Wow, they made it an entire 48 seconds before telling us how hard it is to make reeds. World record!

I guess that's why they're so wicked expensive! They also only come one at a time, so if you mess up ONCE, it's about $20 down the drain. Although I have just seen an ad by Légère, who makes my clarinet reed, selling a plastic oboe reed at $190.36, so it's worth about ten wooden reeds.

Famous anecdocte: At a rehearsal, Sir Thomas Beecham once asked the oboist to give an "A" so the orchestra could tune up. This particular oboist had a very wide vibrato. Beecham looked around at the orchestra and said, "Take your pick."
@ChucksterJax
@ChucksterJax 5 жыл бұрын
I see a lot of comments about how red the oboist's face turns red. I think it's just this oboist style. It doesn't take a lot of air blown into the instrument to make a sound. The tube the reeds are strapped to is about the diameter of a knitting needle. So it's more like you're holding your breath when you play it.

I can confess that for some inexplicable reason now I'm obsessed with these two instruments althought I still love saxophone since I was a child. I believe that the great classiness, sweetness and tenderness of oboe's sound is incomparable (because clarinet sounds good BUT) and English horn is the perfect complement for oboe so I love them too much together. I need to listen an English horn version of the Ennio Morricone's masterpiece "Gabriel's Oboe". Thanks for sharing and greetings from Spain!!! 🌸🌸🌸💐💐💐🌸🌸🌸

The name of the English horn actually comes from a mispronounciation in French. The French often pronounce Anglais like "anglé". There is an angle in the tube where the player blows. The instrument was not invented in England, but in Italy, like many classical instruments. Also, it is not technically a horn because it doesn't have a mouthpiece, but a wooden reed.

If the EH is pitched a fifth lower than the oboe, would a composer have to notate the fingered notes a 5th higher to get the sounded not he/she wants? In a music program you have to write it the way you want it to sound. Would it have to be re-written for a concert score to compensate. Thanks.
