Oakland, Calif.-March 29, 2024-The Port of Oakland will consider modifying the airport's name to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport from its current official name, the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK). The airport code OAK and visual brand will not change.
“Oakland helped put us on the map in California and we’re wholeheartedly supportive of this rebranding that acknowledges OAK’s economic position and influence in the San Francisco Bay area while staying true to its Oakland roots,” said Jennifer Bridie, Vice President of Marketing Communications & Strategy at Southwest Airlines.
OAK consistently hears from local travelers about their desire for more direct flights to domestic and global destinations. To make this happen, travelers who live outside the region need to learn that OAK is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and close to the region’s top destinations.

I honestly believe the airport name change has a lot to do with Oakland's bad reputation as well as San Francisco's name being more marketable since people not native to the region automatically think of San Francisco when they think of of the Bay Area. I was born and raised in Berkeley and my attitude has always been that there is a clear distinction between the East Bay and San Francisco, but I digress. Like the Angels who play in Anaheim aren't in Los Angeles, the same is true for the 49ers who play in Santa Clara aren't in San Francisco for the same reason mentioned above (familiarity and marketability)

Born in Oakland, grew up in Pleasant Hill, worked in Hayward at Mervyns corporate office. Now an old man in Miami Beach. As a kid I took great pride walking thru the Terminal at OAK and seeing large murals of the A’s, Seals, Raiders, and Warriors. Seems a shame.

Speaking as a New Jerseyan who has never been to California, my first thought was Bay Area Int'l Airport - if I had to be in SF tomorrow there's a good chance I'd search "flights to bay area" and it would probably work. Poor Oakland.

As a regular business traveler, I can tell you my colleagues barely know Oakland exists. They fly into SFO and SJC the vast majority of the time. I can see this making sense from a branding perspective because it'll show up in the SF searches more easily. Oakland is a well kept secret right now given BART access and an easy way into the city. It's better than SJC already if you're going to SF. I know it hurts to realize that Oakland is not a brand name. Frankly it's something that residents need to get over. I don't sit around moaning San Jose gets no respect, because it doesn't really deserve that much.

This is the same thinking that led Oakland City College to change it's name to Merritt College. As Brodie said, San Jose doesn't have this issue. We're completely loosing our identity. From an outsiders perspective - I live in Montreal - and until I travelled to the Bay area for work... I honestly thought Oakland was _very_ far away. this is despite my watching the 1989 WS live and the tragic earthquake during that series, ie, I _should_ have known better, not like _right_ there in the Bay area. I chose a flight to SFO because of this. So I understand why the decision makes sense from a business perspective, but I understand this is salt in the wound of Oakland's pride right now.

on southwest airlines for example, type in "san francisco" as a destination... it will not only give you SFO, but "san francisco AREA" airports (SFO, SJC, OAK) all as options. the airlines can suggest this... not rely on the airport to change its name.

I think the Port of Oakland correctly identified an issue. A lot of the grousing are from locals that know the geography. Frankly, I forget about OAK when looking for options. I live relatively close to SJC so I look there first, but I generally consider only SFO as an alternative.

