In this video we walk through the installation of a OATEY Sure-Vent 1-1/2 in. x 2 in. PVC Air Admittance Valve. The Sure-Vent features a 1-way valve that permits air to enter when negative pressures develop in the piping system. The Sure-Vent closes by gravity to seal the vent terminal at zero differential pressure. The Sure-Vent prevents sewer gases from escaping into your home!

When my spring loaded Oatey vent failed, an inspector friend told me to replace it with a real Studor vent, which only cost me marginally more than the Oatey version. I guess Studor was the only name in the game for so long that a lot of inspectors and plumbers still call these Studor vents, no matter who they're made by.

Can I use this for my washing machine? I want to move it to the other wall so it will be next to the dryer. I had planned on using pex to move the water lines over there and replying the drain over there as well. I was just worried the washer drain would then be too far away from the vent pipe. If I can use this instead, my problem is solved.

Our plumber put the vent inside the wall. I think because it was the only way to get enough height. I put some insulation back in the wall and covered the studs with wallboard. I don't think it is getting enough air as we have smells coming up sink when we first turn the water on for a minute or so. Do these work inside a wall? I guess I could pull the insulation out but will that be enough air? Our drain goes outside the house. Can I put one of these outdoors?
@ErikAsquith
@ErikAsquith 6 жыл бұрын
You can install the Oatey Sure-Vent in-wall, but it must installed at least 6 inch above any insulation material, and it must be accessible for inspection and service, which you can accomplish by installing one of the Oatey metal or polystyrene wall boxes with vent grates. You cannot install it outside and it cannot be exposed to any elements, but you can install it in another room on floor as the drain it's servicing.

@ErikAsquith
@ErikAsquith 6 жыл бұрын
R BEAUMONTII the AAV should never allow gases out, it should only allow air from the dwelling in. However, if the AAV were to fail, it’s possible it could allow sewer gases to escape in your wall cavity. This is why it’s important that they do not seal the AAV in the wall with a piece a plasterboard. If the plumber will not install it outside the wall, just make sure they add a door with a grate on it to allow access to service it and allow air to enter the grate. This would also allow you to smell the sewer gases quickly if it were to fail open and gives you the opportunity to get it fixed immediately.

If you are the only one in multi bath house make sure you occasionally run the other baths , showers , and sinks , toilets as vent traps only work with water in them . They can evaporate from non use and allow gas to vent. Any plumbing with roof vent should not be venting gas into house and i would not replace a vented line with one of these . If you have them already might want to replace them with this new one here in video.

@ErikAsquith 5 жыл бұрын
Pristin V an AAV (in my video a Sure-Vent by Oatey) should only be used when a traditional vent pipe is infeasible or impractical to use. If you do not see an AAV installed anywhere else, it’s likely because a traditional vent pipe is being used, or someone installed the AAV within a wall without an access panel, which is against code.

Erik Asquith , Thank you very much for your reply. I just walked into our bedroom and the air conditioner was running; I got a whiff of sewer gas coming from the ceiling air-conditioning vent! There were times when the smell is so bad I think because it is accumulating inside the house, especially when I have the air conditioner running all the time being in Florida. It is hot and humid. The smell seems to dissipate when I open the sliding door and windows in the early morning during winter when it is cool. I did poured liquid drano, hot water, sealed all the toilets around the base, many times, to no avail. I think it is a venting problem. Must call a plumber? Or is there anything I can do myself to check? Thank you very much!

Pristin V does the smell lessen or disappear once you turn off the AC? Perhaps you have some mold in the duct work or a air filter in need of changing? If your Air handler is in a closet or attic, I would check to see if the smell is present there.

@pristinv500 5 жыл бұрын
Erik Asquith , Thanks again. We change the filter every year, plus we installed a uv light system to prevent mold. I suspect that the vent may not be properly connected to the pipe that goes on top of the roof? Only the master bedroom toilets which is upstairs have the sure vents under the sinks (his and her vanity sinks). The rest of the house has a pipe vent that goes behind the wall, which I assume venting outside thru the rooftop? I will be doing what you suggested to make sure. Thank you very much! I appreciate your advice.

