I had a planned c-section a little less than 2 weeks ago and I feel... totally fine! I had a lot of anxiety going into it because I knew I'd be awake for the procedure and the idea of that creeped me out, but aside from the day immediately afterward, the recovery has been virtually painless.

@@PTS2024 Good luck! Of course, everyone's body and experience is different, but the (planned) c-section was honestly totally fine. I know a few people who have delivered one child naturally one via planned c-section, and they've all told me they preferred the c-section delivery lol. One even congratulated me when I told her I had to have one. You'll be okay and within 30-40 mins, you'll be holding your baby.

Do NOT ignore a fever after a c-section, DON'T take Tylenol and stay home. Please call your doctor or go straight to the ER! It happened to me, 6 days after discharge, I ended up with a fever and went to the ER and found out I had 2 bloodclots in my lungs and an infection in my bloodstream. Take your health seriously, if you don't feel right go and get checked out.

@@jademchale4310 Just be aware of what your body is feeling. You know your body best. When I called the number to reoprt I had a fever the doctor on call suggested I take Tylenol and see how I felt in the morning, I told her, no, my Doctor told me if I had a fever over 100.4 to go in and be seen, so she sent me to the ER. My doctor was so glad that I advocated for myself and demanded to be seen.

I understand there is a opioid problem. But trying to get people to get threw pain from something like a c section with just Tylenol and motion is inhumane. The mother should be able to care for her child and herself after such a horrible event. Aftwr giving birth to my boys they were so stingy with medication. Mothers put so much into the pregnancy and the birth doctors should listen to them when they say they are in need of stronger relief from thier pain. Especially the ones who had babies themselves... this is not direct hate towards yall. But I do wish medical professionals would keep this in mind

@@TheSarahscorbin omg! I’m so sorry to hear that. Next time you need to advocate for yourself. If nobody listens speak to a manager, then a supervisor. If no luck speak with administration. If administration don’t help you ask for the CEO and insist on getting correct contact information. If you keep climbing up the chain someone will listen to you. I had a C section 2 weeks ago & was at times refusing my narcotics & stretching out the hours in between them. When I was discharged I refused them also. Luckily I had the option to do so. I was in excruciating pain. I did prescription Motrin & Tylenol. Everyone does not have the same pain level you should have been treated better. I’m so sorry.

@@sfindley28 thank you for your kind words. At the time of my discharge, my baby was being transferred emergently to another hospital so he could be admitted to their level 3 NICU, so I was so focused on him and going with him that I didn’t even think to advocate for proper pain medication. But nothing was even offered to me either. They didn’t even counsel me about what OTC pain regimen I could follow. One of the NICU nurses (they are all saints, I swear) was horrified at the condition I was in when I went to see my son the following day and she blessedly wrote out a schedule of Motrin and Tylenol for me to follow. It was all such a shit show.

Had my first born 5 weeks ago. After 40 hours of labor (started with water breaking with no contractions before hand) and about 2 hours pushing, my doctor (and my body!) told me she was NOT moving. Into the OR we went and it went so well. Delighted with the whole process- it’s not how I thought it would go, but I went in ready to roll with the punches, and gratefully feeling good postpartum.

I just had my fifth baby and first csection due to a prolapsed cord. It was definitely scary, but I am so so thankful for how quickly the doctors discovered it and safely delivered her. Recovery has been surprisingly quick! In a lot of pain initially, but everyday got better and better. The nurses were great about helping me express some colostrum while I was in recovery and breastfeeding has been going great. It was a bummer to not experience delivering vaginally again, especially since it’s our last baby. More than anything though I’m so glad she’s ok, because it could have been a very different outcome! Thank you modern medicine! I do wish I had known more about csections before having had one, especially in a true emergency like mine. So thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for the valuable information that you both provide. Could you also do a video on what to expect postpartum. 2 weeks after I had my twins I was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia & I felt perfectly normal & had no symptoms. My bp was dangerously high. My Dr said the only other woman he had seen post pregnancy with that bp had come into the ER actively seizing & went straight to the ICU. I didn’t know that you could get this post pregnancy because I had no problems with my bp during pregnancy. This info might really be helpful for other moms & save lives.

