Some tips I’ve learned along the way: I’m a mom of four girls and these are my postpartum tips…. Since I’m going through the newborn days right now with a one week old, the tips are ever clear in my mind. 1. Give yourself lots of extra grace -- you just brought a tiny human into the world 🌎 🌹 2. It is A-OK to let even immediate family know that you don’t want visitors for the first few days or weeks when arriving home from the hospital 🏥- you just birthed a baby and you shouldn’t have to entertain people in your own house 🏠-- unless you just want to. But remember it’s perfectly ok to ask friends and family to wait until you get settled in at home before asking them to come over and see baby. My last baby was born a week ago and I’m just now sort of ok with visitors. 3. It is A-OK to let someone else take care of ALL the housework in those first few days/weeks after delivery… especially if you’re breastfeeding. Remember you won’t be able to do it all, just focus on taking care of yourself and your baby and delegate care for other children and housework/errands to your partner or family or friends. Your body needs plenty of rest even if It’s you’re not breastfeeding your baby. 4. DO NOT PUT YOUR NEEDS LAST… it can lead to feelings of sadness and mild postpartum depression. Take that shower 🚿 you desperately need & deserve -- so you fell Ike a human one again. (works wonders for engorgement for those breastfeeding mommas) Dry and style your hair at least once a week and put on makeup even if you’re not going anywhere. It will make you feel like an attractive human again & not just a dairy cow 🐄 (for those breastfeeding mommas). Seriously, take time for yourself…. If your baby is crying and you need to eat, EAT, then care for baby. It won’t hurt baby to wait even just a few minutes when you need sanity or some food in your belly. 5. Rest when you can. Period. If you have the chance to rest and you’re tired, REST. Don’t try to work on housework or your to do list, just listen 👂 to your body and get the rest that your body needs.

Wanted to share a tip here for anyone expecting a baby that worked great for us (our pediatrician shared this suggestion). Instead of using baby wipes, get several sleeves of the cotton rounds, like the pads you use to wipe off makeup. Dip the small round pad into some water and use that to clean baby’s bottom. Our little guy literally NEVER got diaper rash. I feel like even the 99% water based wipes still have preservatives in them and can irritate baby’s skin. Those little cotton rounds were also just the perfect size for wiping a tiny bottom! Anyway, just wanted to share this tip because it worked great for us.

Congrats on baby! A tip I saw from another mom with the Hakka is if it doesn’t have the suction at the bottom is to have a mug near you and put it in the mug when done with it. For me it was a lifesaver. Thought I’d share for other moms out there.

@@bethanytherrell7799 Yes, get a hair tie and tie it to your bra strap so that it can hold the Hakka in place and place it on the opposite boob while she feeds to catch the let down - you have to squeeze the Hakka to have the suction effect to Help catch all the let down.

I'm 6 weeks postpartum and advice to first time mommas who plan to breastfeed--see lactation as much as you possibly can in the hospital! It's covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) through insurance while you're admitted in as inpatient with the hospital until you're discharged and if you need support after discharge, just make sure your provider (PCP, OBGYN, or child's Pediatrician) submit pre-auth for lactation. Don't be afraid to call your insurance to see which providers and what exactly is covered. And take ALL the supplies you can from the hospital. I didn't have to spend a dime on postpartum care (except for additional sanitary pads). This beautiful and educated couple's videos have been an integral part of my and my husband's journey to parenthood. Thank you, Doctors Bjorkman!

No freakin' kidding! I had my first baby 34 years ago, and we didn't have any KZbin videos, classes (only a class in labor), products to make things easier, and my mother couldn't remember much for some reason. It was frankly one of the hardest weeks of my life, and no one had even warned me it would be hard! Now my daughter is pregnant, and I'm getting her EVERYTHING I didn't have. I know it will be ROUGH, but I think she still has no idea. Thank you for your honesty. It would have helped me tremendously if I had even had a clue what was going to happen.