Also, make sure the area where the air admittance valve (vent) is located has enough air to do it's job. If, for example, the vent is in an enclosed vanity it may suck all the air out and then start sucking water out of the p-trap. Then you would get sewer gas coming up into living area. Try drilling a 1 inch air hole somewhere hidden in any enclosed space that the vent is in.

Many plumbing codes prohibit their use in new construction, but encourage their use in retrofitting existing unvented drains. And this seems reasonable to me, even though it may at first sight seem to be a double standard. It can solve your problem without major surgery to retrofit a proper vent to the roof, but if everyone used AAV's for every plumbing fixture in the building, instead of traditional roof vents, it would be a problem for the sewer as a whole. The sewer depends on having ventilation through each customers' roof vent system, and so does a septic tank. The code needs to enforce traditional vent systems in order to fulfill the altruistic purpose of the sewer being vented at each customer's location. If your home is the sole user of your own septic tank, you also need at least one vented fixture with a traditional plumbing vent, instead of an AAV.

Good question. In my case the previous owners/plumbers/DIY'ers cut the pipe and used spray foam to seal it...which leaked water when it rained as the foam started to fail. I removed the spray foam from the pipe, cleaned the outside end of the pipe, and attached a rubber Fernco to cap it. However, ideally it should either be piped into the sewer line or detached from where it meets the main stack to avoid any water leakage.

Change the the PVC Air Admittance Valve { AAV } if you think its not working. Otherwise you may have to open a cleanout and snake your drain line . Many drain lines become root blocked to your septic or city drain if you have trees close to your lines....If you remove a huge tree from your yard its a good time to check your drain lines too.

Keep in mind that the fine print on the AAVs states that you need at least one actual vent that goes to atmosphere (either through the roof or out a wall and up above the roof) in order to function properly. I could be wrong, but I believe it is because of positive air pressure buildup. It wouldn't work reliably if you used an AAV on every single fixture-- and it is not recommended to use an AAV for washing machines But, if your house has at least one proper vent it should be ok.

Why is 4 inches of "rise" required? I've had an occasional issue with water coming out of a vent that looks identical to this and I'm wondering if the inch if rise I have is not enough and the culprit.
@ErikAsquith
@ErikAsquith 6 жыл бұрын
Brandon Ott the 4 inches of rise is required to account for any slowing of water flow, splashes, or backups in the pipe - the vent should not come in contact with any water. However, if you have a clog that slows or prevents the water from flowing and it starts to rise in the vent pipe, you'll likely start to experience a leak from the AAV.
@cosmiclawnmower9818
@cosmiclawnmower9818 6 жыл бұрын
You would want a decent amount of rise because if there wasn't, in the event of a clog, some of the water would back up into the vent and leak out. Ideally, the vent actually should be placed higher than the level of the top of the sink, so the water would back up into there instead. However in many applications, that is not possible due to space limitations in the cabinet under the sink. In that case, you would just want to bring it up as high as possible. The one shown in this video is way too close to the sanitary tee. They should have made that piece of pipe much longer.
@ErikAsquith
@ErikAsquith 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily say that the AAV is way too close to the sanitary tee when it's technically one inch higher then the minimum 4 inch requirement documented in the instructions. However, I agree that making it higher or above the sink is better, but for particular installation I did not have much additional head room available due to the sink base being immediately above the AAV.

It's my understanding that these aav units allow air in to equalize the pressure in the system and prevent a vacuum from sucking out the water in your p-traps. I get that part. But what happens to the actual gases you're trying to vent? do they just come out into the room where you installed the aav? Or do they remain in the system to be vented elsewhere. I'm asking because I'm going to be plumbing out a finished "shed" and this appears to be the perfect solution for not ruining the roof with a vent stack.
@ErikAsquith
@ErikAsquith 7 жыл бұрын
It's a one way value that allows air into the system, but not out - it's designed to equalize the pressure in the system. If it were to let air out, then it would allow sewer gases into your dwell (and in your case, shed) or water if the p-trap were to drain slowly and/or clog.

