Hey Brodie, just want to say thanks for putting these videos out. I had been searching for info on the possible relocation and found your videos. Now I feel that I am completely in the know about what is going on. Like you I want the A’s to stay. Been an A’s fan my whole life. I was born in ‘72. Having been a fan all these years I’m used to disappointment. So many good years and some bad losses. The first time I heard they were going to Vegas It felt like a gut punch but the way the team has been treating its fans lately we’re used to getting punched in the gut. Unfortunately if the team does move I’ll be done with the A’s and probably MLB altogether. I can’t have loyalty to a disloyal team. I know Oakland shares the blame but obviously this could be done. If the team didn’t sell off every year we would be a constant contender because our scouts and farm system is always good. We’d Also have 20-25,000 fans on average. I’d like to pay my respects to each and every player and coach that has made this a magical organization over the years. I’m still holding on to hope that they can stay and I would forgive all if they did.

If Oakland invest in the infrastructure surrounding Howard Terminal, the I-880 Oakland-Alameda Access Project (OAAP), and planned development at the West Oakland BART station are completed, I think there is a good chance that someday some form of sports facility will be constructed around Howard Terminal. Oakland does have a very good track record spurring development and bringing in investers. While the A's fiasco was unfolding, Oakland successfully fulfilled large scale development plans such as the Broadway Valdez District Specific Plan and Brooklyn Basin project, both very large projects. Oakland, San Diego and LA added the most housing in California and Oakland is much smaller than the other two. Also, Oakland managed to pave 121.2 miles of streets between June 2019 and June 2022, roughly meeting the 125-mile goal outlined in the city's three-year paving plan and completed the Lake Merritt improvement plan. Oakland does get things done.

The mayor is speaking my language. A's should not be welcomed back if they continue to go along with Las Vegas. If the new Jack London Waterfront ballpark is planned to be built anyway, then hopefully Oakland can get a baseball team that would actually be considered "Rooted in Oakland", and hopefully a team that knows how to win games, and at least have winning seasons. I'm not saying be like the Golden State Warriors (even though that would be great), but to at least put in enough effort to win a game.

The A’s relocation is based upon a premise that the $500M MLB relocation fee would be waived. Recent reports characterize this waiver as doubtful, which is obvious to me. Since 75% of MLB ownership has to approve the relocation, why would the 29 other owners vote to give up the $500M relocation fee ($17.2 per team) and give up a potential expansion market and its $2B expansion fee and receive nothing in return.? Also, waiving the $500M expansion fee sets a bad precedent in being able to collect a relocation fee for any future team(s) seeking to relocate. Waiving this fee for Oakland effectively waives it permanently for any other owner seeking to relocate, as it would be unjustified to waive the fee for Oakland and not future relocations. Even if SB 509 is passed by the Nevada legislature, the A’s ownership will still have to convince at least 23 other MLB owners to waive $17.2M of their share of a $500M relocation fee and let the A’s take up an expansion market for free in order to get MLB approval to relocate. Call me skeptical, but I don’t see that happening. We know that A’s ownership doesn’t have the financial capacity to pay that $500M fee. So, passage of SB 509 doesn’t ensure the A’s will relocate to Las Vegas at all. Anyone who thinks I’m wrong, please explain why you would give up $17.2M in relocation fee revenue and let the A’s take an expansion market for free if you were one of the 29 other owners!?!?!?! For the record, I’m not an A’s fan and have never lived in Northern or Central California. I’m a baseball fan and following this story as such.

Don’t forget due to revenue sharing most of this owners are paying the A’s to tank games. With the relocation fee they can recoup some of their money given to the A’s over the years. I also have a hard time believing that the Dodgers, Padres,Diamondbacks, and, Angels are going to let the A’s just take a piece of their pie for free. The A’s organization and Manfred are a total embarrassment to baseball. Name 1 big name player the A’s have signed to a multi-year deal in the last 30 years?

