Good explaination of different bat houses and what not to do, but DONT USE MESH! You didn't even describe how to attach the mesh which must be done by stapling every 2in at least. Cutting horizontal grooves is the way to go and I expect the DNR to stop advocating for mesh as bat can become entangled in improperly installed or old mesh. Get groovy everyone!

Very Nice Video demonstration... and right on time, I'm replacing a 15 year old bathouse on a rainy February day... I do have one question... why not cut the vent gap on the front also at the same angles as the roof to prevent driving rain from going straight in? I have also found that just using rough-cut lumber leaves plenty of "toe grabbing tooth" on the wood for parents and babies to move up and down... if someone has an old screen laying around, that also works great... thank YOU so much for sharing and refreshing me on things to consider! Thumbs UP all the way and you have a new subscriber!

What do you do about mold/mildew which forms on the outside of the house? Does it also form on the inside? This seems to be a problem here in northern Michigan.
@mattg61062 жыл бұрын
Also a Michigander here and would be interested to hear other ideas but also have a few of my own (untested). In the reptile hobby we use things like spray foam and silicone with coconut husk, sand, or various other substrates to create relatively mold resistant enclosures. I've also used grout to cover the outside of foam blocks which works really well in certain situations but may be less effective outside. It's not the prettiest solution but covering the wood in a black silicone and then pouring sand over it while the silicone is still wet may provide a fairly weatherproof layer to the house.

@@desaraedecamp9751 the chaulk is really overkill. You could put a line of wood glue there if you're really concerned about drafts but there will be air flow from the bottom anyway.

Wood glue or silicone sealant. GE Silicone 2 has mold inhibiting properties and is safe as long as it has been allowed to fully cure and offgas. Both are probably overkill anyway though. Natural areas that they would sleep like behind tree bark aren't totally air tight.
