I’ve had 2 unmedicated births and and I loved it. The last 30 mins of labor was rough, I won’t lie. Especially since I had solo back labor with both of my babies. But as soon as the baby was out, I literally felt incredible. The pain was instantly gone. I can attest to having pressure on the hips and back helping a lot with the pain of contractions and also laboring on my hands and knees, and being in water were wonderfully helpful. If you want pain medication, that is TOTALLY FINE. But if you want to do it natural, you CAN DO IT. It’s 75% mental. You need to believe you can. You need to prepare. Eat well. Move lots, Rest well at night. Stretch often…walk walk walk! Labor and delivery is intense. But that sweet baby at the end is 100% worth it. And no matter what method you choose, you birthed a baby. You are a freaking warrior, no matter what. ❤️

Love love love this. I’m due in 6 weeks with my first. My husband is convinced I’m too petite to have a vaginal birth, but I really want to try, and go as long as I can without medication. I’m fully open to an epidural and c-section, but just want to try, since this will be my first and only pregnancy. ❤️♥️❤️♥️

@@sharalli3112 I can tell you that although I don't know how petite you are It's possible, my 1st was a section but I was induced and I had just about any intervention you could think of because I don't think my body was ready but with my 2nd I had a vbac, and let me tell you what I am 4' 11 I maxed out at about 125 at a week overdue and my daughter was 8 pounds 5 oz And I was able to give birth to her so inform your husband that while you understand his concerns that a woman's body is Amazing and that he'll be really surprised if he'll just stand by your side and support you what you're actually able to do. There’s no such thing as too petite unless you have a form of dwarfism. I’m a little under 5 foot and I did it natural no medicine at all. Like she said it’s really all mental. I was really nervous and the doctors were super patient because I was really jumpy and chaotic but after it was over I was like “that wasn’t even that bad” it was just not really knowing what to expect that psyched me out.

Just to clarify something about epidurals slowing down labor - the meta-analyses mentioned often include older studies where 0.25% bupivacaine was infused into the epidural (a much stronger anesthesia solution than what is commonly used now, which is 0.0625-0.1%) which resulted in women getting motor blocks (unable to move legs or push effectively) which could slow down the 2nd stage. Many RCTs looking at duration of labor after the switch to dilute epidural solutions show much faster labor progress, probably because the epidural relaxes the muscles of the pelvis and perineum so the baby's head can descend more easily. Pain also slows down contractions (tocolysis) and pain relief can actually facilitate more frequent or effective contractions. Thanks for an excellent and informative video! :)

Love that we have doctors on KZbin and not just midwives/doulas who are very biased towards natural births. I suffered from HG, and I’m finally starting to feel a bit better at 27 weeks. If it weren’t for medical intervention so far in my pregnancy, I’m certain I would have died. Ive lost over 25 pounds even with medications, and I don’t want to think about what would have happened if meds/IV’s didn’t exist. Thankfully my baby is doing well, just measuring a bit small. The past 6 months have been the most miserable of my life, and I look forward to using medical technology to make me more comfortable during my labor. More power to those who can do a natural labor, but I’m done suffering.

This! I also have HG and was on IVs till about the 6 month mark. I’m 8 months now and still vomiting a bunch. Baby us measuring small as well but I’m doing everything I can to be a good home for her. It’s been extraordinarily difficult and I’m sure I’ll have another child because I too lost so much weight and almost died as well. I’m absolutely going to get an epidural because I have suffered so much already and I’m glad these doctors (and my own doctor) don’t demonize epidurals. Some of us are just hoping to survive this.

@@chaninatasha1430 I wish you good luck with your delivery! My baby measured small the whole pregnancy and came out over 9 pounds!!! She’s still in the 95th percentile for weight at 8 months. We still don’t understand how she got so big because I’ve never been more thin in my life even directly after delivery. I hope your delivery runs smoothly like mine did! First baby: we had a scheduled induction but baby came early and we weren't quite prepared. I wanted an epidural, but was only 1 cm dilated. I was having terrible bone/joint pain in my hips and pelvis during contractions. Counterpressure with every contraction was a life saver. The midwife offered therapeutic rest: a shot of morphine in my thigh and atarax for sleep. I slept between contractions for several hours. I dilated much quicker than expected and it was too late for an epidural. I used nitrous oxide and it was wonderful. It relieved anxiety and I rested well between pushes. I appreciated being able to feel my contractions and where baby was without too much pain. I delivered lying on my side. I did have pain with crowning and a 1st and 2nd degree tear, but by that point the excitement of having the baby was more important. I had local anesthetic for repairs. I didn't know therapeutic rest and nitrous oxide would work so well. Sharing for anyone who's afraid of an epidural or wants pain control but it's too late for an epidural.