I love this video. I had to have an emergency c section. I definitely had birth trauma there for a while. My daughter just turned a year old and I’ve worked through accepting and loving my experience for what it was. I had a hard time battling with whether I wanted to do a VBAC and have that birth redemption or just opt for another c-section. I’ve recently come to the decision that I don’t need the redemption since I got to go all the way to pushing for a few hours with my daughter. At this point, what matters to me is the baby, not so much the way of delivery. Plus I’ve already gone through the recovery experience with csections so I think I’ll be okay. I feel at peace with it for the next child/children. Thank you for this video, it’s so full of knowledge and detail of what to expect since last time I had no time to really ask questions/have preferences.

@@TheDoctorsBjorkman it was really fascinating to me, the leadup to giving birth the first time, and the way the doctors tried to guide everything as naturally as possible, they were fantastic - in the end there wasn't ever a "natural" option for me, modern medicine helped me along the whole way! Nobody knew at the time, but my baby girl could never have fit through my pelvis, so after an induction at 41 weeks, all the way through from cervix ripening (including 2 foley balloon attempts), to stalling for over 12 hours at 7cm dilated - my baby girl was eventually delivered by emergency c-section. the medical team were so supportive and never once pressured me to an early c-section (even though I had no aversion to one) - they gently guided me through 4 days of labour, and got us all through safely. I'm so grateful for the experience I had, considering I had no idea what I was doing and it all went as calmly and as positively as it could have. ❤️

Aww man. Totally relate. My first boy born 6 years ago ended as well in traumatic c section and hard recovery. I'm 33 weeks nows with second son. As much as my heart yearns for a natural birth experience it does seem safest for the baby to go another surgery but elected this time. I too am having to kind of mourn the loss of the vaginally birth experience. This is our last. Lot ls if people don't seem to understand my emotions around it. Doing a vbac or elected surgery was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. But like you said, his health and outcome is so much more important than my experience. And now we realize it all goes by so fast anways....cheers.

Another indication for C section is if baby has a genetic genetic bone disease. Bones are too fragile to use instruments if things go wrong, and genetic disease can cause an excess of amniotic fluid which tends to cause more bad positioning of the baby (chin up for instance). thanks for your very informative video !

Hi Sarah! I would love to hear your thoughts on the cascade of interventions, c-sections, birth plans, and mom's who would like to avoid certain interventions or c-sections when possible. As you mentioned in the beginning of the video, 1 in 3 births happen via c-section. What is your opinion/feeling on that statistic? I feel like maybe that sounded like a positive. I don't think having a c-section is necessarily a negative thing, but it could be if it isn't what a mom is wishing for or if it could have possibly been prevented. Thanks so much and I really hope to hear an OB's perspective on some of these hot topics!

I was a week early because my water broke. But I tested positive with mild covid despite having no symptoms and fully vaccinated. and so complications with the confusing protocol by hospitals, had me moved to another hospital, made me labor for 20 hrs, and left my amniotic fluid leaking for 28 hrs leading to my baby having infection. They isolated me and my husband and I wasn't able to see my baby for 11 days and I have to literally ask another person to claim my baby on our behalf because the hospital wouldn't allow us to claim him personally. The hospital was understaffed, (overbooked, at least in the covid wing,.. And mild and severe cases are mixed) and oftentimes the nurses would forget about me and I would often times go without pain medication. Still salute to the nurses... They risk their lives for less pay, literally on their toes the whole shift. There are just about 4-6 nurses on the entire covid wing. I literally saw my doctors about twice after my operation for the entire 11 days confinement so it was all the nurses taking all the bulk of the burden. I went without dressing my wound. It was just dressed once the entire confinement.and the discharge bill was laughable in its huge amount compared to the care I received. It was ultimately hilarious and hellish. It was one hellish experience but I thank God he gave me the strength through it all. It was definitely the worst I had to go through in my life. The worst was not being able to see my baby, feed him, not knowing how he is and not even knowing how he looks like. But God is a God of answered prayers and mercy. Now, my baby is breastfeeding with me. He was able to latch on although I still have trouble having to increase my milk production to match my son's already growing need. But we are now together. My son tested negative with covid and we are now catching up on lost time getting to know each other and making up for those times he didn't have much interaction in the NICU because again, also understaffed.(the hospital were we were at are more concerned admitting and earning from more patients and rather than giving quality care or the welfare of their medical staff ) .. Infact my son was confused in the beginning why suddenly there are people talking to him and showing him affection. Pandemic babies are really having it bad... I hope and pray it goes better for other moms and babies... It really boils down to compassion... Sometimes hospitals forget that human trait factor. But I learned more in this experience. The resilience of mothers, the compassion i found from unlikely ordinary people, and that my God indeed answers prayers and always come through in times of need.

