I was there in person for this (I took 4th in the 300 meter hurdles out of Fairfax HS). This was the greatest athletic feat that I have ever seen in my life. That race was over, and it looked like Obea wasn't even trying to catch the guy for the first 275 meters. Then, as he was coming off the turn, you could see him change gears, and then he just walked the guy down. Seeing it in person, it was amazing. The entire crowd was chanting his name. The year before my relay team made it to the State Finals, and I was anchor leg. I got the stick about 10 meters behind Obea and it never even crossed my mind that I was going to catch him. He was that great.

I was there too, made it to the state championship that year and came down from my hometown of Fresno, CA. Was sitting on the backstretch with my buddy like... "Damn, bro...you think he can get him?" No lie...we had some serious doubts until he hit that curve. I had a chance to meet him a few years later and he's a pretty cool guy. I hope he is doing well.

Professor Leach are you from Fresno or is Obea from Fresno? I’m asking because I’m from pretty close, from Sanger

I get chills watching this. It's not that the guy Obea catches is slow, it's just that Obea was just so amazing at this point in time.

It's so strange that god gave him this talent, for some reason he just couldn't take it all the way. I wish i had been giving this talent. for ten years since high schoo i trained sunday to sunday trying to break 50 seconds for personal reasons but couldn't even break 52. But the bottom line is I hope that he serves as an inspiration to young athletes. Obea, one of the greatest of all time.

I remember him coming to NY for the HS Indoor Nationals in 95. They broke the 4x400 record at the time and he split a 46.7, there was a time during the race dude was literally laughing because it was so effortless. Before 95 the West didnt come to the indoor nationals because it was always in the east. That year Muir broke the 4x2 and 4x4 national records and i believe the following year took down Jamaica at Penn. Shame what happened to him. Definitely one of the greatest ever

Man the LA Jets use to drop the baton on the 4x4 relay on purpose so Obea can catch everybody and he did. Man Summer track was a fool back then!!! Angela Williams was a beast too🔥🔥🔥🔥

I remember watching this guy run at the Penn Relays back in 95. I'll always remember this kid bc he was so fast. I never heard of John Muir before than but after that event, I'll never forget. They came all the way from California. St. Jagos from Jamaica that year was the fastest team to beat and he beat them I believe.

So sad that he could have gone on to possibly break the WR maybe even a 42 400 in his prime if he would have stayed healthy. :l Still, this is one of the most amazing things. He closed a 50m gap with 200 to go.

Only thing I’ve seen that rivals this is Matt Boling’s anchor leg at the Texas state championships. He caught up from way behind like this, running a 44.73 split as a 100 meter runner. Though it’s more impressive how Obea paced himself so well in this video.

Wow! That's incredible... Saw him run in AAU Nationals in Iowa back in 95. That little guy was so powerful--The best I ever seen. There were several guys who ran for LA Jets who were just unbelievable. Had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with the guys during USA Junior Nationals two years later. It's a shame they all fell off the map.

this is the first time i have ever seen a obea moore video. it literally gave me chills to watch the ending. I had to watch it several times over just to make sure it was some fake video. My fastest 400 is 48.1. I could have been 50 or 60 meters ahead of this guy and we would have still met at the finish line at the same time. Amazing! This is better than Darold Williamsons indoor 4x400m race were he came from behind to win.

yeah, US high school track stars are unlike football or basketball stars. seems like more often than not success at that level is NOT replicated in college, pro or Olympic levels. still, i remember seeing this dude at 96 Indoor nationals in Boston. He had school records from the 100 to the mile. still impressive feats in my book.
