One of the greatest films ever made. As Bordwell notes, it was bold in both the story and also the style that the director developed which was very unconventional and very daring because of the attempt to tell the story through visual means. Antonioni had a directorial eye that was simply brilliant. Not just in composition but also in choreography and chairoscuro lighting. The last three minutes of this film are pretty much directorial perfection.

Have you seen any other Antonioni films? You might want to check out La Notte, or Red Desert if you haven't seen them. I love all of his work but these are some of my favourites. The composition of each frame is incredible in both, and Red Desert uses colour unlike any other film I've seen. They can feel slow, but if you're patient you just kind of sink into them...

Haven't seen any other of his films, but I'm not a fan of most of the Italian auteurs (Antonioni, Fellini, Rossellini)

Thank you for the interesting video - I did find the ending unsatisfactory in that we never found out what happened to Anna, even in an avant-garde genre it somewhat cheated the audience.

Rewatch recently after some years had me linking it to Bela Tarrr's Damnation one of the most sumptuous B/ W films . I prefer B/W these days .

The unexplained disappearance of Anna perhaps influenced the television series "My Three Sons", the oldest son, Mike marries, and is never heard from or mentioned again. Also Happy Days, and the sudden disappearance of, yet another, oldest son, Chuck.

But these days in the West there wouldn't even be the society of L'vventura for most . If Antonnioni was around today he would have to be even more minimalist than he was then so great is the boredom and futility it would be difficult to describe it with out the cliches . Who can ? Most master's have no legacy only wanna be imitators .

So it’s a bad film.. actually it’s one of my all time favorites. But can’t help think that Anna is conventionally the main character and Claudia and her lover are the side characters. So this movie is about side characters put on the main stage. They lack depth and strong purpose and will so they float and meander from one scene to the next

This film is stupefyingly boring.

I can understand that, because it had that on myself first viewing. Admittedly, I do need to revisit the film cause I enjoyed the main characters.

Boring waste of time. Another movie about rich peoples problems. No character development, masquerading as somehow mysterious and meaningful. Can be summed up thusly: Rich playboy with schizophrenic girlfriend takes up with her equally damaged best friend after she leaves him.
