The Churchill AVRE Petard is the current event tank in War Thunder. This monster is clad in 90mm of armor all round and sits at a BR of 2.7! The armor alone makes it formidable but housed in the turret is a giant mortar launcher that shoots 230mm projectiles with 18kg of explosives.
The problem is, the gun has a range of around 100m and the projectile is VERY slow. Useless at long range engagements and even some short ones but when you're point blank, nothing is going to survive a hit from the Petard.
I genuinely thought I would struggle with this thing but it turned out to be pretty decent! :) I did get lucky with the maps, though.

You know, it's a funny thing that I've noticed in various games. When you've got a big, tough and slow unit, you don't expect it to catch up to you. But if it just doesn't care too much about cover, or stopping to increase accuracy, it's going to cross the field faster then you might expect. Noticed this first in Battletech actually. My force was trying to chase down the enemy, and with all of the direction changes to take cover and try to take out my lighter units, the OpFor was slowed down enough my Assaults were keeping them in good range by booking it across the field.

I am new to GRB. I was in a Panzer IV and saw in the kill feed this crazy Churchill getting kills. I was distracted by shooting another tank at long range when I heard a tank close by, I zoomed out to witness this thing maybe 75 meters away in front of me! It launched what I could only describe as a giant metal beach ball over my head and I shot his lower plate and got him. It was hilarious how slow that bomb really is.

I think the best thing about that was when he said it, his bomb could have actually arced over the dead tank his target was keeping behind. Didn't end up being nessesary, but I checked the shot and it looks like the Petard can just render tank-high cover usesless.

A Churchill AVRE with petard mortar did manage to get a kill on a Panther. The charge land 3ft away. It didn't blow a hole in the Panther, but it totally disabled it and the crew inside.

Please. One of the easiest Churchills to take out. It has 2 very obvious weak spots. 1 of which is it can be ammo racked from hitting the ammo in barrel. 2nd thing, it can be easily outflanked by faster tanks and sides are not that great on that particular tank. That is a meme tank and completely not worth the grind. Especially not for 35.000 points per task.... :/

@@info0 you have to remember, this is a low tier tank. the people playing these br do not have hundrets or thousands of hours in the game yet. Obvious weak spots for the long term player, but not the fresh players. This thing is gonna drive people to uninstall the game. This is just a low tier maus. Balancing this thing will be an impossible task because it is somehow great and insanely aweful at the same time.

@@Max-hn5fs well, I was new player and I know one thing, low tiers are seal clubbing grounds for vets. I was there, now I joined the fray myself. This Churchill is meh. Stuarts can easily take it out. Shoot machine gun port and you have a chance of killing 90% of crew. Shoot ammo in barrel is 100% ammo explosion. It's not as viable as people think it is. It's why I have not grinded it as it was not worth it in my opinion. I might buy it of marketplace at some point as I don't think it will go for much more than 10$

In a similar vein, an old pal of mine was in the Royal Engineers, and served with the Centurion AVRE (the Churchills replacement). Said they were getting laughed at by some Tank regiment guys when they were at a tank firing range one day not long before the first Gulf War. That is till they fired at an old tank as a target, and you could visually see the large HESH shell flying thru the air towards the target. He said all laughing stopped when the target tank basically exploded into it's constituant parts, and there was basically nothing left of it.

You should play the VEAK 40. It lost it's proxy fuze shells but got moved down in BR tto 7.7, where it now commonly faces prop planes and early jets. It is still very effective being a radar SPAA at such a low BR, and folding planes in half with 40mm is very satisfying.

The armoured regiment I served in when stationed in Germany ( 32 Armoured Engineer ) had an AVRE Centurion ( Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineer ) fitted with a 165mm main gun up on a plinth as a gate guard. This vehicle had been produced in the 1950s and been brought back out of retirement and refurbished to be used in the first Gulf War as the Royal Engineers no longer had any vehicle in service that was fitted with a demolition gun for taking out bunkers. Dustbin launcher was the nickname for the gun, as when it fired, the round was so big and slow, you could actually watch it arcing through the air.

the absolute max range you can get out of it is around 200m, but you have to angle your hull up and the bomb will self detonate when it goes over 200m

AVRE is a great showcase of how shitty many of the maps are, where they *force* all tanks to blast away at 20m or less down a single corridor - winrate on those maps for this thing must be 80%+. Probably the best thing to come out of this tank being released.

This is how heavy tanks should play, Gaijin should really consider moving some of the BR's down for some heavy tanks and maybe increasing SP requirements to spawn them in as a counter balance. A lot of heavy tanks are at BR's where their armor doesn't really matter as much but at 2.7 this thing is a monster

Dear lord that second game where 5 AVRE's slowly crawled into the enemy spawn. Imagine the pure terror knowing there was nothing you could do against it.
