Little tip I like to do. Before starting, with clean hands, put masking tape over brake shoe. After assembly, remove tape. This prevents dirty hands from contaminating the brake surface.

This is really one of the better videos on how to do the drum brakes of an F350/250. For the shoe retaining springs I made a special tool from a old large wide flat blade screwdriver. I used a side grinder grind a notch just wide enough in the blade end so the spring wire can fit in the slot. Like the slot width, make the slot just deep enough to completely capture the diameter of the springs wire size. Finished product will look something like a 2 pronged fork and slip over the springs wire thickness easily. Use this tool to push straight in on the retaining spring end next to the spring keeper/hook. This will rotate the spring end towards the backing plate enough the unhook the spring from the spring hook. The hook will come right off the retaining spring end with little effort, and the tool won't slip off the spring. No pliers, prying or struggle to unhook the springs and no busted knuckles. To put the new retaining springs on the new hooks it is basically the reverse of the uninstall of the shoe retainer springs. I first install the spring in the correct shoe hole, install the hooks, place the shoe on the top pin and align the wheel cylinder pusher with the shoe, and hold the shoe in the correct position and alignment on the backing plate. T then use the spring tool to put some pressure straight in on the retaining spring end near where the spring hook will go. This bit of pressure will hold the shoe in place. With the other hand and a pair of needle nose pliers hold the spring hook near the spring end, press in on the spring tool to rotate the spring end towards the backing plate enough to to hook the retaining spring on the spring hook end. Once you get the hang of using the spring tool it is very easy and quick to pop the shoe retaining springs off and on. It literately takes longer to write out the process than to do it. When putting things back together, I usually start with replacing the wheel cylinder and setting it up to gravity bleed while I do the rest of the side I'm working on. Keep an eye on the master cylinder and top off fluid as needed. Then I replace the brake adjuster cable/parking brake assembly after putting a new adjuster cable on, lubricate the back plate pad areas and the horseshoe for the adjuster cable, then hang both shoes in place using the shoe spring retainers. Now that the shoes are hung. I install the lower spring from shoe to shoe, then I install the upper spring shoe to shoe. I then install the brake adjuster cable end on the adjuster making sure I route the adjuster cable over the horseshoe and route the end behind the shoe retaining spring and in front of the lower long spring and behind the adjuster. Lift the adjuster up enough to hook the adjuster spring on the adjuster in the proper place. Last I install the brake adjuster mechanism in the proper orientation in the space between the bottom of the two shoes. Putting the adjuster mechanism in last makes it easier to put the springs in and it is not difficult to put it in if it is turned all the way in. Install the parking brake cable on the parking brake lever. Now adjust the brake shoes to the brake drum by lifting up/out on the adjuster and rotate the adjuster star wheel to extend the brake shoes just enough to allow the drum to just freely rotate without any real drag on the drum. It may take a couple tries to get how much to turn the star wheel. Clean the pads and drum surfaces if necessary install the drum for the final time tighten the bleeder screw and done.

Thanks! I had a drum rusted to the shoes on my F250. The star wheel was stripped, so I couldn't loosen the shoes. The shoe retaining pins are hard, so I had to buy a carbide bit to drill them out from the back. I wound up using expansion pipe clamps against the frame to get the drum off far enough to reach in with a hacksaw blade and cut the adjuster. I appreciate the clue about the nut in the back to get the big pin at the top out! The screwdriver mod is great to know too! You had me stumped until you went back and put the spring in the bottom! When you put new shoes on, the pistons get pushed back farther into the cylinder. If water collected in the low point of the brake system, it can rust the bottom of the cylinder. When the pistons get pushed in over the rusted spot, they can leak. It's a good idea to check the cylinders. They're easy to hone if there's rust. The hone has three spring-loaded stones, and fits in a drill.

i took a old #3 phillips screw driver and cut off the tip took cutoff wheel cut a slot in it and then heated the end and bent to 90 degrees and takes those side springs off so easy
@phildegruy9295Ай бұрын
Couple things that may help prevent early failure. On the completed assembly shown at about 18:55 in the video, the lower spring is in the wrong hole on the front shoe. The lower long spring goes in the next hole up on the front shoe so it is in the same hole on the front shoe as the rear shoe. This puts the spring straight across and it won't rub on anything like the adjuster wheel and break and gives the proper tension to the lower shoe assemblies against the adjuster. The brake adjuster cable end is also wrong.The brake adjuster cables silver metal clip should go behind the adjuster bracket and the hook of the spring faces out towards you so everything lines up correctly.

My brake kit included all parts! Its been years since doing drum brakes, so I took several pics and laid everything out during dis- assembly. Reused the drums as there was literally no ridge. Read the description. I screwed up the one spring, which I mentioned in the description. What do you mean "everything is labeled?". When you buy shoes and hardware, it's not labeled. And guess what? I know I screwed up, I'm not an expert on everything. Guess what? The spring still holds the shoes together so the adjuster is retained. Thousands of miles after this video was made, I changed a rusted E-brake cable on that side. Spoiler alert, the brakes were all still there and wearing evenly, even with the spring in the wrong hole.
