One suggestion if you still need to edit your clips: Right click the clip you’re going to mask and select ‘create compound clip.’ Right click that clip and select ‘open in timeline.’ Do the masking on that clip. When you go back to your main timeline, the compound clip will be able to be edited without having to retrack it every time you edit the clip.

I did what you said and the clip still disappears as soon as I try to do anything to it. Resize, reposition, etc. Not just the tracking. The entire clip disappears even though its still there in the timeline. Extremely frustrating!!!

Hey Jason, Thanks for the tutorial. This feature is really powerful. I can see how this works well for any object that you want to color grade in some manner - purple birds, cows etc. Can it be also used for tracking purposes - say centering the masked object in the video? Similar to your last clip I have a person who is obscured at times by other people and objects and the camera is moving all over the place. I want to keep the masked person in the center of the video (as can be done using the other tracker tools. I can't figure out how to apply the output of the magic mask to do the centering. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - might be another great how to video! in theory it ought to be very effective.

Your tutorial saved me having to do a complete reshoot on a simple outro. I knew when I filmed the outro that the lighting wasn't the best. On camera it looked ok. In Resolve, it was too dark. Magic Mask did the trick. Highlighted myself and let Magic Mask do its thing. Added some color correcting, poof just like that outro looks acceptable. This beats driving two hours to reshoot a 12 second outro.

Hi Jason, what's the best way to completely remove a background and replace it with a solid background? I tried a few tools but it looked obvious due to things like the weird glued-together fingers look, and hints of the moved background when I moved.

I'd try using the magic mask first and see how that works. If you aren't able to get good results, you might have to do it by old school rotoscoping and moving it frame by frame. Usually the magic mask works good, but it depends on your background too. If it's busy, it might have trouble.

I was laughing out loud when you said around @8:00 that made it look good, in my mind it made it look fake what I thought was amazing. It looked like the penguin was edited in. I have yet to edit my first video but this video of yours makes me want to buy the studio version, I'm not gonna do that because I don't know if I will regularly edit videos but if this is going to be a hobby of mine I will definitely buy it. Still as a introvert down to earth Dutchman it's hard to deal with the high energy jersey aditute, but don't change it for me. You are amazing and dealing with that is my problem. Couldn't use this guide as the object was my mouse cursor and it was too small. Anytime I did get the mouse cursor the smart mask would select hair strands and other parts of the photo. Reducing range didn't work either.

It does work pretty well but if the background is similar color and has similar brightness/contrast it does have a hard time tracking. Any suggestion to help in these cases?

You can always throw on a new node with a power window and try and darken everything around it just a little bit in a very rough fashion, then tried using the object mask. Basically you’re just helping eliminate things a little bit.

Ill usually add a node before the tracked node. Drop saturation, boost contrast and adjust gamma until the similar colors are more clearly different. Track then remove the adjustment node.

Hi. At home, my magic mask doesn't work as well like you. I tried to get my monitoring in 4k instead of 1080, tried to work on dlog , but my object mask render are not good at all. I don't know why.

Without seeing it, not really sure what might be going on there. Some objects are harder to track than other objects.

I'm having a major issue. I'm trying to mask out the background of a still image so that the subject can move across the screen. The magic mask only seems to work for the first frame. When I click the track forward button, I do not get a blue line and green check mark. After that first frame, the whole image disappears.

I got much better results working on this feature with “faux bokeh” on my old 4K wedding videos using my M1 Pro MacBook: increase the resolution by 8K, add just a touch of sharpen, depending on the scene then apply the mask. Then add your subtle (not too much to make it look artificial) lens blur. When you export to 4K, the results are way better now including improvements on dress and hair. But this method falls way short when it comes to translucent subjects but it VERY convincing if you are conservative on your level of blur- just enough to have a noticeable effect to add drama to both the scene and foreground subjects. I know, it’s an extra step but not really much when working with Apple Silicon systems =)

It is pretty slow. I was using 5 second clips and it took around a minute. I’ve only got the M1 Mac mini, maybe the new ones would tear through it quicker.

On my system it's nearly realtime in "better" mode, which goes to show how well it's using hardware (I have an nVidia 3080 GPU). I wish this were available in Fusion. It would be a HUGE benefit to have it on a Fusion node.

One thing you ABSOLUTELY have to know is if you’re running this on a system with limited amounts of RAM and you have CleanMyMacX running and a notification pops up to clear your RAM FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT CLEAR YOUR RAM. I had something tracked over 1000+ frames that was broken up over a 40 minute timeline and I cleared my RAM. It took another painstaking half hour just to retrack it ALL over again 😡

Going to hit those davinci online books as well. I made the switch from premiere to davinci studio two years ago and never looked back. Premiere is expensive and crashes because it doesn’t use your computers hardware intelligently. Buggy and slow while using higher resolution media. Thanks again for your vids. Ps. Would recommend all new starters to go through the official training as well because even though their videos lack content regarding techniques their basic training to understand how to use the application is brilliant and even some good video editing disciplines are explained.

Is this guy on speed or has the video playback speed been increased? Surely nobody actually speaks that fast? My brain doesn't compute it when it's gabbled out at such rapid pace with virtually no pauses - and I have a pretty good brain! Not being an American speaker myself also means that I have to "translate" from the American accent to Australian as well as trying to comprehend what he's actually saying. Slow it down, relax, put some brain-breathing pauses in there. And drink less coffee!

I'm a University lecturer so I do know a bit about presentation and communication, and if I stood out the front of my class of 550 students and delivered at that speed with very few pauses, I'd be lynched!
