The Obel Lake Side Quest is quite the frustrating experience in Final Fantasy 8 Remastered but hopefully my guide makes it less so. Here are some tips to help you on your way.
1. Activate the No-Encounters toggle or use Enc-None (Diablos ability). This quest is annoying enough without enemies, I would dread to think about it with random enemies lol.
2. Diablos x3 speed when searching for the colour rocks in the Esthar region. You need to take small steps only.
3. Ask yourself what the heck is this quest actually about? Who is Mr Monkey? Then please tell me when you know :P

If you CANT find the Scroll reward at the end , go back to the shadow at the lake and talk to it again, he is gona say to visit the peninsula again (4:22 place) interact again then go back to the small island and the scroll should be there.

I had the same thing happen, when the scroll did not appear I went back to the shadow at the lake and he told me to go to the train tracks (which I believe was missed in this video), so if you follow the train track north from shadow you will come to a little bridge that the train crosses over, search that bridge for a FIRE draw point. After that I went back to the final destination and the scroll was there, hope this helps

Its one of those mysteries that never come to light. Who was the shadow? who was the monkey? why are rocks talking? luckily wandering around looking for invisible spots to click while random battles bothering you the whole time if Diablos hasnt learned his no encounter ability usually makes the mystery so frustrating you dont give a shit what the answers are in the end

I did this quest and got the 3 stars and went to Minde Island and the exact location you showed and nothing. I'm not sure if my game is bugged or not

Same. I retraced my steps. Went back to obel lake. At the break draw point, selected do not drow, went back to the eldbeak peninsula for the clue and then lastly minde island. The scroll appeared right away.

The main thing that always bugged me about this quest was how it was all on the muddied graphic world map and had no extra levels with backdrops involved. Especially when you don’t get to see what the shadow in the lake, Mr. Monkey and the Liar Rocks all look like up close.

Right? I was gonna ask if there was any indication in-game that this quest was a thing. Not a single NPC says, Hey--go to Obel cuz the Loch Ness Monster or something is there.

How is it even possible to do this quest without a guide? First of all, why would somebody go back to the Timber region after you get the Ragnarok and start randomly clicking X all over the surrounding region? Maybe looking for hidden draw points? Maybe some people actually went around the entire world map, pressing X at every step? Even after doing all that and discovering the black shadow at Obel Lake, whilst the clues should make it rather easy to find the monkey and four locations, how are you supposed to know that the next thing you need to do is to throw rocks at Obel Lake until it "skipped many many times"? And then, after the last rock-clue from the monkey, how are you supposed to work out it reads "Mordred Plains has treasure"? And then, when you get there, how are you supposed to work out which of the rocks is telling the truth or not, or actually you need to listen to the rock that's actually lying to you? And the other clue, to take "Time off" at some penninsula...I get it's a clever riddle, but how would you even know its a riddle when the clue is TRETIMEASUREATMINOFFDEISLE? And whilst both the Luck-J scroll and three stars are both ok, for the time one would have to put in to work all of this out without a guide, I'd have hoped for much better rewards.

I suppose it depends on how one might use the 3 stars. Personally, I don't cast magic in the traditional way during battle, and I certainly don't use Cerberus for that matter, so Expendx3-1 isn't really useful. Although refining it into 100 triple is nice, put it on speed and combine it with auto haste and one character will have super fast ATB, perfect for spamming limit breaks

Wow this quest in the end is very annoying. But one thing you should say in this video. This QUEST cannot be done on Disc 4. I tried. On disc 4 you can't trigger it. Thank God I had another savefile on disc 3. Thank you for this guide. Without that I never would find out how it wokrs. I mean when you know that the red rock always lies it's just a trail and error. But if you don't know, this quest can be a pain in the ass. Thank you for the guide. 3 more trophies and I have the platinum :) with your help of course :)

I still can't get the Luck-J scroll even though I was in the same exact spot you were and I did examine the tip of Eldbreak Peninsula for the clue. Anyway you get the trophy for getting the Three Stars not for the scroll. Thanks for the guide though I found these and others you did quite helpful.

The part of the rocks is a complete nonsense. The hitboxes of the "things" doesn't help at all, and also two places at once having the same name confuses everything (Eldbeak Peninsula, which is an island, and a part of Esthar's continent, so I checked only the island not knowing that was a part of Esthar and of course I found nothing).

Thank you for the content! I was able to make it on my own spending a lot of time in the past: if you get back to the lake shadow after getting the four carved stones, it will put them in order for you and reading the letters in reverse will give you the location of the Three Stars. Also if actually take "TIME OFF" off the pillar inscription, it will give you Minde Island as the treasure spot. Eventually, the lake shadow suggests to "take a break" near a railroad bridge: it refers to a Break draw point. Better to this with the Ragnarock in one go and before the Point of No Return!
