OAXACA WALKING TOUR, STREET FOOD
This is what our tour company offered us. Not everything mentioned here is in the video however.
Your guide will show you the highlights of this marvellous colonial city as you wander through its cobbled streets as part of a small group: the Zocalo, the cathedral, Santo Domingo church and the Benito Juarez Market, which will awaken your senses with its maze of small stalls selling meat, jewellery, mezcal, cheese, clothing, leather goods, carvings, vegetables and fruit. You will have the opportunity to try a selection of typical Oaxacan delicacies such as mole (a thick, rich mixture of ground chilies, seeds, nuts and chocolate) that is widely regarded as the country’s national dish, chapulines (grass-hoppers) and memelas, a breakfast specialty that consists of thick corn tortillas topped with beans, Oaxacan cheese and meat.
This will be followed by a mezcal tasting, where you’ll learn about how this traditional beverage is produced and taste a few varieties such as maguey, espadín, jabalí and tobalá.
Your tour will also include a visit to the Museo de las Culturas with your guide, which is laid out in a series of galleries around the cloister of the labyrinthine Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo. On the ground floor are temporary exhibits and a collection of antique books. On the second floor you'll find rooms dedicated to Oaxacan music, medicine, indigenous languages and pottery. More than a dozen other salons have been organised chronologically. Here you'll find Monte Albán treasures such as the stunning gold jewellery from Tomb 7 - among the greatest archaeological finds of all time. This tour is very flexible, so please let your guide know if there is a particular area in the city that you would like to visit. Please note, the Museo de las Culturas is closed on Saturday, Sunday and Monday's. If you are scheduled to do this tour when the Museo de las Culturas is closed, your guide will source an alternative museum.
