Hi Stefan, I like your videos very much. Your information’s are priceless (your channel is like a library), but it is not just information’s each video have a piece of your hart. You motivate me, you make me laugh (sometimes). I am from northern Greece, I have started an orchard 4 years before with 1/4 of acre and now it is 3/4 it is an experimental orchard, I have try to grow every fruit and nut tree that it can find. ( cherries, apricots, pears, pomegranates, peaches, plums, persimmons, apples, almonds, walnuts. the climate that I live is very strange Cfa, zone 7 with extremely hot summers sometimes 40+ Celsius and 500 mm/year(olives get damaged by frost hare and last year i had frost damage in the blooming of apricots). Also, I am ending my studies in agronomy. I have to say that learn more thinks from my orchard and from internet (from channels like yours) than from my university studies (but of course the university studies it was helpful) and now I am taking Geoffs online PDC.

Congratulations for getting such a great piece done while still in school. Looks like it will be a great example to see in a few years. We pass through Europe every year in November and early December to give courses. Maybe we could stop in Greece.

@@StefanSobkowiak Sorry for the late response, Yes it will be a great example in a few years. It will be an absolutely pleasure to have a course from you her in Greece. Also it would be awesome if you can give a talk in my university (I can get in touch with them). My e mail is nikolassh33@gmail.com, I will be more than happy to help in any way that I can if you came to Greece.

Very interesting! I learned that observation is the base to start permaculture. I thought I had to wait spring before I start observing my land, I was wrong! :)

Thank you for the information. I’ve seen the exact same thing on a few of my trees and couldn’t figure it out. I thought maybe it was rabbits or voles but never correlated the way the damage looked to pest damage.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. No one could tell us why our trees were cracking with bugs in them. One persone knew what would prevent it but not to stop it. He said wrap the trunk for support. It's sun scald. Wrapping soon and planting shrub in spring. We have one out of five or six that has not come close to death yet. My beloved D'Anjou pear tree. Best taste i ever had in a pear / fruit tree that we grew. Thank you so much. Maybe we can save the othere two trees as well.

Rite around the 2:28 mark of the video the trees damage actually looks like canker or fireblite. I never though how much the snows reflective ability had on the trees well being but, as you've explained the impact of the sun and snow combined makes complete sence.
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 5 жыл бұрын
Keith Ashline both are different. I should do a follow up to show what fireblight looks like, and canker although I have not seen canker on the trunk for years. Saw some on a branch yesterday.

About 4 years ago I noticed on my M7 Empire tree on its central leader a pretty bad sight which turned out to be canker. I decided I wasn’t going to let it destroy it so I cut out the infection and sprayed a solution of isopropyl alcohol at 70% mixture every day for around a week and the tree responded to this treatment and it healed itself. I’ve seen fireblite and took note of it but, it wasn't on my trees thankfully.

so does this also mean that sun scald cracks only happen on the west side of trees? [granted if the tree is wide enough to have "sides"] if this is true, it would turn out to be an interesting factoid.

Devon Henry I don't know where you are..but in WY in the winter when to sun is low in the horizon..shining on the trunks..and or reflecting off the snow..there would not be any live vegetation..like comfrey ..berries..so that is why I wondered what substantial bushes he would being using..as he has snow and cold like WY

Leslie Jacobs Agree, I'm in Cheyenne, WY. So I'm painting my trees white, as they're in my backyard and I only have about a dozen fruit trees. Then planting around them for summer heat to and one of his replys below said that the branches from the various bushes he plants helps with the sun scald, even though they are leafless.

Lawman212 we place a shrub 1.5-2 feet (50cm) from the base of the tree to the southwest. We try to have one or two shrubs in that position for each tree, even the nitrogen fixers.

Stefan, the shrub doesn't have leaves during late winter, either. How does the shrub protect the tree trunk during that time of year? Is it just the density of the shrub's limbs? Thanks.

Your example tree with the sun scalding looks to be around 10 years of age, does the age and size of the tree impact the suns damage? I have trees in my orchard between 2 to 4 years old.
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it affects younger trees more than older trees. Once bark is rough and scaly it helps protect from sun scald.

@@StefanSobkowiak So I should plant a bush that comes higher, like corylus cornuta?
@StefanSobkowiak

Maybe depends on the size of the tree and where you would get sunscald. Look at other trees in the area, you can usually see at what height it is affected. I would guess no more than 4' high.