You need to vent your plumbing per code and to pass a home inspection. Ideally you would use a traditional PVC or ABS piped vent, if one is already installed and available. If this is new construction, or a remodel with access to the studs, then you should install a traditional vent. However, if you cannot install or access a traditional vent, you can use an AAV as a alternative venting solution to allow air into the plumbing system.

J Sm: From what I've found it is most likely an issue with your vent system and possibly an issue with the P-trap under sink (but not necessarily). Does the sink have a vent like the one in the video? Perhaps this would solve the issue. It's possible that the suction is pulling all of the water from P-trap which will allow gasses to come flowing through until water is back in to block the gasses. The vent like in the video. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. By any chance did you try unscrewing the AAV and verifying the drain performance/gurgling as a test? Removing the AAV would have removed any air flow resistance and should have mimicked a traditional vent through the roof top. If the drain performance/gurgling still persist with the AAV temporarily removed, then that might suggest the vent location was not ideal and should be moved.

@@ErikAsquith i did but not until a couple years later. I was a aav believer at 1st, what happened was someone previously had took out a wall and cut the vent pipe going through the roof and hid the exposed sewage pipe in the wall and put a bar over it so the kitchen opened up to the livingroom. So there was a bunch of sewage gas issues until to make a long story short. So the plumber finds the exposed pipe in the wall at the kitchen sink, and says i can use a aav for $25 or i can tear up your wall and see if its possible to run the pipe out the roof for a lot more money. So i was like heck yea the $25 fix. Also i was going to get a new roof soon and asked if i could use aavs on all of the vent pipes so i would have less protrusions, he said yea people do it. Then later on is when i noticed the sink gurgling when washer drained. He said the aav wouldn't cause that, then said oh you have a pipe thats bellying that i need to replace. So spent a bunch of money on that. Then the gurgle came back and i just lived with it for a while as i already spent a bunch of money. So over time i replaced them to see if any aav were faulty, and the gurgle came back. So i was like well im sick of the gurgling almost after 3 yrs, called a plumber out n told him i think i need to run the vents out the roof he said no because the aavs work. So i get a different plumber to try 1 by 1 running the vents out the roof as i was seeing if maybe just 1 needed to be ran out. He told me code was to run them all out the roof but an aav can be used at kitchen islands. Well that didn't wrk so i finally said to run the kitchen sink out the which was a little tricky do to the angle but that finally did the trick! No more gurgle. Im obviously no plumber but my guess the washer draining was too powerful for the location of my sink so it would inevitably pull air from the sink.

However, if it an older unit that happens to fail, it could allow some water to leak out if you have a clog that causes a backup. If you have a clog that causes a backs up, I would recommend checking the AAV to ensure nothing leaks, and if it does, place a towel or pan underneath to catch any drips.

CD ROD AAV’s work well and do the same job as traditional vent stack pipes. However, AAV’s may need to be replaced depending on use and age. If the AAV should fail open , it will allow sewer gases into the dwelling. If the AAV should fail closed, it would stop allowing air into the system. A traditional vent pipe should ideally never need maintenance or need replacing. However, the one drawback is that it requires a hole in roof, which could require maintenance if it leaks. So neither soliton is perfect, but I would highly recommend a traditional vent stack whenever possible.

Are you putting that teflon tape on in the WRONG direction? I'm not a plumber, but worked in a hardware store many years and always advised people to go the same direction as tightening so it doesn't bunch up when you turn it. Hope I didn't give bad advise to hundreds of people. :-O

Stan Lee you’ll still want to ensure the fitting is air tight to avoid any sewer gases from escaping into the dwelling.

Adrian Foca it is a one way value that allows air in, not out, so you will not have gasses escaping into the house.

It's a one way value that only lets air in, not out. When an AAV is working properly, no air should escape.

@@ErikAsquith can it stick in the open position ? The position it's in when it's letting air in ? From dust/crud building up ?

Why are you using teflon on an air vent? No water should be going up that pipe! If water makes it past the height of the teflon, it will come out of the vent!