So impressed you’re already recording a video! Great job mama-it is SO hard, but you are doing great. One thing that has helped me with breastfeeding (specifically with needing more hands to hold down baby’s arms) is to leave baby swaddled while you feed her. My girl (11w) has been so strong from day 1, and will literally brace herself against me and push away from me with her little arms, then scream because she isn’t getting fed. Leaving her swaddled takes away that problem!

6 time mom having my last one. One thing I'm doing different this time around are caddies. I have a nursing cady filled with things I know I'll need while nursing, like burp rags and nursing pads, the Hakka, etc. I can take it all over the house with me or if we go somewhere, and this way I don't have to ask someone to bring those items to me. There are some really cute fabric cadies out there. I also have a bath cady so I can easily have all the bath things I need for wherever I decide to bathe her (soap, lotion, towel, etc.). Another thing is no diaper pale. I'm using the Munchkin waterproof bags that I will empty in the outdoor garbage everyday. Diaper pales are way too stinky and gross. Last tip is disposable wipes for poos and cloth wipes for pee diapers. I cut some fabric up and filled a wipe container with the damp fabric that I will wash after using. I've done this before and it saves them so much from diaper rashes.

I would LOVE to see a video on how it was having a new born and dogs. How was it adjusting? Did the dogs feel neglected? What did you do for them to coexist smoothly? Any new rules for the pets?This seems to be a reality for a lot of new moms and a huge transition but there’s not very many videos on this topic. In my opinion brining home a new baby is such a big deal when you until this point your dogs have been your “baby”.

Congratulations! Everything you said is so accurate. I had my daughter 5 weeks ago and everything from my vagina feeling like it wanted to fall out to the excruciating nipple pain from breastfeeding is 100% true. I definitely overwhelmed myself listening to and reading about all the feeding, sleeping, etc. schedules and whatnot out there. One thing I have to say for new moms is definitely get help and don’t assume things are supposed to hurt or be a certain way. If I wouldn’t have reached out to an LC and gotten help, I would have given up on breastfeeding because my nipples were cracked open. Those first two weeks are the hardest! To you and all the new moms, we got this!!
@TheDoctorsBjorkman3 жыл бұрын
Congrats to you too mama!! And I can’t agree with you more. GET HELP EARLY. Breastfeeding is legit super hard sometimes, and I absolutely understand why people switch to formula. It hurts, it’s hard, it takes a long time for baby to figure it out sometimes. There are a ton of barriers to success. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and encouraging other mamas!!! Hope you and your new babe are doing great!!
@faithharrison37553 жыл бұрын
After a week or so if it still hurts it’s not normal- get help. Also use your finger to remove the suction from baby’s mouth it will save your nipples when you delatch. protip: cold cabbage leaves feel really good on sore breasts as they are the same shape as large breasts. The hakka can go in a cup to prevent it from being knocked over. Also consider filling your breast milk bags only the amount your baby needs in the beginning: 2ounces so that it’s easier to portion.

One thing I needed to hear postpartum when I asked if I would feel like myself again was that the version I was looking for of myself had changed. Motherhood changes you. Hopefully for the better, and the person you were is still there, just a slightly different version with new priorities. It was a challenging concept to understand and I didn’t really understand until after having gone through it. One book that I will recommend to all first time moms and what will make a great baby shower gift is “Good moms have scary thoughts” by Karen Kleiman. I wish I had it right at the beginning.

This is great info thank you! I wanted to add that I learned recently that when a car seat is not in the car it can be too upright and a sleeping newborn can cut off his or her air supply, so if I were going to leave the newborn in a car seat for an extra few minutes inside, I would keep a good eye on the baby or make sure the car seat is leaning as far back as it does in the car.

I really appreciate your forthright honest descriptions and advice! About breastfeeding: I know many moms do experience the sore nipples etc. but it's not a given. I had some problems getting daughter to latch for the first five days but she suddenly got the hang of it and we were fine after that. Never had soreness or need to lubricate my nipples with her or with our second baby. I also just wore a stretchy sports bra and pulled it down on one side to free up the boob for breast feeding so that was super-easy and inexpensive.