I had two unmedicated births, 48 hours for my first and 36 for my second and i’m so excited for an epidural for my third. It was entirely unnecessary for me to go through that level of pain. Don’t do it! I thought my second would be easier and I ended up having back labor! Giving birth is enough, experiencing that much pain shouldn’t be considered a “better” way of bringing your baby into the world. Thank you for this video.

I was undecided right up until I was in labor. I took the pain as long as I could and then I asked for an epidural. I'm actually glad it worked out that way, as I got a good taste of contractions, but then once the epidural set in I was instantly in a better mood. Relaxed and excited instead of stressed and screaming. Plus no needles needed to numb me for the many many stitches I needed afterwards😅 thank you for explaining all the options in an unbiased way!😊

I used hypnobirthing and it was amazing! I've had medicated and unmedicated births (mom of 4) and something I didn't realize is that although epidural is nice during labor, the pain of recovery is soooooo much worse! Being able to be in better positions during labor and breathing out my baby instead of pushing like a maniac, I didn't tear at all. Recovery was a breeze.

Epidural is really the best. I tried for unmedicated. I labored hard for 27 hours. Baby wasn’t moving down. Come to find out after my c-section that he was wrapped up in the umbilical cord and according to the doctor “would never have been able to come out on his own”. Labor in total was 32 hrs. That epidural was magic.

I felt weird pressure to go all natural with my first birth- which might have been self-inflicted but I was also around a lot of people who were in that mind set. And I remember my mom saying “look. If you want to go all natural, you go for it. But women, for all of time, would have been so happy to have relief in child birth. So if you want the epidural, get the epidural.” It was what I needed to hear to feel ok with my decision either way. I have had an epidural for 3 of my 3 births and loved it every time! I felt so mentally present for each birth and have felt so great physically during recovery. And I plan to go the same route with this pregnancy!

I gave birth a week and a half ago. No meds, no epidural, on my back and induced in the middle of it all. My water broke at 7PM, Friday, gave birth Saturday 10:50AM. It's the induced part that really rocked me, the pain was intense and long, from 5AM till 10:50 I was holding on to the side of the bed and trying not to shout as those false labor pains tore me apart. Pushing was short, I literally pushed 4 times and baby was out, they did an episiotomy and I did tear in one place. I didn't feel a thing. And - my baby was bigger(4, 4 kilograms, cca 9lbs). What I'm saying is, if you can, have your labor naturally, breathe, breathe and breathe. And don't scream! You'll lose your energy that way. The pain is there but it's not the worst. You can do this, ladies!

Another wonderful and informative video! As a labor and delivery nurse I love seeing these videos that help prepare expecting families. I am always surprised by how many people I labor with that honestly have received false or poor information about their pain control options or have done no research. The lack of birthing class options due to the pandemic does make it challenging for people to prepare for labor. Also, for all the mama’s wanting an unmediated labor you really need to prepare and practice the skills you will need in labor before the time comes to have the best experience.

Epidurals scare me. The process of getting one, the possibility of tearing more because I cant feel and having to be coached to push on my back without help from gravity, I fear it may affect the baby and may need other forms of assisted delivery. I feel very powerful giving birth. I feel strong. Your contractions will never be stronger than you are. I really hate hearing the word "pain" when I give birth. However you give birth, you will be so grateful for everyone and everything when you finally hold your little one in your arms. It is magic.

The women I know who had severe menstrual cramps before pregnancy tend to think labor isn’t too terrible. Honestly, my menstrual cramps were way worse than contractions. Also, contractions aren’t constant. I’ve had 5 unmedicated births and am planning another with baby number 6. Oh, and by the way, after I had my first baby, I no longer had menstrual cramps! For people planning an unmedicated birth, be sure to take magnesium supplements (check with OB/midwife first) during pregnancy. Magnesium can help your muscles recover from contractions.

With my first I had an unmedicated birth, but it was very quick. It took three hours from start of active labor (which I understand as contractions during which you can't talk or walk and they're regular) to being fully dialated. Honestly even if I wanted an epidural it's likely I wouldn't have had the time to get it. But if this time labor is long (most likely going to be shorter but it never know) I'd probably get it. I can't imagine going through that for 24 hours or more like many women do. Contractions were so intense and close together, maybe that's why I progress quickly, but I can't imagine doing this more than a few hours - it's exhausting. You have to go on with an open mind... Every time.