If Oakland and the A's were truly as close to a final deal as many are claiming they supposedly were, Oakland/Alameda County/the Port should go ahead and give final approval to the A's last negotiating offer. That would basically throw all of the onus on the A's to outright admit if they would rather stay in Oakland or move to Las Vegas. That is the quickest, most efficient way to get a final resolution. That would be a Hail Mary move to prove Oakland is serious. If all final approval is given and the A's still decide to move to Las Vegas, that is a clear indication that the A's no longer want to be in Oakland and would end all discussion about what possibly could or could not have been.

Brodie, thank you so much for your excellent work on covering this complex issue.I've tried to gather financial data to compare the Howard Terminal deal to the proposed SB509. Let me add that neither you nor I are ballpark financing experts. I am however involved in Economic Development. The two deals are structured very differently. If you were to try to compare them side-by-side, while they both involve hundreds of millions of dollars, the Oakland deal is radically different from the now tabled Las Vegas deal. In California, all the public money was ancillary to the construction of the stadium and surrounding development. In other words, the pledge to help fund the Howard Terminal development, was limited to infrastructure and transportation. In contrast, it appears the Nevada deal allowed tax credits and absorbing collected tax at the stadium site to directly benefit the development and construction of the stadium itself. In fact the ancillary money was coming from Gaming & Leisure Properties. The direct involvement of financial contributions in Nevada is typified by the fact that the Stadium Authority would own the land under the new stadium. Nothing similar was ever discussed at Howard Terminal. Consider alone the impact on real estate taxes for the baseball team to own the stadium and the neighborhood around Howard Terminal versus the Stadium Authority owning the stadium and land in Las Vegas. California never offered anything close to what was proposed in Nevada. The generous numbers thrown around in Oakland were extremely limited in their potential benefit to the team owners and the development. If you get a stadium financing expert to examine both deals it will become clear why Nevada was much more beneficial to the ball club. If that deal even survives the end of the legislative session. In order to resurrect the Oakland deal the use of public money and tax exemption to specifically build the ballpark facility must be considered.

The big question; what exactly is needed to finalize the Howard Terminal Deal. Also the mayor is going to have to try to call the A's because the A's sure in the heck aren't going to call them. Looks like the Port Authority negotiations have to restart with the A's as well. The 8200 page document seems to be more PR to not take any blame when it took them 2 years after agreeing to the Howard Terminal site to even start talking to the A's.

And given that the CC will be beefed up to Caltrain levels in the not-so-distant future, this will become one of the best transit-served sites in the Bay Area. It definitely has a lot of potential, theoretically. But it needs a massive amount of development to become a viable urban ballpark. We basically need to build a second Mission Bay, but about 3x larger. It has to become a second downtown to make a ballpark there viable. And we live in the era of NIMBYism, when the "protection" of parking and shadows trump everything, including letting people have a place to live. The only site that will work is the current location of the Alameda-Oakland Coliseum. Build new stadium in parking lot and knock down the Coliseum and the Arena next door. It will take way too long to build though. The A’s need to find a temporary home for when the lease runs out. They will have to share a stadium with another Baseball team or maybe a combination of other stadiums. Maybe rotate home games? 1/3 @ Dodger Stadium, 1/3 @ Chase Field in Phoenix, 1/3 @ Petco Park in San Diego, or anyplace else? Could reduce the burden in those cities on game days. IMO the City, A's, and MLB all share equal blame in this, and there has been an astounding lack of leadership from any party. The new mayor seems to view HT as a low priority and no one else in government seems to have taken "point position" so to speak. At first I thought the A's had done their part in offering to privately finance the ballpark but as I've seen more evidence I see that they've actually been just as negligent as the City and at times unreasonable in their demands. If there were some central coordinating actor like say, Major League Baseball acting as an intermediary between the City and the A's then I think that the parties might have been able to come together, but Commissioner Manfred doesn't even show a full understanding of what's going on, let alone any willingness to intervene in the situation. I like Brodie's analogy of ships crossing in the night and just not being able to meet one another at a single point, but I feel that if SOMEONE would just stand up, take the reigns, and say that "the buck stops here," there might still be hope for coming to a binding comprehensive agreement and getting this done.

