@analogsynthaficionado60273 жыл бұрын
The last of the classic OB sound before the introduction of the OB-8 which was not the same. I love the OB-Xa, but I cherish my OB-X and FVS. It would be awesome if Tom Oberheim would reissue the OB-X and Xa, but the cost would most likely be too high. Most people today expect something for nothing and complain when a synthesizer costs more than a $1,000. One can't expect a high quality instrument with excellent build quality for next to nothing. The classic Oberheim's will go down in history and continually rise in price.

Nice job and thanks for sharing this with us. This sound @ 15:47… it seems like such a 'simple', 'basic' patch that a lot of today's synths ought to be able to make… but they don't. That's one of many textures that the OB-Xa offers up with ease. I have an OB-Xa. I also have an OB-6 from DSI/Sequential… it's a different architecture and filter vs the OB-Xa, and if what you want is the sound of an OB-Xa, the OB-6 is not going to deliver… unless you don't have an ear for this stuff. Synth sounds are only worth spending time with if they move you, inspire you… and the OB-Xa does that in spades… remember how Oberheim poly-synths inspired Eddie Van Halen to write a whole new crop of songs in a totally different direction while still sounding like Van Halen.

The one synth that did it all, back then. Nothing comes close to that sound. Nothing.

Back then, that was true...but currently,there are many options that provide an indistinguishable sound(both in hardware and software.) Dave Smith's OB-6,Behringer's UB-Xa,Synapse's Obsession,SonicProject's OP-X Pro 2 & Arturia's OB-Xa V.
@analogsynthaficionado60273 жыл бұрын
Au contraire, the OB-X, FVS, and 8 Voice sound even better than the OB-Xa. Sadly most people have never seen or played these rare synthesizers in person. The FVS and 8 voice in particular have a massive sound. Don't get me wrong, the OB-Xa is a fantastic sounding synthesizer, but with each iteration after the OB-X, Oberheim made design changes to cut costs and the sound did change. By the time the OB-8 was introduced, the raw and gritty sound of its predecessors was no longer evident. The OB-8 is a very nice sounding synthesizer, it just isn't the same sound though. With the introduction of the Matrix series, the classic OB tone was totally changed.
@Bernd_Bruening3 жыл бұрын
I’m still looking out for an OB-X, since its unique sound character is different from the OB-Xa. Maybe I’m lucky some day and find a broken OB-X for a reasonable price.
@analogsynthaficionado60273 жыл бұрын
@@Bernd_Bruening It took me many years to find my OB-X, and when I did, I paid quite a bit for it. It was worth every penny though. It definitely has a unique character that the OB-Xa does not. The OB-X does sound similar to the Four Voice, but the Four Voice still has a slight edge to it that I prefer. Both are awesome synthesizers.
@analogsynthaficionado60273 жыл бұрын
@@HighlandStudio91 I'd like to know which modern synthesizers provide an indistinguishable sound compared to the OB-Xa. None of those you mentioned do. Do you own an OB-Xa?
@skrapadelix4 жыл бұрын
Fantastic sounds and a great performance, reminds me of Cluster in places. The sawtooth on the OBXa sounds very similar to the Prophet 600 which I guess is not surprising as both Synths use CEM3340s. Subscribed to ensure I don’t miss parts 2 and 3
@dags19654 жыл бұрын
what modern synth would get you close to the OBXA? The Prophet 08?
@skrapadelix4 жыл бұрын
dags1965 the Behringer UB-Xa will be very very close to the original OB-Xa and should be available soon. The Prophet 08 is a fine synth but is closer in sound to the Oberheim Matrix 6 and 1000 than to the earlier OB-Xa

Listening to your other demos of OB-XA right after listening to this (maybe not the same FX were used) the real one is less brittle more polished on top and fuller in the bottom end and pulls on my gut brain emotional strings better ;) I don't know, but my gut intuition tells me it's not quite the same experience but close. In a busy mix, it might not matter but as a stand alone play there is difference so far basing on your videos imho.
