The film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long. The plot sees a woman discover that the rental home she reserved has been accidentally double-booked by a man, not knowing of a dark secret within the dwelling. A young woman discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there's a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

So, to the practicality issue- the point of the film to me is that Tess is smart- she even addresses how stupid some of her actions are- but while frank and AJ are selfish and are about self preservation, Tess isn’t a “barbarian”- she cares, to her detriment about Keith and AJ. It is all about how people, women especially, ignore the red flags because they want to be nice/caring.

I loved this reaction!! So funny 😂 I love this movie because it shows you how men and women behave in terrifying situations - Tess is hesitant with Keith, she’s scared of going downstairs, she’s aware of the danger around every corner; Both Keith and AJ readily go downstairs and into the basement, and AJ even gets all the way into the tunnel with the tape measure without thinking that it might be dangerous down there. I feel like it’s a great commentary on how women navigate the world (and potentially dangerous situations) vs how men do. Even at the very end AJ chooses to be selfish and the “monster” shows care and affection towards Tess. It’s brilliant!

It's so cool to find out that the mother character was played a man & covered in female prosthetics to the point they had a fake butt and decided against it. This actor had to be total bare butt in his shots & chemically removed all his body hair but eyebrows & he's 6feet 8 in tall. He did amazing job! The 3 male stars were all picked for specific reasons & sort of like a wink to audiences. For example they knew we all would be scared of Skarsgard & unsure of him cause of It. And w Justin Long, he always plays that nice & sweet like charming guy, but in fact was a rapist. The whole movie is to show how sexism is still currently an issue & relates to our fears.

I'm a man who used to take strolls around town at 2 AM when I was younger. Now I'm older and wiser I'd rather sleep in my car than take my chances in that building with a stranger who got "double booked". Not to mention my doubts there's no other hotel I can check into for one night in the city.

I honestly felt so bad for the Creature. She was a byproduct of r*pe and torture. Plus, serious inbreeding. It wasn't her fault she was a "monster." All she wanted was a baby, and that broke my otherwise cold heart. 😅 And Justin Long's character deserved for worse. The film was amazing. Bill did his job being the reddest green flag ever. Hahaha! And I loved that nothing was ever what we expected. Additionally, I agree with Oak, I screamed at Tess and the screen when she walked into that home at the beginning. I would have slept in my car elsewhere. Another phenomenal reaction, and thank you for remaining one of my comfort channels. 😊

I don't think she was forty, I think she was his grandaughter or even worse great grand daughter because this monster probably wasn't waiting until the girls were legally old enough and given the severity of inbreeding here, this wasn't his daughter. I got a lump in my throat when she jumped off the tower to save Tess and by the time Tess shot her I had really teared up. Although, Tess had to do it though

Some trivia about the film for you guys: -The director Zach Creggar originally wrote the first act as a writing exercise. He based it off “The Gift of Fear”, a book about trusting your natural instincts when getting into potentially dangerous situations. He wanted to write a scene where a woman is presented with many red flags with her interaction with a man. At the end of the scene, Zach thought to himself that by making Keith the actual bad guy, it would be too predictable, so he ended the scene with a lady just running out of the darkness and killing him. -With the cinematography, Zach had two rules: Everything upstairs would be shot like Fincher, everything downstairs would be shot like Raimi. In regards to effects, Zach made a rule that they would use CGI only as much as a John Carpenter had access to for “The Thing”. -Zach shopped his finished script to many production companies before it was picked up by 20 Century Fox. Many either turned him down or asked him to make many changes, but Zach refused to make any changes. The three biggest issues with the script were the unconventional act structure of the story, nobody wants to watch a movie about a Hollywood actor, and nobody wants to follow a serial killer for an entire scene. -Zach is really good friends with horror director and fellow comedian Jordan Peele, and Zach consulted with him during the making of the film. Zach showed the scene where Tess stares into the dark hallway before saying “Nope”. Peele had just released the movie “Nope” earlier the same year. He asked if it was ok to keep that in the film, and Peele said to keep it in. -The part of AJ was originally offered to Zac Efron, as Zach originally envisioned the character as a hot Hollywood Him-bo. Efron turned down the role and it was then offered to Justin Long. Zach ended up liking Justin better because he is so likeable and unassuming, that it makes him a more dangerous kind of predator. -the movies that heavily Influenced Zach in the making of the film were Takashi Miike’s 1999 film, “Audition”, “Psycho”, and Raimi’s “Drag me to Hell”.

