I 1000% agree that Dave Filoni should be "the guy". I actually went to the same college as Dave and I will NEVER forget when he came back and talked to us about meeting George and getting his job. He was George's PADAWAN! The man should be given his chance, especially when you consider that the way George made Clone Wars was a cinematic process. He set it all up and "filmed" it like it was a film. That's because George's training was in film. I don't even really hate Kathleen Kenedy, but I think the majority of the fans want Filoni to be in charge. Thanks for being a great show and being honest about your love of Star Wars!!!!

Okay, so as someone who both LOVES The Last Jedi and left the theater with weird feelings the first time, I can tell you that I also tend to focus on the things I didn't like about the movie when I'm in a conversation. I think that's just where it flows most of the time. Maybe it's becaues, no matter how much you liked it, you have to admit where the fanbase is at. I'm not blind to it. I think everyone at Collider is pretty authentic and fair. They also try to be professional. Just my opinion.

Obi-Wan standalone will happen, but Lucasfilm won't announce it until they've nailed down the script and director. After Trank's personal meltdown and Lord & Miller's firing, they'll be extra careful in making sure they have the right filmmakers on board. Why jump the gun like the DCEU or Universal's Dark Universe?

Also why not wait til they get a good feel for how these spinoff Stories go over? See how the audience feels about Solo. These spinoffs are mainly around for the diehard fans anyways, not to bring in new ones, so no point in getting people too hyped for that branch of the new era. The real future is in the Johnson and D&D trilogies.
@VperVendetta1992

But then why did Kennedy announce a whole trilogy by Rian Johnson and a set of movies by D&D? You'd think she would have announced Obi-Wan first.

Harloff is dead on with what is going on at Lucasfilm and KK. Couldn’t have said it better myself. My guess is Filoni is not in charge cause the bigwigs, meaning those in charge of the movie side, don’t like Lucas interpretation of Star Wars and Filoni is the continuation of that interpretation.

I totally agree with Kristian on Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy. Rebels reminds me every time why I love Star Wars. The films don`t. I just don`t care the same way about the characters in the films than I do in canon and tv shows. I might be one of the few people who has this opinion, but every single female character in Rebels are better than Rey. I don`t care about her at all. Ahsoka for example is a way more interesting character. The films so far have been mediocre at best, while Filoni has nailed it. That`s my opinion, tho.
@MiMi_MoMo
@MiMi_MoMo 6 жыл бұрын
Revan I completely agree. As a woman, I honestly hate Rey. She is so uninteresting and boring, not to mention flawless (a flawless character is terrible writing). But Ahsoka, Hera and Sabine on the other hand are extremely unique and interesting in their own ways. They all have flaws and feel “human”. Filoni is just a master at storytelling and he needs to get more credit for it.
@NARUTO1997ification
@NARUTO1997ification 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! Thank you! Glad someone agrees with me. I have been saying for a long time that Rey has no flaws, and she is the main character. That is a problem. As you say Filoni knows how to create characters that are interesting and compelling. That`s why Rebels is so great.
@Within_Cells_Interlinked
@Within_Cells_Interlinked 6 жыл бұрын
Revan Yeah, I definitely agree. I’m wondering more and more what Filoni would’ve been able to do with Rey’s character specifically, especially in TLJ. I know Ahsoka has had more time to develop, but she’s one of my favorites. If they could’ve done even a fraction for Rey’s character that they did for Ahsoka’s, I would’ve been more than satisfied with Rey instead of feeling disappointed.

The 2 are completely different because you have had countless hours with the clone wars character and the rebels character compared to Rey's 4 hours in movies, so of course you are more invested in those because they had alot of times to be fleshed out

I’m glad you guys are coming out and criticizing Lucasfilm now. I unsubscribed a while back because you guys were just so happy and positive. I think there should be a balance. You shouldn’t be overly negative about Lucasfilm (they are doing some great stuff) but I don’t think being overly positive is the right answer either. If we criticize things with a level head, they will be more willing to listen to us fans. So I say, speak your minds and tell us what you really feel in a positive and level headed way.

