Rebel was funny here as always, it only felt awkward because it's been so long since the last time she was on stage presenting awards and entertaining people through jokes. She was probably nervous as well. It's so sad that people keep using her new healthy self as a reason to why she's "not" funny anymore. She can be fit and be funny at the same time. Physical change doesn't change her entire personality unless it's her choice.

I love Rebel so much and it irks me that people are saying that this performance was awkward and the delivery was off, if you realized by now, rebel always had this delivery, and obviously she was portraying a character, for you guys, that went away with the weight honestly and from your pov this whole stigma around bigger people was the punchline. Which shows how much people really failed to listen to her, but made her weight the main joke. Picture her 2019 self doing this, or even better, go back to her old hosting and picture her 2022 self doing the same thing. Her presentation was funny, the crowd just forgot her character.

I don't disagree with you but you can't deny that the way someone looks impacts how their comedy is perceived. Not all jokes but many. i just watched one of her older award speeches and she absolutely plays into the awkward bumbling non-conventionally attractive person. You don't need to be fat to play this but you DO need to not be conventionally attractive. Think Zach galifinakis. He's not fat but he is no brad Pitt, and his look works well with his comedy. Comedy is an art which requires subtlety and nuance, and yeah unfortunately rebel's shtick doesn't really work for her when she's conventionally attractive. Why? Because she's pairing an awkward, mildly self deprecating delivery with an attractive appearance, and it just doesn't really match. She can still be funny, but I think she'd be more successful if she changed her act to be more congruent with how she looks. Is that unfair? Maybe? But it's something that all comedians have to do to some degree when they drastically change their appearance

@@wge621 I completely agree, like i said, the old look did play a big part of career, and that character is no more, so the jokes that would usually come with the old character make no sense, but she did keep up the gag in an effort to not label an appearance as what seems to be the butt of the joke, knowing as much as she seems to not care, it did probably bring or fuel a negative aspect towards certain group of people. Obviously, it didn't go quite well but she's good enough to bend the shtick to her appearance within society, even if it's a little demeaning.

Additionally it is very common for people who grow into themselves and become "conventionally attractive" as you say to retain their uniqueness because they don't have to be seen as either attractive or unattractive to do their thing - it's just happens to be a byproduct of their lifestyle at the moment. IMO it makes it even funnier. She looks great, she doesn't have to change her act just because other people now suddenly look at her differently. It's her act. People who don't get it don't have to watch her anymore and I hope she's fine with it, cause her humor is amazing and I'd like to see more of her regardless of her appearance. She’s reached the time old problem of female comedians which is if you’re a certain level of attractive the jokes are all much harder, and often impossible to pull off bc you’re now holding the best cards and the self deprecation comes off weird. Her awkward shtick doesn’t work any more. I don’t even know if it’s that the jokes are less weird, or that out of her mouth the way she looks now they don’t make sense. But the difference is almost entirely aesthetic - she’s a seasoned, highly experienced comedian. The change is in the way we perceive her

Just an interesting POV that never occurred to me as possible. Maybe that plays a part in how people see her differently or how she would need to re-tailor her material. I always loved Joan Rivers for her ability to really revel in her beauty (usually in the sarcastic, fake ego sort of way) when she was young, and still rock a theater with her fun, angry comedy.

this is a water down version of Rebel. Timing was off, audience was awkward, jokes were too clean and unfunny. A shame.

Exactly what I thought. The pause after a joke, and expecting laughter. That was cringe. But she's very confident in front of millions watching her, and enormous pressure of hosting. It's all about precision timing, delivery, and material. If anything goes off, even a little, then the performance doesn't work.