It makes sense now that it was written as a standalone initially then the rest was added. Also now that you said everything upstairs is Fincher I can’t unsee it.

This movie had such interesting marketing. One of the trailers was presented as a Rom-Com, and the second was of Justin Long as a Comedy. They even went as far to say the from the creators of Alvin and The Chipmunks ahaha. I also really like how BIll's character was a subversion from the actual horror. he was just a nice guy who came across as awkward and creepy. Great movie and Great Reaction!

To possibly help explain some of the tunnels, the Underground Railroad had a heavy presence in Detroit so some of that could possibly date back to those days. Regarding Tess's decisions, they establish in one of the convos with Keith that she has a history of putting other people ahead of herself to her detriment. Once she knows that someone else is in danger she tries to overcome her fear even if it puts herself at risk. (A lot of generosity needs to still be given to be sure, but they did at least establish that to a point.)

Completely agree. It’s heartbreaking watching Tess kill the mother. She’s so innocent and a byproduct of violence. AJ and Frank are the monsters in this movie. I think this movie is almost a social commentary on women and men just in society. It was really interesting watching four men react to this.

I ADORE this film. It blew me away the first time I watched it - and yes, Oak is right about all the plot holes! For sure! However, for me the brilliance of this film is ALL about the subtext. I take it as a near-mythical cautionary tale heightened to the point of absurdity TO showcase very clearly the point it’s trying to make. Every character subverts expectations in some way, and in this way the casting was brilliant. We have seen Bill act mostly as monsters and creeps, so instantly he comes under suspicion even before circumstances become increasingly awkward. And then (in the final cut), it turns out that he was innocent - a little presumptuous, definitely taking advantage of the rom-com situation, a bit blind to the circumstances, but no monster. Long’s character reveals himself more and more as the film goes on to be a selfish, callous, genuinely awful person under a shiny veneer. A very real kind of monster. And then we have the serial killer under the house - monstrous in the truest sense, deeply evil, cruel and violent and poisonous. MYTHICALLY barbaric to the point of unreality. These three tiers of barbarian outline how impossible it is to determine character based on appearances, and how easily monsters can lurk beneath the surface. It’s a visceral representation of the caution women have to take daily in their interactions - who is a Keith? An AJ? A Frank? You can’t know right off, so you have to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. I consider both Tess and the Creature to be protagonists, in the end. Like you all stated, the creature is a victim - raised in those tunnels, all she has ever known is that nursing video and the fear of her father. Her actions are those of a being who has compassion and desires connection, but has never been socialized or given a moral compass to dictate her actions. Tess - and all her smart and not-so-smart decisions - makes total sense to me. She is obviously smart, makes completely sane choices, has realistic suspicions, but still makes a lot of mistakes too! Her bad decisions as a character all come down to one thing: she keeps going back to/for men who don’t deserve/have not earned her loyalty. It’s a metaphor. She keeps going to find Keith, going back for AJ, declining calls from Marcus but never blocking him. She puts her trust in these people who she really owes nothing to, to her own detriment. She keeps getting hurt, keeps facing these consequences for compassion, until finally she has had enough. Her lesson is that she learns to prioritize her own well-being. She sees the Creature, understands her confusion and love and torment, but shoots her so that she can get away. And she does. (Secure your own mask before you help someone else, girl. Rule one.) Epic final girl, really. I freaking loved this film. I don’t take it as something literal - It’s a huge extended metaphor, so the plot holes don’t bother me. Realism isn’t the point - the lesson is the point. :) Thanks for watching this one, fellas!

