan Parindey and 3 hours of pure magic. The only annoyance was people leaning up to shoot videos. We tried to crash backstage and got thrown out. Walking back dejectedly, we saw his car passing us at a sedate speed. I don't know what came over me and I just jumped at the car. Lol, he looked up kinda startled. Wish I got an autograph. I will break my regular format of writing in paras and put it all I felt in bullet points: 1. Swades a great movie indeed but feels like a documentary to watch if not for out of the world 🌍 Arr's Bgms and his Breath taking melodies 🎶. 2. Like how I missed The waltz of Romance 💒 making in the last episode, this time too 'am not surprised to miss Saawariya song making being missed. 3. Every song of Swades is a gem 💎 but Ye jo Des and Saawariya are my most favourites. Sawariya sung by Alka Yagnik may sound like a regular heroine song but it is not if one listens to the whole song carefully rather than watching it. There's so much soul and a sweet melancholy in this song too despite not being patriotic. 4. Cover versions are great👍, esp. ye jo des atleast being well covered more than makes up for the missing of Sawariya song. After all, one episode is not enough to cover the greatness of albums like स्वदेश or लगान! 5. Ashutosh nailed 📌 it every bit of this interview and I loved the fact that he so well articulated abt Rahman's compositions saying he's strengthened the base by expanding the highs of highs and lows of the low scales in film music. Unique bytes again abt Rahman sir's genius from another unique director. 6. Also loved what Rahman himself said about how he gets very objective in judgement by removing himself out of the music process. I could somewhere personally relate to this as a writer myself when I went into a vaccuum. He's words had made me realise once again how it's easy to get into a rut when monotony catches up in your work. 7. Would be pleased to know which song Uditji had got National award as he sung 3 or 4 in this movie also. But Rahman ideally should have won the award 🏅 for his soulful singing of the title track. ---Above all--- 8. He always nails patriotic 🇮🇳 songs (from the beginning of his career) even when he sings it. He's love to compose these kind of gems 💎shows 🎵 is not just about brains but also needs a golden heart 💖, which Rahman saab has!!

No one currently can create music like Ar.Rahman. Look around can anyone name one musician you can say can continue if there's Rahman is gone? Every other musicians despite of different in skill and talents at the end of the day they all sound alike. Everyon music director in India from south to North have tried to compete with him no one to date has even came close to create anything similar. He has put many of music directors out of business. When Rahman die, music dies with him.

The closest thing to God and his magic = ARR and his music + his voice . Yeh Jo Des evokes more patriotism than all the patriotic songs I’ve ever heard in my lifetime. And yes the song words are out of this world. There cannot be any Indian living abroad and not crying whilst listening to it ❤️🙌

Dear Mr. Iyer. You are so correct. Like you, so many of our viewers have expressed similar thoughts. We understand and share your feelings. In fact not only for Indians living out of India, even those living in India get emotional. Thank you very much for watching "Rahman Music Sheets' Kindly stay with the series and share it further. Help us recah a larger audience base. Warm Regards.

Thank you for bringing us these wonderful interviews. My two cents - please cover scores more and not just the songs. You could easily have a film without songs, but it's extremely hard to make one without a score. Would have loved to discover how ARR uplifted every scene of Swades with his score.

The other beauty of Swades music was, it sounded equally good in Tamil. Tamil lyrics penend by the legend Vaali sir just syncd equally like the Hindi one, usually dubbed movies fail to bring the essence of base language but Swades was an exception!