Sean Paul Al Saedi I’m not talking about the actual content of the films, because yes of course that is subjective. I mean the management of Lucasfilm as a company. There are facts everywhere that Kathleen Kennedy isn’t doing a great job at connecting the cannon together. That’s why I agree with Harloff that KK should make executive decisions and Filoni should be in charge of the creative ones.

I don't think TLJ was as bad as some said, but it was definitely a misfire on various fronts. Completely agree with Harloff about Kennedy's place within the SW films. SW needs a Kevin Feige at the head of creativity, not Kennedy who just talks in soundbites and generic platitudes. Filoni is literally Lucas' student, a man that lives and breathes Star Wars. She had her chance and has blown it, move along and let a real creative take over.

I wonder how much of Disney executives saw Dave Filoni as a stand-in “George Lucas”. Disney wanted to initially distance themselves from Lucas at first (ie canceling Clone Wars, not taking Lucas’s scripts/story arcs for the sequel trilogy). I think Dave Filoni initially was acting as “continuing Lucas’s vision” while Disney executives wanted to reboot a franchise. For example, I can see Dave saying “George never wanted for this to happen in his movies”, and Disney executives having a problem with this mindset. For this reason Dave continues to “play” in animation and not given the major creative control because Disney fears another Prequel trilogy product. Simply put “Dave has too much George in him” (similar to Kyle having too much Vader in him).

I am 100% in agreement about Dave Filoni. His knowledge and apparent love of Star Wars is more than evident. Nothing against Kathleen Kennedy but the lack of a comprehensive plan in the movies is doing a huge disservice to the fans and the stories.

Also regarding Luke having a prominent role in Episode IX as a force ghost. let's keep in mind that how Luke died was different than we've seen. At the height of his powers after a powerful exhibition of Force-powers he just fades away becoming one with the Force. Yeah, Yoda similarly faded away; but alot of that was extreme age. Luke was old, but still very strong. I think there's a case to be made that he could make significant impacts on the real world in episode IX. remember, he did tell his nephew, "see you around kid"

I agree with Kristian on "putting Filoni in the chair." Kennedy's involvement has been a bit controversial at times, but the problems dont hamper the production, but creatively, something's not quite working in Lucasfilm when your choices for directors is like a revolving door with Trevorrow and Lord and Miller and Ron Howard and JJ Abrams and clashes and all this other stuff. It doesnt make me worry about the production or whther or not the movies will be released .... but it's a little disconcerting that she's not front and center for a lot of stuff. Give Filoni a chance, Kennedy. Please?
@shanecanavan8132
@shanecanavan8132 6 жыл бұрын
Yea give him a chance, but I think its jumping the gun to just throw him into head of creative. I agree the directors & KK should be on the same page b4 they're hired but all their films are critically and financially successful, their animated show is very popular and most of their books have been well received. The content is good, I think that's what's important.

Within the Disney hierarchy Kathleen Kennedy and Kevin Feige, as the heads of their respective subsidiary studios, both report to the same boss; Alan Horn. She's not "higher up" than he is. Not since Marvel Studios was shuffled out of Marvel Entertainment and Feige no longer had to report to Ike Perlmutter. The key difference between them, which the Council does seem to recognize, is that Feige is a dyed in the wool fan of the franchise he's overseeing and bringing to the big screen. Kennedy's appreciation of Star Wars seems to skim more along it's surface and not run nearly as deep. And she seems to get much more excited about the things she can accomplish by utilizing the franchise than she does about the particulars of the franchise itself.

I think this is all a little overblown. There's one divisive movie amongst the hard-core SW fans & its like its star wars darkest hour. I mean is this going to happen every time a SW movie isn't mostly universally liked? I get the whole point about extended canon fans wanting to be rewarded more, I don't read the books (I do watch rebels) but I can see that as a fair criticism. I don't think its that big an issue though. I do think they need to make sure their on the same page with directors early on. All 3 movies have been financially & critically successful, their animated show rebels is very popular, from what I've seen on videos like this most books have been good. One movie has divisiveness amongst the hard-core fans & it panic time. Yea there's problems but I think things are being blown out of proportion & ppl are reading to much into things. I say relax

Thank you for your passion Kristian, you are speaking the truth that so many of us feel. Even if you love TLJ, you can't objectively deny that the overall narrative is a bit of a mess. Whether its Luke's arc, the growth of the new trio of characters, the connection to TFA, the questions going into EP 9 - it's very clear there is no overall story, just random things being thrown together. Which is a damn shame because Star Wars is THE one and only franchise where you can create this amazing overall story through multiple mediums.