As a pessimistic human being living in 2023, I agreed with Oak's irritation with the female lead's carelessness and entering the house, but I also was irritated with Skarsgard's character for inviting her in. He doesn't know her and she could've been a killer for all he knew but alas

I personally tend to excuse plot holes to a degree in the horror genre. I mean, almost all of those movies are kinda stupid. There are very, very few who are sane, its like they almost depend on being stupid. They even adress that in Barbarian in the scene where Tess stays in front of the dark hallway and says "nope". But what else could you do as a filmmaker in this scenario? There is just no way any of the horror would have happened if they acted like real people would do. I think thats why barbarian is still a good movie. We all just have to accept the stupidity to be invested in this genre

To be even more fair to this film, I don't think those are plot holes. It's just Tess' characterization and the themes of the film. It's kinda fully laid out in her conversation with Keith in the beginning. They brought up the book which was Jane Eyre. A book about a woman who is desperate for love and being valued, self-discovery and gendered. All of which kind of tie in to Tess as a character.

The misdirect of Keith's character I think is what really made this film work. Once he unpredictably got killed and shown not the bad guy all along we are on edge with the rest of the film not knowing what other things this movie is gonna pull out from under the rug on us.

That keith scene, diamond dave and oak's souls left their body for a moment, meanwhile, answer doesn't even flinch lol i love it 😄 You first start out being scared of the 'monster' but the longer the movie went on, i actually kinda started feeling sorry for her and the real 'monster' was in fact the guy who started all this. She probably doesnt understand this world and just wants to be a mother, especially with that video tape her only source of outside media. No one wants to be born into that or live like that but that sick guy kept doing what he was doing. No wonder she was somewhat scared and backed away from the door when AJ was in front of it and went in to see him. To her, he was the monster to be scared of. I also wonder if that guy killed himself purely cause he didnt want to get caught since someone (AJ) finally found him or if there was any other meaning we could get out of that scene. One thing you didn't touch on, which is fine, is the deeper meaning and commentary about this movie. Lots of layers when you dig deeper beyond just a "fun" movie for those who want to do that or just enjoy the movie as it is, which still works. but like how men are evil and get away with doing stuff, treatment of women, the motherhood elements especially revolving around the "monster" etc etc. can go further but it really is an interesting movie and i'm glad you guys checked it out.

They cut out a scene from the movie that they felt went too far, especially since they already had the breastfeeding scene; and the director thought Justin Long wouldn't do it, but he was giddy to actually have it done. The scene, which they did film, involved The Mother chewing up a rat and reguritating it (bird-style) to feed Justin Long's character. They decided it wasn't needed though; again, the breastfeeding scene was set up so well and disturbing enough that it already left a good bad taste in your mouth.

Jane Eyre is a book about the titular character discovering the man she’s in love with has someone captive in the catacombs of his castle so it’s a reference to what’s happening in this movie.

This movie is great at parallels. In particular, the scene where A.J. is being forced to breastfeed against his will is a bit of karma for he how forced his co-star against her will. Also, the casting was brilliant. Bill Skarsgard is known for playing devious characters, while Justin Long plays good characters. Pitting them against their type adds another layer of suspicion and suspense.

My daughter and I love this movie.. Woman (Tess) is nervous and scared of guy #1...good guy Keith. Why? Situation and see guys 2...rapist making excuses about it not being rape...and guy 3...worse rapist, probably serial killer. And woman (Tess) warning Keith, Justin Long, and the cops about danger and all the men ignoring her....not seeing the danger that she constantly has to be aware of.. And woman (Tess) trying to help the men even though they ignored her concerns. Also..did anyone notice the newspaper article (I think it was in the airport) that stated/implied Justin Long's dad was a serial rapist? Who is the real Barbarian in the film? Did enjoy your reactions!

I was recently hospitalized in Detroit, having been transferred from a smaller hospital in a semi-nearby town, and on the drive home I couldn't help but be sad at some of the surroundings. Detroit has some of the most *gorgeous* architecture you can imagine on homes in terrible, dilapidated neighborhoods. Such a sad contrast!

