Re: the car accident... she's a young working mother in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if the medical attention she got after the accident basically amounted to a paramedic checking her for signs of a concussion and then telling her to seek medical attention if she thought she needed it, which she then decided she didn't, because the medical system in the US is a joke, and lots of people avoid going to the hospital unless they think they're actively dying because of money issues.

Some doctors sure are weird. A male friend of mine (after having 1 kid and not wanting more), tried to get a vasectomy but the doc said "no, you may be married, you may be like 40 years old.. but we don't know if you won't want another kid in the future". I don't unterstand those docs. It's one thing to say "Think about it and come back in like 2 months" after having a talk about pros and cons but its another thing to just say no.

So, when I was in college, my anatomy and physiology professor told us a story about her friend. We were doing our study of the reproductive system and she told us that her friend and her husband decided they were done having kids, so she got a tubal ligation. She got pregnant. After that surprise, the husband got a vasectomy. The wife got pregnant AGAIN. My professor said she never would have believed it was true if she didn't actually personally know the couple.I have no idea what the odds of that happening are, but I thought you'd find it interesting.

I've been pregnant 3 times, live vaginal birth 3 times, all healthy and full-term. I 100% had my period for the first trimester of all three pregnancies, confirmed by each doctor I'd had for each child (different doctors for each kid as I was in different places of my life). I did NOT know I was pregnant with my first child due to having regular periods, my doctor was sending me to have my thyroid checked, as I'd been having unusual symptoms but also having regular periods; I was pregnancy tested and turned out I was pregnant. At the ultrasound it was discovered I was already into my second trimester. When I got pregnant with my second child, I knew based on a physical reaction to meat lol, I was still having my periods and was actually on my period when I got pregnancy tested, they did a pelvic at that appointment as I was currently bleeding, they discovered I was in fact having a period; that period lasted it's normal five days, I continued having periods for two more months. My third, I knew right away I was pregnant (experienced at this point ;) ) and, again the doctor was concerned I was still having periods and so they wanted to see me the next time I'd had my period, so I went in and they did a pelvic exam and also determined I was in fact having a true period. The periods stopped, again in my second trimester. So, I don't know the anomaly there, but it IS possible to have real and true periods while pregnant.

40 years ago, I asked for a tubal ligation and found my husband had to also sign before the hospital would do it. I had been pregnant at the time so it would be after the pregnancy or during a c section if required. In the meantime, my husband learned how big the surgery would be for me when it was just an office visit for a vasectomy . He went ahead and had the vasectomy, only I didn’t have to sign anything. Are they still making women get their husbands permission while men can decide on their own?

Even today, doctors can be sexist with scheduling tubal ligations. A woman could need to be married, have kids and be dead sure she doesn't want more. I want to add, if a medical professional brushes off your concerns without explaining why you shouldn't be worried, try seeking out a new doctor.

I had my tubes tied at 21 after my second child was born, that was 13 years ago and I also had to get a signature from my then husband on the form. I had it done directly after my planned c-section. The form had to be signed 4 months ahead of time. They said it your even a day late then clearly your not that adamant about not having anymore kids so they wouldn't accept it if so. Luckily my ex husband didn't want anymore kids either or I would have been at his will. It took me 3 years to get divorced from him bc he refused to sign the papers just to be spiteful so I'm sure if he had wanted to keep me barefoot and pregnant he would have refused signing for my tubal.

If you have a uterus and you're serious about not having children, consider getting a bilateral salpingectomy (sal-pin-geck-to-mee, 'geck' as in 'gecko') instead of a tubal. In a tubal they clamp/cut/burn the tubes. In a bilateral salpingectomy they remove the tubes completely. The failure rate of a bilateral salpingectomy is lower than that of a tubal because the tubes are totally gone. This also provides some protection from ovarian cancer as some types actually originate in the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries. It's a laparoscopic procedure, you can go home the same day, and it's usually covered by insurance the same as a tubal.

This is such an interesting case, thanks MDJ!! It proves the importance of why we always do pregnancy tests when female patients of reproductive age come in. Even with tubal ligation or “ongoing periods” (PV bleeding), there is still a chance of pregnancy. And missing a pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy could have awful consequences!

Facts! When I had my bilateral salpingectomy, I felt comfortable in its effectiveness because I was only able to find one documented case of this procedure failing (as defined by the patient accidentally becoming pregnant later), and reassuringly that paper did say they too were unable to find any other evidence of this procedure ever having failed and they conjectured that the case they reported on stood a chance of being the only failure ever observed ... BUT THAT'S STILL A NON-ZERO CHANCE! Yeah most likely the procedure was done poorly or otherwise not up to current standards in some way -- BUT STILL! There are virtually never 100% guarantees in anything in medicine and I wish people would grasp that lol.