Kristian you are on-point with what you are saying about Kennedy. Don’t let these fans who are eternally optimistic make you feel like you are alone or anything. I don’t mind if someone likes what I don’t like. I wish I loved The Last Jedi; I REALLY wanted to. But I have talked to many people who are just optimistic people who are not thinking for themselves. I don’t mind people who do like or don’t like certain things as long as it is genuine. I have an issue for people who will defend whatever decisions are made by default and are in denial. Just because I and others don’t like something and have negative feelings does not make it wrong. Negative is not bad, positive is not good. Anyone’s feelings are fine as long as they are real

Council, as always you deliver a great show and commentary on the flow of Star Wars. My thoughts: I won't lose sleep if we do not get a live action Obi-Wan film or any other based on a single character. We are required to keep rewinding to prequelesque time, which I thought everyone was burnt out on even before Revenge of the Sith was released. Anything post ROTJ is as far as I would go to shed more light on what brought us to the state of the galaxy in TFA and beyond. So far the novels and various comic series have done a fantastic job. Well crafted focus tying everything together. Talent and resources would be better suited bringing any live action film or series in this timeline to fill in the gaps as we progress into another trilogy once the Skywalker era ends.

I also agree that they need to connect the books/animated series/movies better then they have. There is SO much material in their to connect, and it would make Star Wars soooo much better then it already is, and where it is today with this divide, I think it would help mend that issue. That was a great convo/ episode overall!

The underlying theme is Rian Johnson screwed up and Kennedy has no game plan. That is why people are so split and felling meh. The Last Jedi was terrible as a star wars movie. I am still stunned Perri and Ken still like the movie as much as they say they do.

I can't see how they can feel like Holdo was misrepresented onscreen (a character from a novel 90% of audience members will never have read) and not get just how badly Luke was misrepresented as a character in TLJ. We had 3 very popular films establishing the character of Luke Skywalker. A supposed "good" character in a film cocks a loaded gun in the bedroom of his sleeping nephew (the equivalent of igniting a lightsaber), the son of his best friend and his twin sister who they trusted to train him with the intent to kill him. I get what they were trying to do in TLJ, but it was just COMPLETELY mishandled from a storytelling perspective and was IMO terrible writing and completely out of character. So many better ways to handle that scene and not make Luke look so heartless and incompetent.

Kenobi being on hold might be a good thing! Lucasfilm by now knows more than any franchise if the script/story they have isn't great doing Obi Wan justice. Don't even make it. In regards to Kenobi I remember seeing ROTS during the midnight viewing. It was sold out & at the end Kenobi gives baby Luke to His Uncle & Aunt. Those feels, the music, the twin suns, & Kenobi looking on then walking away, had everybody in tears. Even the SW Rebels episode "Twin Suns" Kristian mentions, was amazing. There's so much potential for the Kenobi movie so they have to make it and make sure its amazing.

Another great episode. I love your conversations and listening to your points of view. I respect all your opinions and usually I agree with them. I agree that Dave Filoni needs to be utilized more than just animation. He has a creative genius that needs to be used more. The last 4 episodes of Rebels have been outstanding. Some of the best of the entire series. That is saying something. During these dark times of Star Wars fandom, these episodes are absolutely just what we need. They have done so much in the last couple weeks. For me they have reignited the flame that is my love of Star Wars. Just so amazing. I’m very excited for what’s coming. TLJ novelization, Rebels finale, and more. Looking forward to it all. Thanks for doing what you do guys, keep it up!