I started watching you because of the A's fiasco, and now getting to see you branch into reporting about other relocations and other topics related to Oakland really showcases your skill as a reporter. It's great to see you & your channel growing! As an Oakland native with deep roots in the East Bay, I share your concerns regarding cheapening Oakland as an asset. But before I get into that, I want to share some counterpoints: 1) I do agree with the spirit of this name change. Regardless of any attempts of airline websites describing airports in the Bay Area, not many people realize how close Oakland is to SF. And as you pointed out, for people going to SF, many people don't realize that OAK is often a BETTER option than SFO to SF in terms of proximity. I like to joke that I can often get to the SF financial district from where I live in Oakland than my friends who live in the Richmond District in SF! Locals might know Oakland's vicinity to SF, but international airports have international clientele, and thus many will immediately assume that based on the name, SFO is closer to SF than OAK is, and often times that is not the case. 2) As much as I love Oakland, it will always play second fiddle to SF. Always. SF is older, has a longer history, is more wealthy, and is frankly just a more mature city than Oakland. Just ask San Jose how hard it is to compete with SF. San Jose is larger in both land mass & population than SF, and arguably wealthier than SF, but has it supplanted SF as the most prominent city in the Bay Area? Hardly. I say this to point out that more travellers will want to go to SF than Oakland. That's not a slight to Oakland: that's just a fact. Thus, failing to properly advertise Oakland Airport's connection to the preeminent city in the Bay Area is just bad business. 3) Having also lived in LA for 20 years, I'd argue calling the Angels "Los Angeles" is a FAR more egregious cultural co-opting than OAK integrating SF in its name. Whereas in bad Bay Bridge traffic it might take you 45-60 minutes to drive from Oakland to SF, Anaheim is 45-60 minutes to DTLA ON AVERAGE. Anaheim is a suburb in Orange County, and has a distinctively different culture than urban LA. Now while SF & Oakland certainly has its differences, I'd argue that the urban culture in both SF & Oakland creates a closer bond between those cities than you will ever see between LA & Anaheim. 2A) You wondered why San Jose doesn't have a branding problem? Because San Jose is built like a suburb. And it's 50 miles away from SF, much farther than the 12 miles that separates DT Oakland from DTSF. San Jose is SF's Anaheim (which makes the 49ers keeping SF in its name while moving to Santa Clara all the more telling, and all the more ironic). With all that said, OAKLAND SHOULD COME FIRST. I agree with you that if Oakland's airport begins with "San Francisco", it will minimize Oakland's identity. I rock climb, so I thought it was really cool when popular Norwegian rock climbing KZbinr Magnus Midtbø visited Pacific Pipe in Oakland, one of the largest climbing gyms in the entire US. Yet he repeatedly said the gym was in San Francisco (to the ire of many Oaklanders in his comment section). It just never occurred to him that Oakland is its own place distinct from SF, and that's a shame. As much as I want people to know how close Oakland is to SF, it means nothing if Oakland gets erased in the process. As a previous commenter mentioned, just call it the Oakland-San Francisco Bay International Airport. Let people know that Oakland is much closer to SF than people realize, while still keeping OAKLAND FIRST!

(Peter from Australia) - Brodie, we've got a similar thing here in Melbourne. Melbourne Airport (in Tullamarine) since about 1970 was the main airport in Melbourne, with other smaller airports (Essendon and Moorabbin) named after their respective suburbs and mostly just taking charter flights. Then about a decade or so ago, they turned another airport, Avalon Airport, from just cargo only into another domestic (and limited international) flights airport. They renamed it Melbourne Avalon Airport, even though the city of Geelong is far closer to it than Melbourne (a 20 odd minute drive compared to almost an hour's drive). That said, by being a "Melbourne" Airport, it comes up a lot in flight searches - especially if you're flying a budget carrier like Jetstar, where you need to double check if you're flying into "Avalon" or "Tullamarine" when it presents the Melbourne options.

@brodiebrazil they're doing the same thing up here in WA. A new, much smaller airport in Everett (North of Seattle) is being renamed "Seattle Paine Field" (PAE) for better awareness. Not to be confused with Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

They recently made a name change to Paine Field in Everett WA just outside of Seattle to Seattle Paine Field. I had a flight that was canceled, and the flight they rebooked me on was to Seattle Paine Field. The only issue is that it's about 40 miles away. Changing the name of the OAK airport will open up the door to airlines being able to rebook flights because "San Francisco" will now be on the name of both.

I will first admit that I am not an average person because I know there are multiple airports in the San Francisco area including Oakland which has easy access to the city via public transportation. However the name of the airport isn't as big an issue as the reputation of the city of Oakland. Of course, the city of San Francisco is getting a pretty bad reputation these days as well.

Tokyo Haneda and Narita airport are very similar to both our airports that use Tokyo, but one is in Tokyo (haneda) the other is nowhere near Tokyo (narita). It works for them. They could name it San Francisco East Bay airport. Because the Oakland airport serves not only Oakland but the entire east Bay.

IF they are convinced the reason past routes have not been successful is that people are too confused about where Oakland is, do they have commitments from United, American and other carriers to restart service to OAK if they change the name? Or are they just hoping? If they really want to add SF to the name, perhaps consider what Baltimore did to pick up more of the DC travelers--Baltimore/Washington International BWI. Oakland/SF Bay Area International sounds less clunky and keeps Oakland's name first.

