It's a manpower and resource problem. I'm a deputy sheriff in a large metro county in Texas. During an 8 hour shift we can easily get several runaway and missing person calls on top of the assaults, thefts, robberies, vandalism, car accidents, etc. If there's a lead, like a boyfriend's/girlfriend's house or a license plate of the car they got in, we'll work it. Otherwise it's a report and entry in a state and nationwide database.

@@SEAZNDragonputting an APB or Amber Alert out shouldn’t be denied even if there’s a chance they’ve run away. How many times have we learned from parental units or frenemies who claimed the victim had left on their own accord, later discovering the “grieving loved one” was the murderer?! Place notice, take things seriously and file the paperwork. I understand resources are scarce, but, it’s a lot better to take a missing person case, file it and put notices out to the news/social media in a post/story that takes 5 minutes to alert the locals. It might not lead to needing groups of people to canvas an area, but, at least the person’s identity is out there and could maybe get help or people could offer info.

hello! resident of melbourne here. Melbourne is a massive city, population of about 5-6mil people. Instead of Melbourne being the city and lots of separate towns bordering it, we have heaps of suburbs surrounding the city and the further out or away you go from the city itself, the bigger the suburbs get and become more towns than suburbs. In this case, Mont Albert, Box Hill and Richmond are all really close to one another, Mont Albert to Richmond is a 20 minute drive with heaps of other suburbs in between. The jurisdiction isn't crossing state lines as its in the same state. Same city, just different suburbs, so same laws across the board. Whereas, if she was reported as a missing person in Victoria and was found in New South Wales for example there may be different laws! I hope this clears up any confusion :)
@SEAZNDragon9 ай бұрын
I wondering about that. Melbourne sounds like my hometown Houston, Texas; similar set up: large city with suburbs the size of small cites. Kevin seems to think Boxhill has its own police department but from what I read local law enforcement is at the state level and Boxhill was just a sub-unit of the state police. The station was still unprofessional but its likely they really did had to go through a lot of missing person cases.

I had a great-aunt who got into an argument with her son one morning. He stormed out of the house, drove off, and got into a fatal accident. She never remembered what the argument was about, or what their last words to each other were, but she was haunted for the rest of her life by the fact that it was something horrible said in a moment of rage that they never had a chance to get past. My mother and I hardly had the best relationship, but because of what happened to her aunt and cousin, she would always say “I love you” before leaving for work, no matter how bad of a morning we may have been having.

I always tell my mum I love her before I leave the house, and my girlfriend whenever one of us goes to bed (currently long distance,) because of the old episode of the Simpsons where Maude Flanders dies and Homer tells Marge he's never going to let her leave the room without telling her he loves her (ignoring how he completely abandons this idea within seconds) because Ned's last words to Maude were "No footlongs." I acknowledge that The Simpsons being the reason I do this is pretty trivial, but as a young child (when I first saw it) with anxiety, and especially terrible separation anxiety regarding my mum growing up, it really stuck with me. I couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to me or my mum (and now I'm an adult, my girlfriend) and my last words to them not being that I love them.

Yeah true that, in my country we are over saturated with studying people who can’t find a job after completing university. And we have a big number of open jobs/ positions in "normal work/trades" like Logistics, Construction, etc. I blame it on todays misconception that you can only get successful if you go to Uni and get an academic degree. Sad to see.

This case actually led to some sweeping changes to the way the Victorian Police conduct business, especially with missing persons. The police involved at Box Hill Station were quite rightly hauled over the coals and punished over this. In Australia there are State and Territory Police for the states and 2 territories. The police across all the Melbourne suburbs (called cities by Simon) are Victoria Police, as are all the police in the Victorian country towns outside of Melbourne. Same with my state of NSW, and all the others. All under the same individual state/territory umbrella, and reporting at one station should lead to that report being submitted to the whole system. In this case, unfortunately, that system broke down due to absolute incompetence and laziness, as well as a system that was outdated and lacked common sense with regard to missing persons. Richmond police most likely didn’t take a report because they thought report had already been submitted, but who knows. It must also be pointed out that the computer/intranet/internet communication in Australia even in the late 1990s was nowhere near where it is today. It’s certainly not done that way now, especially with all the different ways we communicate nowadays and with procedures in place for missing persons, especially children.

While Kevin paints Boxhill like its own town, it's a large suburb of Melbourne and local police in Australia are sub-units of their respective state police. They may legitimately had a lot of cases, bu base on what locals have said on here Boxhill station seem to be lacking in basic policing skills. I work in a large sheriff's office in Texas and I have older coworkers and supervisors who were still doing handwritten reports into the mid '00s. Not all cases get passed on and I can't imagine what searching for reports was like back then.

I'm a Victorian & these suburbs were my stomping grounds through the 90's. I know them quite well. I'm not surprised about this Police Station, thankfully I never had to deal with them personally, my Local one was excellent though. In the 90's some stations did have some end of shift knock offs, they weren't 24 hours, but I believe Box Hill wasn't one of those for 'reasons', I won't get into here. We have suburbs, then "City of" which is a collection of Suburbs (Electoral & Governance), then the State; so we're broken down in that way; some refer to themselves as a Shire, but essentially the same as 'City of" more regional areas adopt the 'Shire of'. I now live in Regional Vic, if there is a missing person, the area does not mess around. We rally.

No being a Creative and trying to make a career out of it is VERY hard. You're just exceptionally good at both the creative and business management/work ethic part of it which is rare for creatives. The fact that you have about 10 active channels going at once and have a fair sized staff of writers, editors, and other people; really does show you figured out and/or fell nicely into the creation of youTube content. I've been writing scripts for KZbinrs for a couple of years now and I only occasionally sell them as one offs, or manage to find low paying but very casual work simply because I am socially inept and don't have the network to flood with samples and portfolios to suggest to potential employers/buyers (gotta love crippling anxiety, I have the writing style of a master of linguistics and puns, but ask me a simple question like "you want fries with that" and I will have to force a stammer answer out... I honestly think some people I have interviewed with didn't believe my samples were mine when it came to the direct conversation parts of the interviews)

Not to pop your bubble, but Simon has at least 3 different people managing *him* in different aspects of his job. And as the last Brain Blaze stream showed, unless he has someone slapping his hands with a ruler he will go for the easiest short-term option. Like making an off-hand comment that donation notifs annoy him and if somebody donates 100$ he will end the stream then as soon as somebody donated cut the stream. A HORRIBLE long-term decision both when one looks at the business management side of the problem and on _work_ _ethics_ side. What Simon *does* have on his side is his familiarity with what kind of content will do well on YT