Harrison Ford was in Blade Runner 2049 at his age, for example. You don't need an action/physically demanding role, there are plenty of supporting/background roles a character like Lando can have in IX. Him taking command of the MF again now that Solo has passed on and going out in a blaze of glory would indeed be a possibility. I'm pretty sure he would have a bone to pick with the First Order.

What?! The Wilhelm scream was in this movie. It's been a while since I've seen it but if I'm not mistaken when Luke is fighting Kylo on Crait the scream is heard when he ducks under the lightsaber. Or during one of Kylo's other attacks at least. I'm sure of it because I remember thinking "And there it was :D"

Completely agree with Harloff, I feel like Kennedy is just the boss that cares about box office numbers which is fine, but many of us would like some more creative intertwined storylines like what filoni has done. Hopefully more on an emphasis on cannon material through novels and tv and movies. Haven't really ever heard Kennedy come up with any " creative ideas " herself, mainly stories of her not agreeing with directors b/c she didn't like their storyline (trevarrow,etc) Filoni creating these storylines and working with rian johnson and other directors would be fantastic

This episode was on-point. As a salty Army vet. There is something called; one person needs to trust their team and delegate authority and responsibility. She, ala Kennedy, sn't the "creative force" in practice but in name only, and that does suck. But she should remain the head of Lucasfilm from a production stand-point. You all hit on such a well discussed argument here and I truly hope they are listening up at the Lucasfilm brass. Filoni shoukd be acknowledged and brought to the forefront of would only strengthen Star Wars.

You know, seeing the artwork animated in Wolves in a Door triggered some deep memories for me, and it took me until right now to finally place it. Dot and the Kangaroo - an Australian kids movie from 1977, that I must have seen a number of times when I was little - had a segment about "the Bunyip," that was presented as animated cave drawings - and it freaked me out when I was a kid. It's amazing how things like that are completely forgotten, and can somehow come back from nowhere 40-some years later.

I don't usually comment on anything, anywhere, but, Kristian, I 100% agree with you, and have since the beginning. It's like Kathleen Kennedy is a head chef making the ultimate banquet and she has access to her sous chef, Filoni, who was Julia Child's protege, and he has made dishes that her guests absolutely love and keep coming back for more, yet she invites other outside chefs to cook instead. Let's see a live-action fan feast prepared by Dave Filoni.

I find it weird that people (looking at you, Kristian) say George is a bad writer but one of the best storytellers of all time. Why? Because the TELLERS part. That's the writing piece. Honestly, George comes up with fantastic stories and ideas, some of the best, but he's actually bad at the telling part, which is why his pure vision has been best filtered through others who know how to tell, compellingly, his amazing ideas. This is not a knock on him (any more than what Kristian said anyway), but just want to make the point that his struggle is in the execution of his storytelling -- and that's the "telling" part.

Completely agree with Kristian. I’ve seen Kennedy receive a lot of unwarranted abuse about how she’s running Licasfilm. She seems to be very good as the studio head but something has to be done about making the universe feel connected. Kevin Feige and the other folks over at Marvel have been able to make movies that casual fans love but also provide the more serious fans with what they want most of the time. I acknowledge that Marvel are just dealing with films, whilst Lucasfilm is all types of media, but if you look at the talent they’ve got on board, especially with the story group, I can see that approach being much more rewarding for everyone. Marvel are even releasing 3 films a year now and have been nailing it. With someone like Filoni or the story group in charge of the creative vision, with only one movie a year, there would be plenty of time to create a developing and all encompassing narrative for the universe.

Harloff saying "nothing has changed about his love for Star Wars," has NOTHING to do with why many people are correctly underscoring the flip-flopping or positive to negative change of mindset or perspective. What they were meaning was ostensibly how Harloff was overly positive and defended the movie with remarks about "Fan-boy expectations," etc., and now, he has a more focused view in which he now realizes that they were many mistakes made with RJ and KK at the Helm, per se; and that is what overwhelming majority of fans who saw the movie illuminated; e.g., the COMPLETE disregard, dismissal, and discounting of the previous 7 or 8 films (if one includes Rogue One and should) regarding story-line, continuity, and most imperatively Character. i.e., Luke Skywalker, which is what the entire series is about (the bloodline and it's connection to the Force).