I throw my hands up with these conversations. Did people not learn geography in school or how to do a flight search for "San Francisco Area"? Why can't people be held accountable for their knowledge (or lack thereof)? There are quite a few airports in the Los Angeles AREA that aren't LAX. Great. I can see what is being offered for flights and prices if I choose AREA and then do my due diligence to see how far Ontario or John Wayne airports are from Dodger Stadium compared to LAX. This name change is utterly ridiculous, WAY too long, and we're just backed into yet another corner of spoon-feeding human beings because adults can't adult. Life in 2024 is dumb.

I don't have an issue with it. Washington DC has three airports with their name in it. Two are in VA and the other in MD. None actually in DC. Not a big deal to me if they want to change the name. Sounds like a smart business move to me. Hopefully this helps create more international travel. Norwegian wasn't great, but it was cheap. Flying older 777's to Gatwick from Oakland on British Airways was cheaper than anything SFO offered. Norwegian is defunct and BA left but whatever helps bring back international travel is good IMO.

This situation reminds me so much of Ontario International Airport here in So-Cal, back when LA World Airports owned it, calling it LA/Ontario Int'l, for a familiar location name. This is the airport closest to me and more preferred compared to LAX. But there was confusion and grief over the name "LA/Ontario" when Ontario, CA is 50 miles east of LA with the reasoning being "We don't want to confuse this airport with Ontario, Canada". Then when they did the name change, LAWA refused to improve Ontario Airport until the City of Ontario claimed the airport back.

For people from outside Ontario California. When they hear Ontario they think of the namesake the originator of this name. They don't think about the town named Ontario in the southwest of the north american continent. Can you imagine buying a ticket to visit the hockey Hall of Fame only to end up in the opposing side of the continent. Sounds like a home alone sequel. Also naming a minor-pro team the Ontario Reign is super confusing especially considering real Ontario is such a hockey hotbed. Why not use a more well known designation of Inland Empire Reigns ?

@@the_king__of_the_world Regarding the Ontario Reign, it does makes sense (while the other minor league team in Ontario is called Agua Caliente Clippers based from the local casino sponsor). Differencing Ontario California and Ontario Canada is needed at the airports. But as Brodie stated, just gotta double check and make sure you are going to the right location. Plus I think airport gates for flights to Canada would say "Toronto" or "Ottawa" (honestly don't know the airports in Canada too well, but not too many airports would have the state/province name) or have Ontario as "Ontario, Calif." rather just Ontario alone.

If you got look at statistics. Air travel is 100% tied to the economy. The air travel dipped in 2007 and in 2020 due to economic crash and covid crash. Changing the name makes no difference in real numbers if businesses are failing not making money or closing up shops. Same thing at SFO. They are still suffering and have not made back their 28mil per year in passengers since 2019. Economist have said we wont get back to 2019 numbers until 2026 at least. If inflation gets worse everywhere it will be even longer. We live in a boom bust cycle centrally planned economy. This is what happens. A marketing gimmick will not change the fundamental facts of the problems we are having.

One big issue is that the names are too similar. San Francisco International and San Francisco Bay Oakland International are very similar. I think a good solution would be to name the airports SF-Peninsula, SF-Oakland, SF-Silicon, SF-Sonoma, and SF-Sacramento. That way people would call them by their location.

If they're looking to get more business into the airport (ie. revenue for the port which, let's face it, is what this is REALLY about), then why not just call it Greater Bay Area International Airport? The three letter code, which technically is 4 (KOAK), doesn't mean jack to anyone really 'cept us pilots--for instance, people have no problem going to New Orleans and it's code is KMSY. Unless you know the history of the region, you would have no idea why it is named that way. I mean, if they're already willing to dilute the Oakland branding by placing San Francisco far ahead of it, then go all out. To me, the "greater" part kind of makes OAK seem like a bigger, more accessible option for people going to the Bay Area than SFO. Gotta love bored bureaucrats. My .02.

Oakland is a Southwest fortress hub. No major airline wants to compete there knowing Southwest will just undercut them on price. And without competition, you’re not going to get more flights. This sounds like a Southwest push who are worried that out-of-town fliers won’t book their SF trip there. But let’s be honest, OAK may be convenient for SF city, it is the worst airline to serve the high tech companies located on the West Bay and Silicon Valley.

I actually found this video very interesting. I feel this move to rename the airport is related to the A's relocation. The city of Oakland seems to be losing some of its identity as a city onto itself and is slowly becoming a satellite of San Francisco. Is Oakland becoming the Anaheim of northern California?

I didnt know Oakland had an airport when I traveled there for Raiders game and felt stupid when I found out after flying in to SF 😅