This was the best movie to go into blind. The only thing I knew about it was the one-line description on the streaming service and I’m so glad I didn’t know anything. When it jumped to Justin Long I had the same “did I change the channel by mistake?” reaction. I can appreciate what the Oak had to say about plot holes, but at the same time I think you need to consider that they were highlighting how people can act in spite of so many red flags. I think with time, people have become better about standing up for themselves and being wary of dangerous situations, but I also think it’s still WAY too common that women are taught to be accommodating and polite, and this is what happens. It was quick at the beginning, but the fact that Tess kept ignoring calls from Marcus but never blocking him maybe hints that she’s uncomfortable really putting her foot down and drawing that line with him. She was clearly not ok with any of her situation but was too polite to just say “nope I’m out of here, bye” and get back in her car. Bill played Keith absolutely perfectly. I did the same kind of second guessing - is this guy trying way too hard to play the nice guy, or is the movie setting me up to think the wrong thing? When they were putting the sheets on the bed, I was SO sure he was going to use that sheet to grab and detain her. Another great movie that subverts expectations that I’d love to see you guys check out is Malignant.

One of the coolest things of this movie is subverting the audience’s automatic expectations just based on the cast. Casting Bill Skarsgard, known for being Pennywise, had most of us immediately suspicious of his character, especially given the circumstances. And then casting Justin Long, known for playing lovable characters, as such an asshole was surprising as well. As you watch the movie, you’re kind of unlearning your natural instinct to trust him. And on top of that, for Tess to make every single wrong decision you could make in a horror movie 😂 I’m glad y’all liked the movie overall. Oak, I would encourage you to be more open & practice some suspension of disbelief in these stories. Sometimes things are outrageously unrealistic, but that’s just the world the story is in

The Jeep Liberty/Cherokee thing is because the film was actually shot in Europe where the Liberty is called a Cherokee. Only a few shots were in Detroit

I have been watching horror movies for nearly 30 years now since I snuck into the living room when I was 5 and watched Candyman (which was a huge traumatizing mistake. Still the scariest movie I've ever seen). I am extremely good at suspending my disbelief in horror movies, and it takes something egregiously stupid to genuinely annoy me with regards to protagonist actions. But Tess going down to the creepy murder basement not once but twice for men she barely new drove me absolutely crazy. What are you going to do, Tess? You didn't grab a weapon. And best case scenario is something was keeping Keith from returning, worst case he was a murderer trying to lure you into his lair. How were you going to counter that? And why in Wes Carpenter's name would you go after the second guy you knew even less than the first guy!? Absolutely maddening. The only reason I was rooting for her in the end is I didn't want Weinstein Jr. being the sole survivor.

Unfortunately, no. And it goes beyond that, Horror as a genre is often completely overlooked by the Oscars, purposely, because it's seen a lesser form of film. If you look up the history, you'll find barely any nominations and only a small handful of wins in the entire history. Actors/actresses are often overlooked and never nominated in the first place despite giving mindblowing performances, see Mia Goth in Pearl, Toni Collette in Hereditary, Lupita Nyong’o in US , Florence Pugh in Midsommar, Elisabeth Moss in The Invisible Man, the list goes on and on and on. It's a massive point of contention against the Oscars in the horror community.

They also don’t have a Category for comedy. Their nominations are normally Drama, Action, Family, or Animated Films. Rarely and I mean rarely they will nominate a Drama/Thriller like “The Silence of The Lambs” and it will sweep. The film is still listed as a Drama though, which truly sucks because a lot of my favorite horror films would never be able to pass as dramas.

I don't think practicality is a bad thing. It's incredibly easy to write any story if you just don't worry about the details of how things add up, but going the extra mile to think things out and make it connect and work within the rules of the world its taking place in elevates any story. For horror it also adds to the fear if the story has as few leaps and holes as possible as it makes it feel more real.

What i will say regarding the end, ive used airbnb a few times and unfortunately they dont do legit checks, ive turned up and it is just straight up not the house at all, u can lie on the forms and just take pics of the house, not even surroundings so thats just one thing to take into consideration 😄 But i agree tho Oak! Theres a few holes and ofc isnt the most realistic thing but as u said, its a movie. The directors and producers were defo going for the tense scary vibe more
