CONTINUED: The subject of ECM ground is extremely important. Lots of issues are completely related to sensor ground issues, and not the component themselves. THanks for participating. I enjoy your questions.

CONTINUED: The CAN network may talk to a slower (LIN) network by means of a "Gateway". Gateways are devices that match two unequal speed networks together. The gateway circuit may be, and usually is, inside another module like the instrument cluster module. Makes sense?

Good question... Your model is probably a Non-CAN scanner. CAN became universal in 2007 so yes, you'd probably have to replace it. Too bad. Thanks for posting.

You're asking multiple questions in one. With reference to ground you should never get more than 100mV with engine running and 300mV with engine cranking. The other pins depend on the COMM protocol being used. I suggest my book "Automotive Vehicle Networks" available where books are sold including amazon. Thanks for posting.

1) DLC has no connection to gateway. Gateway receives CAN-high/low and LIN wires and matches unequal speed networks together. 2) Sensor GND feeds the sensors through the ECM & Chassis GND is just that. Sensor GND is a perfect indicator of how well ECM is grounded. 3) Yes, CAN-high/low is linked to DLC. THe topology (star, token ring, etc) is really irrelevant. Regardless of how the CAN network is connected, two CAN wires will always reach the DLC from where you can do lots of diagnostics.

Wow... This is a very smart & deep comment, thanks. A reminder, I do have an "Automotive Networks" book, which goes deep into the subject. 1st Question: Yes, all networks are connected as NODES, usually in a start topology. 2nd: DLC you can check all those, plus the network itself. 3rd: Power, Gnd & 5 volt reference (5V = ECM alive) 4th: Only 1 protocol per network. LIN is slow (seat, A/C, etc), CAN is fast (ECM, TCM, BCM) CAN is also being slowly replaced by a faster protocol. Thanks.
@ADPTraining

You make a good point. The DLC is an output point and doesn't provide anything in particular. It is a source for testing. The ECM gets Ground, then through a circuit, also provides a filtered "sensor Gound". The only reason it's also on the DLC is because the developers of OBD-2 "CARB" though it would be nice to have for "TESTING" purposes. Chassis Gnd is often a source of trouble at the ECM. Sensor Gnd on the DLC is a fast way to determine if ECM is grounded properly. I've written a lot on it.

Thanks Mandy Awesome.. One Last Question, does DLC talk to Gateway via CAN or it uses any other PIN in those 16.. 2) What does Sensor Ground and Ground in DLC have anything to do..?. i can understand that B+ on 16th pin is to provide scanner the power. not sure the sensor ground and ground purpose?.. 3) does CANhigh and CAN low from DLC is connected to Star network or it is connected to PCM.. pls advise.

i assume, DLC, PCM or ECM, BCM are connected as node in network. Is it possible if I Can SCAN BCM when my ECM is bad for U codes?... second, what should i check if DLC is bad, just power, ground,sensor ground??. Third what should i check for bad ECM, just for power and ground?.. 4th). all latest card that have CAN network can also talk in other protocol such as LIN, BEAN etc.. is that right. I assume CAN is mandated only for PCM/ECM communication, not for BCM or chasis is that right.

I have an Audi 100 2.5 TDI AAT 1993. I am trying to change the OBD2 to observe the DTC by my ELM. I connect the K-line to pin 7, L-line to the pin 15, the chassis ground to pin 4, the signal ground to pin 5, and the +12 V to pin 16. Still, I could not connect to the ECU. What should be the problem? How can I communicate with the ECU? Is there any suggestion?

Gerardo Acosta 1996 and Newer Vehicles use the OBD2 standard communication protocol. You must check and make sure the OBD port on your car is wired according to the OBD2 standard. You might have to make some changes, such as placing a jumper wire between pins 7 & 8. (Just an example, do NOT attempt without research first). Find an OBD port pin-out wiring diagram for your specific car (Year, Make, Model, Regions), and compare it to the OBD2 standard communication pin-out wiring diagram... My first advice would be to search and read up on some Forums specific to your car...
