Great as always, Mr. Kitsch! This movie was a huge hit over here in Sweden. Asterix has always been popular here. That uncharacteristic response from Obelix at 3:15 is due to the English dub not being entirely faithful to the French script. Asterix actually corrects himself and sarcastically says “I meant a magnificent athlete, like you, Obelix.”

I can see why this was the most expensive French film at the time, the sheer amount of special effects is pretty crazy!

In the original french version Astérix doesn't intentionally insult Obélix's weight. He does accidentally call him fat, but then changes it into a more positive adjetive (something along the lines of "athlete") when Obélix asks him what he just said. Astérix's respect for his friend and Obélix's denial about his weight remain faithful to the comics.

Tbh even as a kid i didn't like the live action movies for the portrayal of its characters. Glad we have some real fun animated ones to make up for it. (Also i just wanted to say, as a frenchie i know Asterix was known overseas but i never really heard english talk of it so i'm really glad to see dudes like you giving it the attention it deserves : )

@@yellothekunt6826 I'm a spanish speaker from Uruguay and I've been an Astérix fan since childhood. I own the comics, I have all the animated movies except for one, and there are a lot of fans of the franchise in Latin America. Just for the record, this is the only Astérix live action film I like, mainly because of childhood nostalgia, but it's still below the animated films. I don't speak a word of french, but I know about the mistake in the english translation because I know both spanish dubs.

in the dutch version (movie and comics) Obelix gets offended by the term fat, rather refering to himself as 'well built' or somewthing among that line, in dutch its called 'volslank gebouwt'.

Why do I feel that this film was more of a "Best of" special instead of a movie? It's like they crammed a lot of the comic's best bits into one go.

Off topic question but why does asterix’s voice sound familiar?

His English voice is a Dutch actor called “Olaf Wijnants” But he sounds similar to Richard Hammond so it’s either that or you’re Dutch and recognize him from the Dutch dubs of Disney movies.

If I were to nitpick this great film, it has a lot of subplots; one of which (Panacea's clone) is unnecesarilly introduced and ended in the epilogue, after the final battle.

The only thing i remember about this movie is being very terrified of the tarantula pit. To this day i hate this scene
