ObadiahParker

Күн бұрын

This is the original recording of Obadiah Parker (Mat Weddle) performing his acoustic cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya" at Xtreme Bean Coffee in Tempe, AZ in 2006.
That year, a version of this video uploaded by a fan went viral. By the time the video was removed from KZbin, it had amassed over 5 million views. The popularity of the video attracted widespread media attention, led to international radio play, the top spot on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts, and inspired The Blanks' cover of 'Hey Ya' on the hit TV show Scrubs.

Amen Leon. First time listening to it since maybe '09. Still as good. Maybe even better, in a way, since turning back to one-hit wonder phenomenons like this almost always disappoints. This surely didn't.

+Perfumaphilia This is why it kind of bothers me when people blindly write off rappers as talentless hacks just because they're not into hip hop. Sure, there's a lot of garbage out there when it comes to hip hop, but that goes for every genre. If anything, many rappers are very talented but record companies would rather have them churn out catchy tunes with crappy lyrics since it makes them money. That was actually the point Outkast was trying to make with this song, since a lot of people ending up loving it without necessarily caring about the messages it contained.

I first heard this via a limewire download when I was in high school something like 16 years ago and it blew my mind. Me and my friends were obsessed, even without having seen the video at that time. 5 minuets ago, something just reminded me of this out of the blue, I don't even know what - and despite not having heard it for over a decade the name Obadiah Parker poured straight out of my brain onto my keyboard without a second's hesitation. That's what you call an imprint on someone's brain! Unbelievable performance!

the line " why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here?" pulls my heart every time i hear it. (he missed adding in the statement by Andre.. "ya'll don't want to hear me, you just want to dance... " which puts the whole song in perspective.

Yeah it still impresses me to think that when this song came out, everyone (including myself) thought it was a dance song with cheerful lyrics about love and happiness. Andre is a genius, and this cover is one of the best covers in music history.
@vampiiko350
@vampiiko350 5 жыл бұрын
He didn’t forget to add it, that line would make no sense in an acoustic cover. The whole joke of the song is that nobody actually listens to the lyrics and Andre knows this, it’s the reason andre made the song the way it is in the first place
@simplycy919

Ghiaccio / No it’s not. The whole point of OutKast’s “hey ya” is to contrast those lyrics with an upbeat track. The contrast is symbolic of two conflicts; the inner conflict between monogamous love and sexual desire, and the external conflict between artistic expression and commercial reality. The key line being “y’all don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance.” From this point on in the song the lyrics cease trying to be meaningful. The singer at once abandons his hopes of finding something meaningful romantically, and of saying something meaningful lyrically. This is all lost in this stripped down version, and we’re left with nothing but gross sincerity, which, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, is a hallmark of bad poetry. Andre 3000 is a genius. Anybody that thinks that it took a chubby white hipster beta to bring the true meaning of this song out is a fool.

Robert Barlow I never said anything about Andre not making a good song. Jokes come in many different formats, and the whole point of giving the entire song an upbeat tone was because he knew it would be deceitful; hence the joke. You never refuted my point, you just wrote a lengthy comment about the obvious nature of the song to try and sound like an elitist prick, while inadvertently agreeing with me. This is a good cover of a great song. It sheds light on how depressing the song can really be. You don’t have to like something to think it’s good, so get of your high horse. Edit: it’s funny how cruelly you’re judging a man who just wanted to cover a song. You’ve never even met the guy lmao. But of course you have to automatically pull racially-charged insults and tasteless slurs out of your ass to judge a man who is probably a much better person than you. But this the internet after all Edit 2: I could go on about how you’re taking the “gross sincerity” quote severely out of context, but I’ve waisted enough brain cells tonight writing this comment

The first time I heard this version - Obama wasn't even president yet. It was the dead of winter and I was thinking hard about suicide. I was in one of the worst places I could be within the depths of drug addiction. I found so much amazing beauty in this song it helped me through that dark winter. I can hardly listen to it today because the nostalgic euphoria I get from it is overwhelming. No voice can convey the writers emotions as well as this man. The way it blends with the acoustic guitar would have legends of music past in aw. Truly lightning in a bottle - this performance.

Next morning at breakfast I was about to impress the wife with my new tune. Just as I strummed the opening chord, the Outkast version came on the kitchen radio, instantly! Funny how the world works. This guy gives you the wake up call if you weren't awake when the original was made. Now go back to the original and notice the parts that were skipped in this cover, and it makes the original so much more impactful compared to the first time you heard it, especially with the conflict with the lyrics vs. upbeat tempo and the transition to the traditional hip-hop theme at the end. Total genius. I have to thank this cover dude for opening my eyes to this, because, full disclosure, I didn't catch it the first time around. Maybe I was too young or just not as focused on the lyrics. The lyrics call out the "listener" on it too, and people just somehow still don't notice! I would bet I wasn't the only one to miss the depth of it all the first time around.

Quintessential KZbin. Way back in 2008 before all the sponsored content and ads bullshit. Back in the day when you gave a 1 to 5 star rating, and no algorithms tracking your every move. I was 26 when I first saw this video... still visiting when I'm 37.

13 years and I always somehow swing back to this, first song I learnt to play and I performed it with my uni roomate in front of everyone in my college as well as dedicating it to two of my teens-twenties relationships. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me and also that you did Andre proud I'm sure, and it also brought to home the contrast of my relationships to my parents. Good luck everybody and thanks for being here along with me on this journey.

Wow, so glad this found me again(2021). Outkast of course was amazing. Outkast’s original version is fascinating that it hides the pain with it’s upbeat sound that I shook to in all the clubs. This cover beautifully exposes that pain and gets you to lean back and think... Thank you Outkast and Mr. Parker.

That's the power of music. You listen to the original and you're wanting to party and have a good time. ...you take that same song, throw out everyone and everything and add 1 guy with an acoustic guitar and you hit play... And suddenly you're very still, and quiet, and you're wishing your best friend and his wife could have worked out, and tearing up that the thought of his 3 kids that you held in the hospital the day they were born have to grow up in broken home.... It's sad, it's haunting, and it's beautiful - one of the most surprising and capturing covers I still have ever heard.

The fact that Outkast hid these absolutely brutal soul crushing lyrics behind an uptempo beat is masterclass. It's another metaphor stacked on top of the song about how we cover everything with a thin veil of fake fun and happiness to hide what's really going on.

I would love to believe that somewhere there is a lake with a beautiful cabin perched next to it. There is a campfire burning, built with the wood this guy chopped last season. He is sitting next to is wife while he sings and plays his Taylor acoustic into the night as his kids dance around and ask him to "play that one again, daddy!" No 9 to 5, no obligations. Just living a simple, full life filled with love and music; all this possible from the money he made off this one cover.