@@TheDoctorsBjorkman I think that's just how being a first time parent works! It's such a learning curve! Another couple tips if you don't know : Onesies can be put on over their feet rather than pulling it over their head. It's especially good if they have a blowout! Always put the new diaper under the dirty one before you take it off and fold the dirty one under them (in half dirty sides together) before you wipe them, then remove it. Also munchkin change liners (I think that's what they're called) are great for everywhere. Put them on top of the nice change pad cover so you don't have to remove and clean it all the time, on the boppy because the covers don't come off to clean. They're great!

Ugh the best videos come from the moms that are going through it rn! I just had my baby 5 days ago and things are rrrrrough! This is baby #1. The whole “youll get it when you have kids..” thing ive always heard alllllllll makes sense! This is hard. And yes the gravity on your privates is so hard to deal with while running around doing laundry. I threw the whole “keep a log” thing out the damn window. Trying to stay on a routine is impossible lol. For first time moms, feed with in 4hrs. Listen to your instinct and your baby. If your baby is still hungry FEED THEM MORE lol quit screwin around wasting time trying to console. Feed them till their little Dracula claws relax! Get out the gas and burp n back to bed! I ran and grabbed some gas meds at walgreens and its already helped! Baby peeing out the diapers? Get bigger ones! I broke down n bought pee pads bc everytime we layed the baby down he peed a river! Every room was ground zero yesterday! Were first time parents, were learning, were tired 😅

Wanted to add you can take your own pads and MAKE your own padsiccles. Buy some aloe for sunburn and some non alcohol witch hazel and add some of your essential oils like lavender etc mix is all together and put it on your pad. Also the nail clippers I found a pair that had a built in flashlight and it is SOOO helpful!!! I never heard of the dermaplast but much obliged on the idea! I personally like to refill my peri bottles everytime with warm water made a life of a difference for me! In regards to breastfeeding highly recommend coconut oil!!! I recommend finding a lactation consultant before the baby reaching out to a le Leche league or a breastfeeding peer counselor! It should NOT hurt! My daughter personally didn't latch at all because of a tongue and lip tie and a shoulder dystocia and I also have milk duct dysmorphia which I definitely felt like the IBCLC in the hospital failed me.... I wound up on a pump before being discharged because she wouldn't latch and her bilirubin was going up I said "I dont think I have the right size flange" and she said "most people are a 25mm or a 28mm" left the room and never asked about it again. Took me over 2 months and a lot of money to find out why my nipples were winding up 3/4 of the way down the flange regardless of the size flange I had bigger or smaller. I really enjoyed this video and all the recommendations I am due 12/10/22 and my oldest is 3 years.... Hope all is well with you and your family!

First congrats second bless you. This video was so realistic lol, thank you for being real and honest because that is how people learn. I could tell you were trying not to be like WTH but having a baby is kinda like WTH lol. You are going to be an amazing mom.

I just found your videos. Thank You so much! I'm 6 weeks pp with my 2nd baby and found this video helpful. It's not been easy.. I'm an older mom (38) and had a hard pregnancy, a hard delivery. My baby was born not breathing, low heart rate, low blood sugar, bruised black and blue all over her entire body because she got stuck in the birth canal. She ended up with severe jaundice. Was in the hospital for 6 days. Little babe is good now except she has diarrhea. But I think that's due to my diet change.i had pre-eclampsia pretty bad. 3 weeks after she was born I found out I have severe pancreatitis, gastritis, and some other issues. Last week I was in the hospital for 4 days and had to have a polyp removed out of my stomach, and gallbladder surgery. I also have a 2.5 year old who keeps us on our toes.. there is no rest at all! But I'm home with my babies and also lost 43 lbs since having the baby!! Having to eat healthy for your life will do that! I absolutely love your videos!

I love that just because you're doctors and make more than most you don't justify expensive items just for the hell of it. To say you got the safety first nail clipper because it was $2 vs Fridamom for $12 and saying it's ridiculous is such a breath of fresh air. I keep seeing "it's a bit pricey but..." It makes me rethink how much I'm willing to spend on somethings too and really go "do I NEED this?"