When I was in labor 4 years ago, my birth plan absolutely called for an epidural. Got to the hospital at 3am, 5cm dilated, and wanted my epidural STAT. Unfortunately, there was no one on staff who was able to give me the epidural for several hours. This upset and panicked me so much that they had to give me oxygen and something else that made me very sleepy. When I finally did get the epidural (hallelujah) it only worked on the left side, regardless of moving, but no one ever came back in to adjust it. So now, with my second, I’m really praying that when I go into labor, the hospital will be well-staffed and equipped to handle these issues! Thank you guys for the video!

I've had three unmedicated births and am planning on another one for baby #4 coming in the fall. I have no judgement towards those who choose epididurals or other medicated pain relief. For me personally though, I feel such a sense of accomplishment after unmedicated birth that I feel would be different with a medicated birth. I also feel like the second baby and placenta are out I feel "normal". I love not waiting for an epidural or medication to wear off. Also, I love the freedom of movement.

The women outside of the Western world have for ever done births without an epidural. In my country, it lasts for about 90 minutes so it can help some but not that much. If women put in their heads that they will not make it without epidural, then they won't. It's all in the mind.

I had reservations about the epidural for my second after swearing by it with my first. I didn't listen to my intuition, but the delivering doctor coupled with a terrible support (who I no longer accept in my life). I had a complication due to the epidural and it made my recovery far more difficult. This time I feel more confident advocating for myself and have more confidence in my support. I think a smooth delivery is largely about your mindset.

Getting induced in 3 days with twin girls my MFM stongly encourages getting an epudural since they may have to reach up into my uterus to pull baby B out breach even though both have been vertex my whole pregnancy. Totally envying those with a genuine choice in pain management though, but I’m also probably underestimating the pain since these will be my first, and so I appreciate your expertise and explanation.

@@maritzaelizabetho.o.v5734 Hello Maritza, I am scheduled to get it next week. I wanted to wait until the third trimester. Having said that please note that I don't work in an inpatient setting and my interaction with patients is limited to those who are healthy and seeking preventive care. If I was working in an inpatient setting or if I had daily contact with sick patients I would not hesitate even one bit to take the vaccine. Please also note that I wear a full PPE at work and my entire family is vaccinated. Lastly, I don't meet people outside work and home to minimize my risk of exposure (so no grocery shopping, no salons, no restaurants-none of that). The reason I am giving a long response to your question is that I don't want you to feel that physicians themselves are concerned about the safety of the vaccine. I am not at all concerned about the safety of the vaccine-I just wanted to avoid getting fever (which is a common side effect of the vaccine) before 3rd trimester. Hope this is helpful-happy to answer any questions you have.

Never thought I would have a baby again but life teaches us that its not over after your first life ends. Cant wait for my baby boy but also worried about the situation with my autistic daughter. Fingers crossed everything goes well and quickly too. Baby is due in April 2022.

This is so encouraging and helpful to me. I’m almost 34 weeks pregnant, and have been watching pregnancy videos, birth stories, child birth classes, etc. Most of the content I have viewed has shed a really negative light on using pain medication during labor. It made me feel like if I have an epidural or some other form of medicated pain management during labor that I would be considered a failure. I’m not sure how my labor is going to go, but if it’s at all possible I would love an epidural. So, this makes me feel like my decision is valid and I’m just as strong if I do go that route.

No one talks about light medications for natural birth. Tylenol and Coca-Cola really helped. Also, a hot water bottle and Icy Hot muscle relief. I wish they would allow you to eat at the hospital because chocolate would have made me feel better. Contractions felt like period cramps. Also, at the peak of contractions take a long deep breath and exhale slowly. Then breathe normal through out that "wave" of contractions. While you are are in between contractions--REST.

Yes they do! It can delay labor and one is more likely to have interventions when getting an epidural. From labor slowing down to the doctor wanting to add Pitocin to speed up labor this can cause contractions to become even more intense.

Additionally, receiving an epidural makes it 4 times more likely that your baby will end up in a posterior facing position which may end in a C-section or an extremely painful attempt by the doctor to turn the baby internally.