MLB does not want the drama in dealing with Oakland, California. The SB 509 vote in Nevada will fail to move the team to Las Vegas. If I am wrong and SB509 passes, MLB will step in the way saying the proposed 30, 000 seat stadium is too small for MLB. Las Vegas will eventually be out of the picture and MLB does not want to deal with the City of Oakland for dragging their feet for too long. San Jose was the other logical choice, but the nearby San Francisco Giants had alot to say in opposition. The A's will land at a far away state by MLB is where this will eventually go. This drama in professional sports has been a clusterf$$$ of problems from the beginning.

A’s owners should never be trusted to tell the truth, do the right thing, or especially provide an honest, realistic rendering of a stadium at tropicana! if anyone thinks that “rendering” will actually look the the final product they’re crazy!

Maybe two extremes between Oakland and Las Vegas. At least Oakland did their due diligence and let the locals have a voice. Las Vegas seems to be acting desperately and just rushing the deal through without clear facts, data and giving their locals a voice. Oakland didn't want to screw over it's own residents. Las Vegas wants to be considered a pro sports city like bigger markets and maybe aren't as experienced dealing with pro sports teams. I think it will all work out in the end for both cities.

@@everettkincaid3388 I hear you but from the perspective of a conservative, Oakland screwed over their residents in so many ways. But in this regard, the A's in Vegas only seems rushed because the news came on the tail end of the Nevada Lege session. Whenever the full story is told we will see this didn't happen overnight. I speak as a former Project Manager with teams who have had to go through relocation threats or seeking.

Brodie: Grant money is taxpayers’ money. Please stop confusing the audience. Explain why somebody’s, let’s say federal tax dollars from Iowa, should go toward infrastructure improvements in Oakland to save the A’s?

These dollars were earmarked specifically for transportation infrastructure projects and get to be used by Oakland ballpark or not. Nice try.

@@brodiebrazil Again, grant money is taxpayers’ money. Please qualify that, instead of suggesting it is some gift from a benefactor. What you are saying then is there is a time table for the infrastructure improvements not predicated on a ballpark being built, so why are you making it a key component of the ballpark conversation? In other words, why tie it to the ballpark, which you are trying to do. The city surely has a timetable to get the infrastructure projects underway without waiting on the ballpark outcome, correct? Otherwise it is tied to the ballpark. Please clarify.

@@brodiebrazil Brodie, I have tremendous respect for all of your channels but sadly, your loyalty and rooting to keep the A’s in Oakland is impacting dispassionate discourse on this story. Choosing to constantly play up the negative of the Las Vegas side of the story, while repeatedly building up the Oakland positives, sounds more like shilling than analysis. So be it. Unfortunately, we now live in a time, where debate comes off as trolling, if the comments interfere with the host’s viewpoint. . Better to hurl names, rather than have a healthy discussion, I guess. Welcome to today’s media culture, of which, apparently you are a part. As someone who has followed these issues and covered stories such as these for years (I hosted a radio talk show in Hartford for 20 years and encouraged debate from my audience.) I thought I raised some legitimate points, worthy of discussion. You view it as trolling. It’s your channel. We still have free speech, although apparently not here. Have fun telling your audience, whatever you want them to hear. I do not “troll,” and will no longer comment on your channels. In due course this Oakland issue will be decided, regardless of how you choose to define it to your audience.

@Dan Lovallo California contributes OVERWHELMINGLY more to the federal government than Iowa. In fact California essentially pays for many of the miserable “taker” states down south and through out the Midwest thanks to its robust economy. A federal transportation grant going to transportation in California is not the error you think it is.
