The ICAC’s latest video, Obligations of public office, explains the privilege and responsibilities of being a public officeholder.
Simply put, holding public office can involve:
• deciding how to spend taxpayer funds or use public assets
• exercising public powers that derive from legislation
• acting on behalf of a government agency
• setting or giving advice about public policy
• providing essential services
• applying coercive powers, such as those of the police and court officials.
Public office holders operate with a high degree of entrusted power. The video explains:
• their responsibilities to elevate the public interest above other considerations - especially personal interests
• consequences of breaching these responsibilities.