I arrived at the hospital at 11 AM and they checked me and said I was 7 cm dilated. I thought great three more centimeters to go I got this and I’m going to follow through it with no epidural because it shouldn’t be long now. Well I didn’t give birth until 7:57 PM I was in so much pain for so long I had no energy to push when they asked me to push and my water didn’t break so they broke it pretty close towards the end. I also got 1 tear. Once the baby was out I was happy but still in pain and I thought good I’m finally out of the woods and I’m going to feel no more pain. I was wrong. After the numbness went away, I was once again in so much pain for 4 days after birth. I could not sit, I couldn’t stand up straight, i couldn’t lay comfortably, it was very difficult. The first 3 days I got 2 to 3 hours of sleep total. I also kept peeing every five minutes and it was starting to upset me because I spent more time getting up to use the restroom then with my baby. In went in very confident and prayed with every contraction for pain to go away but my experience was not good all. I wanted another baby pretty soon but after this I’m not so sure, it was pretty traumatizing for ME. This was just my experience, other mamas have a much more positive experience. They are the mechanical versions of the traditional method of Opening Doors for Baby, and all use the Plastic Surgeon's technique of gradual, painless, 'skin tissue expansion', which are further explained in my KZbin video 'Avoiding tearing - Opening Doors for Baby to 10cm'. In Hungary usually no pain medication is used during natural labour (except lidocain for the stiches at the end). I had my first baby 4 weeks ago. I asked for some pain medication and I was told you need to feel the pain to successfully deliver the baby - and that was my pain management. :'D Though I could be in any pose I felt better.

the research I've done there's positions you can give birth in while having an epidural you don't have to be on your back they just need to assist you so is that like a hospital policy thing or is that just what's easier

Do you have to be dialated to a certain centimeter before you can get a epidural?

I’ve never been able to sleep even with the epidural. With my 1st, the epidural didn’t fully worked, but I had no side effects. 2nd baby, the epidural worked but after it not being able to walk for a couple hours and stuff and the back pain after the epidural like omg the worst. Now with my 3rd, I’m hoping I can have him without it.

when exactly is "too late" for epidural? Or when is the perfect timing?
@vla179

Too late is if the baby is already in the channel coming out. Also anesthesiologist might say it's too late if your contractions are very close and you can't sit still. In order to get epidural you have to sit still and don't move. Anesthesiologist needs a time to run at least two tests to make sure the epidural needle is in the right place as well.

Or if you're going through what's called transition. It's the last stretch before you're ready to push, and you're typically in great pain and shaking. That's not a state where you can sit still enough to get the epideral safely.

I want a non medicated birth but I’m preparing myself for an epidural. Currently 20 weeks with twins. Not only am I high risk but there’s a good chance I’ll have to deliver via c-section. Also I’ve never had a baby and I’m not sure how I’m going to handle it

I'm pregnant with baby #2. My son is 8.5 but I was 19 when I had him. I had no pain meds or epidural and had him naturally, he was 10lbs 6oz. He was big for my 5'4 frame but I thought labor was easy. Pregnancy sucks lol

Does scoliosis make placing the needle for the epidural more difficult?

Yes and make sure you notify your doctor and/or anesthesiologists before you go into labor. This way, your spine can be examined to see if an epidural is even a possibility prior to delivery so if it's not possible then you have time to choose a different method if pain management. Plus, usually makes it quicker, easier, with less trial/errors. Hope that makes sense and helps a bit

Are there pain relief options, like the opioids (not in the spine and taking away sensation in legs) that don't pass to the baby that you can take in the later stages of labor? I don't wanna feel much pain but I have lots of issues with medications and tend to get the rare side effects. I wanna be up and mobile as much as comfortably possible- showering, stretching, breathing hypnobirthing type stuff but also if the pain is too much to bear, which I expect it to be in the later stages not the earlier ones, I want some help where I am still able to move and be in control to take the edge off. Where it won't cause issues to me or baby. (Needless scare me, especially long ones. I can't handle laughing gas or numbing paralyzing things as they send me into a severe panic attack, I have bad issues with epinephrine which is in most local anesthesia, And have had severe chronic migraines caused mainly by meds) I've heard of a walking epidural, what's that? Is it a low dose where you can move around as desired? Also I really am concerned and wanting more info on the recovery rate effects of the different types of labor and pain relief options. I hear you have a faster easier recovery postpartum going medication free (low/no medical intervention) and a longer harder recovery if you did get an epidural, C-section or other medical intervention with medications. (Assuming this is all low risk vaginal delivery) Also, the contractions postpartum, the uterus shrinking down to normal size. Is that pain identical/similar to labor contractions? Are there meds for that that don't effect breastfeeding? What's the point of getting an epidural or other pain management medication for labor to remove/ minimize the pain just to have to go through it all un-medicated postpartum? If you're gonna go through it either way (not fun don't want much pain) then why add nasty side effects of medications along with it?