I wanted to have my tubal ligation done at the same time as my cesarean with my youngest, but my obstetrician and gynecologist advised me to wait at least 3 months until the swelling had gone down, so after about 3 weeks I got my 2nd IUD. In the 5th year of having the IUD, I had my tubal ligation. That was 6 years ago now and complete success, no more babies! The problem with getting the tubes tied straight away is because they are still swollen, the clips can't be done up tight enough, or they have to use bigger clips. Then once the swelling does go down, there's room for an egg to slip through. This comment isn't directed at Dr Jones, obviously 😆 but this is exactly how my gynecologist explained it to me, so I hope it helps someone else understand.

The reality of being one of those 10-13 in 1,000 is something I cannot describe. I have 1 ovary, and had tubal litigation during c-section with my youngest. Two months ago after being admitted to hospital for severe sickness which turned out to be hyperemesis, I was informed I was 9 weeks pregnant. My own local doctor whom I had already had appointments with never even considered a pregnancy test the odds were so low. I got 4 days to get used to the idea before I went through a ridiculous amount of trauma miscarrying, on the 3rd day I was admitted back in to hospital and went through things I will never forget. Sorry to anyone who took the time to read this, I know it's only my story but I never ever thought anything like that would happen to me...just make sure you are fully informed of every little thing that could happen x

@@everythingrebekahlorraine for sure! The price is a huge difference, but if I recall there is a bigger focus on midwifery in New Zealand. I’m interested to see how that plays a role in the delivery room as it would mean a larger focus on complicated births at hospitals. Though I haven’t done a ton of research in recent years, and not sure if I’ve ever looked specifically at NZ for their prenatal care and post natal outcomes.
@greenerpasturesgrl
@greenerpasturesgrl 2 жыл бұрын
@@karawbear I live in NZ and originally from the UK. Here in NZ (I’ve had a baby here) you can get a midwife throughout your pregnancy for free who does all prenatal visits, checks, blood and urine tests, prescriptions for anything you need including antibiotics etc, they’re there for the birth, and do 6 weeks of home visits/postnatal care :) including weighing the baby and tracking growth, helping with feeding. There are also hospital midwives on hand during labour and delivery and they’re also there if people don’t want an independent midwife. Generally an obstetrician would only be required if the person requires a c section or if there are any complications throughout pregnancy/labour, and normally they would just consult at the level that MDJ is at. Any clinics they run would consist of more complex things rather than just general pregnancy and baby updates. If someone came into A&E with a pregnancy related problem or complications like hyperemesis or bleeding etc and needed to be admitted then the junior doctor (house officer or registrar for O&G) would generally see the patient in A&E and if they were admitted it would be under the consultants name, and they would lead the ward rounds in hospital for the gynae patients. So I guess it’s quite different. Everything is also free. Hope that helps. Any other questions id be happy to answer :) obviously MDJ would know more about the specifics of her job and be able to compete to the USA, which I know little about
@karawbear
@karawbear 2 жыл бұрын
@@greenerpasturesgrl that absolutely sounds quite different! In the USA there are not proper standards for midwifery laid out so I could technically tell people I’m a midwife and not get in trouble for it. Because of this midwifery is not common and often discouraged as a whole by physicians regardless of the individual qualifications. Not to mention, insurance hardly ever covers a midwife or a doula and so you pay thousands out of pocket for their services. I have not had my first live birth yet so I don’t have personal experience, but I do plan to find a midwife who has nursing certifications (since as mentioned that is not required) to help me through birth. I’m not sure I’ll be able to afford postnatal midwifery though as that costs extra in most cases. I hope MDJ makes a comparison video that encompasses the diversity of care in the USA while making the comparison of the separate countries, because state by state it can change how dangerous it is to give birth.

Having had a previous miscarriage and being 40 it really worried me, but when they finally did a pelvic exam after months of sending me for emergency ultrasounds, it turned out to be harmless cervical polyps caused by the pregnancy hormones, which eventually fell off when I gave birth. Subchorionic hematomas (blood clots along the uterine wall) are also very common and can cause huge gushes of blood with no damage to the baby…my best friend had that and gave birth to a very healthy boy. I had my normal periods right on cue with all the same symptoms for 4 months into my pregnancy. Luckily I was doing a pregnancy test every week because we were trying for a kiddo so I knew right away. I brought it up to my dr who said it must have been implantation bleeding the first time. The 2nd time I called freaked out and he said it was probably spotting from my cervix being sensitive. The 3rd time he asked me to come in, did a bunch of tests, told me the baby was fine and he didn't know why I was still having bleeding. Same with the 4th time. After that it stopped. My hormones where fine, no complications, and it was always at my normal period cycle and felt the same with the same amount of bleeding I normally get. I have heavy cycles so I was scared the whole time till it stopped, despite what the dr said, that I was gonna miscarry. All these women in the comments saying it happened to them, and all these drs saying it's not possible. My dr. said it wasn't a possibility of it being a period and must be something else, despite the evidence other wise, and them never being able to find another explanation. Maybe a study needs to be done to find the cause?
@christinefindorff5328
@christinefindorff5328 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree there should be more studies on this! There’s so much about women’s bodies that we just don’t understand, especially with hormones and pregnancy. However, since as she mentioned a “period” is the shedding of the lining of the uterus, if there is a fertilized egg implanted in it then it won’t shed the lining. So definitely has to be something else but why it would occur so regularly like that is beyond me. I’d guess that it might have something to do with certain hormones affecting sensitivity but the fact that we don’t know means that there should definitely be more research done on that!

