I remember my French teacher back in primary school showed us both this and the first live action movie as a reward once. Obelix’s voice honestly surprised me cause I always imagined him with a deep yet infantile buffoon type voice

This was my introduction to Asterix. I didn't get into the comics or the films until later on.

One of my earliest memories was watching this on TV back in the 1990s. Good times. Finally got it on DVD when I went to France as a teenager, complete with English dub. Must rewatch it soon. Maybe show it to my younger cousins. 😁

I don't recall hearing that "Asterix Conquers America" was released in the US when I was a kid. And I first heard of them when their game on the Sega Genesis came to America.

The film did get a theatrical release in Canada (under the distribution of Alliance Vivafilm (now owned by eOne Films), but that's pretty much it for the film being released in US territory.

After being used to the German dubs for all these Asterix movies since childhood, it's very jarring hearing them speak in such thick British accents. Also, Obelix's voice is so high pitched. I genuinely didn't know he was supposed to be the one speaking at first in a lot of these scenes. Even as a kid I always felt this was one of the weaker films in the series.

Honestly though, Craig Charles voicing Asterix in this works so well, he’s got that excitability mixed with confidence Asterix needs

Probably the weakest of the Asterix films. You still reminded me how beautiful it looks.

I will have to say sadly the following to come, Asterix and the Vikings was far weaker, because now they tried to be modern, and have cellphone jokes and so on and... urrrgh. And that one hurts me because... A: I grew up loving Asterix so I wanted it to be good. B: I'm Danish and that was a Danish co-production, the only Asterix movie to be a Danish Co-production... and it's so bad... C: It has such beautiful animation but the jokes and script are just awful. This movie still had strong points, they were never out of character. Asterix and the vikings is just bad.

@@MoonPhantom Honestly I don't buy the critisim on Modern Joke. It was always kinda the part of the series. Characters keep referencing modern technology or mentality as a joke how absurd it is. Mansions of Gods are best example and it is my favourite movie and easly best film since 12 Tasks which I might remind you also has Modern Circus jokes, Commercials, Metro Station and other stuff. The Vikings have a same problem as America how underwhelming the story is. The New Main Character is better than his comicbook counterpart but he acts like any character from weaker Don Bluth movies. My God, Vikings as characters are great. They have dark humor, climactic presence but never they are too serious so the joke they can survive one hit from Obelix is the best joke in the film. I think the feminism is extremly weak subplot but it was so much better than it was done in Last Live-Action "In the Middle Kingdom". Sadly I think the weakest link in most movies is sadly Asterix. He is a very boring character if he cannot make any clever plans. In America I was yawning but in the Vikings I did not. But I wish the story was better. Unfortuanatly Asterix plots are often one of two: - Romans need to be stop. - Somebody was kidnapped and Asterix and Obelix go save this person. The best exception was Asterix and Cleopatra which has the absolutly best storyline out of any Asterix book.

@@38procentkrytyk Well we can disagree on what movie is worse. On a more positive note though. "Asterix and the mansion of the god's." is actually amazing. I was so done with Asterix at that point, the comics were never the same after the author died and just got worse, the animated movies hadn't been great, the life action movies I was not into. And then Mansion of the God's came out as a 3D movie and I was just NOT interested at all! My friend then made me watch it and.... I laughed so hard... It was brilliant. Asterix was back, it was the funniest Asterix film I had seen for... What? Twenty years. It was actually amazing and if you have not seen it I HIGHLY recommend it. Especially as an Asterix fan, it was such classic Asterix humour. The movie after that, "Asterix and the secret of the magic potion." ... It was fine, it was cute. It wasn't nearly as good as mansion of the gods, but also not bad, certainly not as bad as the worst of Asterix. It was just an okay pretty charming movie, I didn't dislike it, just didn't love it either. Unlike Mansion of the God's I absolutely adore. And I know they are producing an 3D animated show for Netflix now and I believe it's the same team that made these two movies that is gonna make it... Well if they continue with the same quality I will be looking forward to it, if nothing else it should be charming.

@@MoonPhantom Yeah, the "Secret of the Magic Potion" was not as good. It has this modern vibe which annoyed me but I still love the jokes, the villain is actually threatning, it sets some interesting points about Panoramix and most important factor... it is an original story. I'm glad they do their own thing instead of just adapting the comicbook. And I don't know how about you but I love how Mansions expanded on original story. In the comicbook the Romans build the houses, kicked the Bard and Gauls just destroyed the buildings... nothing much worth mentioning. The movie adaptation shows us how Gauls actually try to be like model citizens of Rome. It is just perfect.

@@38procentkrytyk Magic potion felt much more like a generic coorporate movie. Like this was a movie that could have been about anybody or taken place in any fantasy setting. It wasn't a bad movie... But it didn't really feel like an Asterix movie. It kind of lacked the special humour that makes Asterix. While Mansion of the Gods, wow that felt like an Asterix movie! The humour and jokes were so spot on, the characters, the parody aspects. That too. Asterix has always worked as a parody and a satire. And Mansion of the god's just satirises so many things perfectly... The Romans forming a union because they are unhappy with their treatment just had me howling in laughter, that was so good. Meanwhile Magic potion doesn't really satirise anything, it is a very standard fantasy plot... It's servicable as a story, but there isn't really any commentary or satire on anything. And isn't especially funny... It's cute but not really funny so yeah... It lacks that Asterix identity to be honest .And feel much more generic and like it's deliberately aiming at a broader appeal.

I've only seen Asterix versus Caesar in full, but I really like the art designs of the classic 2D movies more. They look so beautiful compared to the more recent CGI ones. I saw 5 minutes of a CGI one and lost interest quickly. I don't hate CGI completely, but it's everywhere and it will never look as awesome as literal human crafted animation (stop motion and traditional cel)

@@DarkOverlord96I'm entitled to my opinion. I didn't ask for yours. I prefer traditional animation. If you prefer CGI animation, then I won't bash you for it. That's your opinion Don't call me disrespectful either. It's disrespectful to all of those wonderful animators who made real art with their hands, to be replaced by software on computers like what Disney have been doing for the past 20 years

@@DarkOverlord96 Having a preference isn't disrespectful. And while CGI movies can look nice there are far too few 2D ones being made. It doesn't have to be only one or the other.

@@bazbanter9329 as a guy studying 3D animation, you're entitled to your opinion or preferences or whatever, but you're still being a bit disrespectful because CGI and 3D modelling and animation STILL require a lot of effort and skill to do right and their existence does NOT disrespect others, wth is that all about? You're kinda talking about 3D animators like they're soulless A.I.s that create things with the push of a button and its just incorrect. Ive been drawng cartoons and studied some 2D animation for the longest time btw, I just wanna learn new skills with Blender and 3D modeling and combine animation styles or make it look like stopmotion, you can do that too and many other things. I'll agree that too many 3D cartoons look same-y in terms of style, like all the modern Disney films with female characters looking like Barbies.
