All my Straight and Flak Jacket lenses peeled off and I had to replace them with aftermarket lenses. Finally it was the turn of the Fast Jacket's Transition lenses and I was quite heartbroken because it's very difficult to find such lenses. Not sure even Oakley is making them anymore. While researching what can be done, came across this video and trying it out. I can't believe I didn't think this was possible. My sincere thanks and now I have a fair shot at getting the coating that's peeling off and continue using the lens. You're just clever!

I have owned multiple pairs of Oakley sunglasses and this happened to several pairs. One pair was a spare I bought on sale as a back up and NEVER wore. I can't believe that a company would produce such a crappy product. I wonder if they have fixed this problem. I am concerned about ever buying Oakley again. Ridiculous!

Bro you're a legend! I had some gold halbrooks now there smoked! I pop the lenses out first..🤙😎 I used a little denatured alcohol to get rid of any adhesive. Worked it with my fingers. Came out Flawless!

My lenses always start to kind of bubble up, close to the nose piece. I use these for golfing and think it’s from the sweat. The bubbles spread out. I ditched my last pair and replaced them. New lenses just starting doing the same thing. Just tried it using scotch tape and it took the bubbles away. I could see it starting again. Invaluable tip. Thank YOU!

The sunglasses probably still block UV rays. egular plastic eyeglass lenses block most UV light, but adding a UV-blocking dye boosts UV protection to 100 percent for added safety. Other eyeglass lens materials, including polycarbonate and most high-index plastics, have 100 percent UV protection built-in, so an extra lens treatment is not required for these lenses. Photochromic lenses also block 100 percent of the sun's UV rays without the need for an added UV lens treatment. Edit. Could be that is was an anti reflection coating. For example If the sun is behind you and it hits the inside of the lens then the coating prevents it from reflecting into your eyes. .

I heard here in Brazil that this layer is a anti scrath layer that is damaged by sweat and heat. It makes sense beacuse it happened only on glasses I wear on the beach.

It works for non metalized/polarized/mirrorized lenses. But if you do it on them, you will also peel off that coating. It happened to mine but I don't mind it since the alternative is purchasing expensive replacement.

UV protection is gone once you remove some of the lens tint. I sold all my Oakley tired of fixing this problems. It usually delaminate after 2 years upon production date. Oakley is clever so they will earn more for the replacement lens. Try Rudy Project and Maui Jim is last longer, mine is 5 years still no lens delamination, use it for cycling and everyday use.

Just be careful doing this if it's on the iridium side- I just cleaned up several peeling pairs today from the early 2010s, then tried doing the 23k coating on the Oakley Dispatch Shawn White frame (after doing the Bruce Irons frame)- the coating came right off. Thankfully there are plenty of re-pros available of that 23k lens, and it's not a special lens with a one-off etching. These glasses were probably worn only 10-15 times tops btw, and they peeled on both sides. None of my x-metals experienced this issue.

Once its peeling a mate from work said I can take my Oakley's to get a new peel put once the old one is removed. Will check local shops to see what they can do.

The official website states that they are made of plutonite polycarbonate which blocks 100% UVA, UVB and UVC rays. The coating on the surface of the lens is most likely oleophobic

It usually delaminate after 2 years upon production date. The best way to do not buy oakley. Marketing scheme so you will be buying oakley lens replacement. Try Rudy Project or Maui Jim.

Yea also the great thing with oaks is you can buy just a new lenses if you want to u ain’t gatta get a whole new glass cause every part of oaks can come apart it all just snaps together so u can replace a lense or an arm whatever u need and your not having to spend 200$ again for the whole new glass at least ya got that going for ya Oakley

My theory is that this coating serves no purpose and Oakley started putting it on their lenses so that they only last a few years. This way people are forced to either buy replacement lenses or new sunglasses every couple of years. I have three pairs of Oakleys that I bought in the early 2000s and none of them are showing any signs of this.

All of my oakleys did peel. Some say my sweat is too acidic, but none of my rudy projects had this problem. I even keep those Rudy's with sweat in it.

I enjoyed the video, but honest question, if your glasses are peeling, and you take off the what i would think of as the protective coating(UV??) wouldn't it be safer for your eye health, to purchase a new pair of sunglasses?

You are correct about the protective coating being removed and it would be safer for a new pair. I know that some people may not have the money to buy a 150.00 replacement. This is just an Option to still be able to use the same pair. Personally I have switched brands that are better quality and do not peel after a year or two. Thank you so much for your comment! The better option is to buy $20 sunglasses and replace them once a year or so and you can have several pairs and not worry about them. High end sunglasses are only marginally better quality. They basically would maybe be $30 if they were priced correctly. You are paying for the marketing of their brand name more then anything else.

That's true for the most part. The X factor being prescription. I used to love being able to wear throw away shades, but my vision is trash these days. Everything from seeing my dashboard clearly while driving to tying fishing line requires glasses. I'll have to see if contact lenses are a viable option for daily use. I'd love to go back to reasonably priced sunglasses.

Its not a repair. He is just removing the AR coating on the front and back of the lenses.. Oakley is Garbage. Just threw out a pair hardly ever wore them..

Big question is what is that layer being removed? If it’s anything to do with UV coating, you are all asking for trouble coz pupils dialate behind dark lenses thereby allowing even more damaging UV rays into the eye. That means cataract onset comes even earlier in life resulting in premature blindness. Do we know what we’re doing here? In any case, if it really IS a UV coating that peels off, Oakley really sucks big time! I’ve stopped wearing mine as a precaution.

oakley doesnt have a "uv coating" would you really exepect 200 dollar sunglasses to have a coating that could wear off then when it does you dont have any uv protection oakley doesnt do coating the uv protecion is actually of the layers inside of the lenses so no there is nothing to loose here

SKY Shade I’m an avid Ray Ban fan. Most pf my aviators have never given me trouble. But one fancy RB pair did get patchy in storage. Generally, only nicks and chips force a change to a new pair. I’ve recently ventured into RB Polaroid Chromance range. Loving it so far! Sorry, I have not tried the Maui brand