When most woman bleed during pregnancy first thing they do is run to the doctor 🤑 just to be told they’re fine or need to come back for observations which is more money for the doctors 😮‍💨 Its most likely all about money , pregnant woman are jackpots for doctors 😅 I know & know of over 12 females who have had their period while pregnant, yes period ( heavy flow , 7 days , on time , pmsing , cramps & had healthy babies ) but doctors claim it’s impossible when nothing is impossible same way you can get pregnant while already pregnant 😮‍💨 Just a whole bunch of opinions 🤷🏾‍♀️ No one can ever truly define the female body because every female has a different body 💖

My now 13-year-old son is the product of a failed tubal ligation. I had my first child (son) in Oct. 2000 at the age of 18. I then had my second child (daughter) in Jan. 2005 (about 5½ months before I turned 23), at which point I had a tubal ligation. My daughter was born vaginally, but I had to deliver her in the OR since I was going to be having the surgery immediately after and would have to be cut on. So, my OB/GYN did my surgery laparoscopically, tying my tubes off, cutting small pieces from each one and then burning the ends. Everything went well. I only stayed 2½ days in the hospital. Brought my baby home, and I thought that was it. Fast forward to 2½ years later, in Aug. 2007 I was going into my second month of missed period and I don't really remember exactly why I decided to take a pregnancy test, but I did and it came up positive. I remember I was slightly in denial when I saw it, but was also scared to death that it was ectopic (heard too many horror stories about those) so I called my OB/GYN and was like, "WTF?! How can this test be positive? Could this be ectopic? Do I need to get to the hospital like right now?" So she has me go into the office, do blood work, which also comes back positive and then sends me for a vaginal ultrasound. I was a nervous frickin' wreck the entire time. Once I got back to her office after the ultrasound she was like, "Welp, you're definitely pregnant and it's not ectopic. Due date is April 1st." (go figure the due date would be April Fool's Day 🤣) Fast forward again to the end of March 2008 and my son was born healthy, 7lbs. 3oz. Crazy thing about the whole thing is that my OB/GYN told me that BOTH tubes had grown back, not just one, and that if she hadn't performed my surgery herself she wouldn't have believed I had even had it done because they grew back so well. BUT... to top all that off, the even crazier part is the fact that I've also had Endometriosis and PCOS (diagnosed through laparoscopy almost 20 years ago), which supposedly makes it super difficult to get pregnant (well, apparently not for me 😆). Anyway, after this last pregnancy my OB/GYN suggested that we wait until 6 weeks after delivery and then do another surgery to just remove my tubes, to ensure it wouldn't fail again. So... that's what we did and now all I have left are little nubs. As for my son, he will be 14 this coming March 2022 (my other two are 21 and almost 17).

I guess it was because they were already doing the C-section at the time, so the tube tying would easier to do then? If she were my wife, I would just go get a vasectomy ontop of the tube tying since, 1: my wife has just undergone surgery and I might as well do my part, and 2: it just makes for less of a chance.

At 25 y.o., my mom gave birth to her 4th child (my younger sister Tiffany). After completing her C-section, she had her tubes tied, as she was a single mother to 3 children (my 2nd oldest brother had, unfortunately, passed away of S.I.D.S. at, I believe, 6 mo. old) 11 yrs. later (I was 15 y.o.), she got remarried & 6 mo. later I am being told that she is pregnant 🤔. After making some inquiries, she found out that her tubes had actually NOT been tied after my sisters birth. But since every man she had been in relationships with over the intervening decade had also had vasectomies, she never knew. But my new step-father did not. Therefore, after thinking "only 7 more years before all of my children are legally adults", she was suddenly starting all over from the very beginning. My sister/daughter was born just before I turned 16. Since I was an introvert who only really left the house to go to school and/or my gymnastics practices, I spent a lot of time helping take care of her in order for my mom to be able to keep up with her other responsibilities. In fact, when she was learning to speak, she called me "Mommy Katy. Even now, 24 yrs. later, I'm still "Mommy Katy", and I still absolutely love 💕 the name. My mom & I both agree that I always have, & always will be, her 2nd mother.