Great video. Thank you for all the information given. With my first baby I had a 4th degree tear. It was a traumatic birth and still healing emotionally. Currently, pregnant with my second baby and I am indecisive if I want to go ahead and have a c-section because I am afraid to have another 4th degree tear. I am stuck between the pros and cons. Any encouragement you can share with me?

Thank you so much for this information! I had my first baby on July 24 via C-Section! It was unplanned. I had been induced at 41 weeks but baby wasn’t tolerating the labor and we couldn’t progress past a 7 dilation. Quick question that I hope you guys see! We had our 3 week checkup today for little man and he’s not back to birth weight. The pediatrician didn’t seem worried and just told us to try to feed a few extra times a day (we are breastfeeding). Is there any other tips you can give us to make sure he gains that weight back?

I had an unplanned c-section that was very traumatic for me. All I was told was to be thankful baby and I were fine, never had any debriefing, the doctor barely looked at me, never came to any post op rounds, and right before being transferred to the operating table a a resident approached me (very upset patient) did not introduce herself but asked if I wanted a tubal. Not only was I not in a mental state to make that decision (disassociated so hard), I had no feeling or control in my arms at this point. I felt like all of it could've been avoided and I'm still struggling mentally 7.5 months later. My recovery took months too. I'm terrified of getting pregnant now.

Ugh. I had the same experience. 6 years ago. All I can tell you is you WILL heal and maybe even be willing to get pregnant again. May take time and that's okay. I'm finally pregnant again 6 years later and it's cause I was terrified this time. But hey I learned alot and found new hospital and new doctors and a doing an elected c section and just praying God works it all out! Hope God brings you healing and peace too. I know it's so hard to mourn an experience that you hear so many others have...but I promise you will get better. Took me about w years. Start working out. I started zumba and that really helped my mental state!

I'm an expectant mom (2x), I needed a planned csection because first baby was huge and breech. I came across a channel that had a survey "did you have a planned csection or emergency "? I tried to explain that not all unplanned csections are emergencies. There's a difference between a csection you weren't expecting that follows normal timelines and protocols and an emergency csection when you have to have that baby out in a couple of minutes. They got zippy at me :( said something along the lines of "well if my plan to have a natural birth doesn't happen then its an emergency to me!" Anyways, thank you so much for all this amazing content!

I had internal bleeding after my emergency c-section. 9 days postpartum I had fever, went to the hospital and they had to operate again. It was a horrible experience. Had more pain than with the first surgery. It would be great to make a video explaining what makes complications happen. I feel like the medical team was at fault for what happened. They also refused to take out my catheter the day after the surgery even though I was walking and using the toilet on my own. Over 4 days I had that thing in me plus 3 drainage tubes. I think going into surgery when you know you will be cut open awake is horrific. I would for sure ask for general anesthesia and if i don't see my baby till i wake up it's okay i have the rest of my life to hopefully spend with her. Hospitals seem to be so cruel with mothers, expecting them to not only be awake during surgery and only be given motrin and tylenol for pain management but also you will be kept awake by the medical staff to check your vitals every 2 H, expect to care for a newborn because putting them into nursery is apparently not acceptable anymore and breastfeed and go for walks in the middle of all of this.... i was lucky to have a vaginal delivery and hopefully i will have another one. I have a lot of respect for C-section moms because i would go to therapy for years after an experience like this...

I had a planned c-section two weeks ago. I was very freaked out by being awake for the surgery and I feel largely the way you do -- there is a weird cruelty to insisting women be awake. That said, the whole thing was way less traumatic and horrible than I had expected, both during and after, and the nurses at my hospital actively suggested bringing the baby to the nursery overnight so I could sleep. I was therefor 4 nights and they took him to the nursery each night. The recovery so far has been virtually painless (I've just been taking prescription Motrin by mouth every 6 hours). All of this to say... it's not so bad and I suspect vaginal birth might actually be worse in terms of pain and drama than a planned c-section.