Thank you so much for posting this. I really wanted to watch this because I have been thinking a lot about what I might feel like physically and emotionally postpartum. I'm wondering about people who will want to see the baby and when I'll be ready for that because my husband insists that a day after I get discharged from the hospital, he wants to let his family have a gathering and see us. I just don't think I'll be up for it knowing myself and thinking about the condition my body will be in. My husband says that it should be a celebration and he doesn't want to make our families wait to see our baby. I get his point but we are not on anyone else's time but ours. I don't care about pleasing anyone until I feel like we should go and show off our baby. Ugh, I don't know what to do.
@fentonquandt41552 жыл бұрын
You should definitely try talking to him again. "Celebration" can wait, baby ain't going anywhere. He should he more supportive and understand what you're about to go through. Have you ever showed him a video of how birthing looks like and what you and baby will go through? I'm glad I talked with my husband about this before hand. So far I'm 35 weeks and no one knows. I decided to keep our pregnancy to ourselves because I didn't want any family to be calling nor visiting because of the baby. I already have enough going on with this pregnancy to also have to deal with people that I don't want to deal with at the moment. When baby is born I want to have plenty of time to be alone with baby and husband while I heal and bond with both. I don't wanna be nursing baby or taking a nap and suddenly have a bunch of people knocking on my door to "celebrate". I know all I'll want is to chill out and be alone with baby and husband. When I'm done healing and I feel like it, I'll let others know that we had a baby. So far only 2 people know and they've managed to drive me up the wall asking every other day "when baby's coming?" as if I have ordered baby from Amazon or something. And that's only 2 people, I don't want to imagine if it were the whole family. What a nightmare! Hope you're able to talk to your husband and may he understand your concern and respect your feelings/wishes. Good luck!

Simple tip i was given for new born nails- mom can just lightly trim the baby's nails with her own teeth. Our lips are so sensitive, it helps trim the nails without any harm to the child. Tried it. Very safe n easy.

I'm just over 32 weeks pregnant, and your videos have been such a help. I've made a list to annoy my doctor who is providing the maternity care, but I'm finding myself frustrated over the fact they don't take my concerns to heart. I've had nineteen broken vertebrae, so I'm worried that due to how messed up my back is, that I won't be able to deliver the old fashioned way, but they are so dismissive over the idea. Ugh, anyway, that's enough of my sob story, but thank you so much for these videos.

This might sound odd, but the first week pp I peed in the shower while I let lukewarm water rinse down from my belly button. I also startet to gently massage the vulva area and whole bottom area with a free from all shower gel (no perfume, no parabens and so on) while in the shower and it felt so good. Like a sore muscle getting a massage. But really gentle and it also helped clean the clutter from the lochia.

About the feeding thing, I told my husband one of his main jobs when we have a kid is to make sure that I'm eating food. I did a baby project in high school where we had a fake baby for 24 hours (this one actually cried) and I didn't eat anything for the whole 24 hours. I was just focused on taking care of the baby.

Thank you❤️ My tip is in regards to burping post feeding - every baby is different, and while some don’t benefit from burping others most certainly do. My baby girl is so uncomfortable if not held upright for a bit after feeding, as soon as she makes a big burp - she snoozes away and sleeps so well.

As a mom to 2 now (6 weeks and 2 years), my recommendation with regard to trackers is DO NOT USE THEM if you have anxiety or depression. I was feeding the trackers when I thought I was giving myself piece of mind, and in hindsight I would have sought help with my baby’s latch/suspected ties. She nursed enthusiastically and it looked good, but her weight gain was slow. #2 is gaining beautifully, there’s zero pain when nursing (after the first couple of days), and I haven’t used any tracking system. I just know it’s been less than 3 hours since she last started nursing

Hey mama! I am on my fourth baby and just discovered that some (not all!!) vitamin D drops are formulated so that you can simply put a drop on your nipple right before baby latches, and voila, supplemention complete! I use the Nordic Naturals brand drops. Wish I’d have known this the first time!

Thanks for this video, Sarah! It's somehow really reassuring that an OB/GYN goes through the same struggles as any other new mom. Would you say that this experience also affects your job? Any things that you see differently now or do differently? Just curious to know.
