Mate, I know next to nothing about coding, and am a writer trying to see whether Obsidian is right for my notes/creative process, but I have to say that you make, hands-down, the best tutorials I've seen on the web, paid or unpaid, for... pretty much anything. This could be so utterly confusing for a luddite like me, but you've somehow managed to elucidate it step-by-step without being patronising or superfluous. Brava.

Came back for a refresher, and I honestly appreciate your style so much. Everything is so clear, and concise, and easy to find. There are a ton of Obsidian tutorial that don't accomplish what they advertise. I need good tips and explanations for notetaking, not some deep philosophical tangent essay on productivity, and the human condition. Not everything needs profound to be useful and praiseworthy.

I'll try and be more careful about what's available by default and what's not. The good news is that it's not in any early access version of Obsidian. The bad news is that it's a community plugin that's still experimental. It's this plugin: github.com/nothingislost/obsidian-query-control . If you would like to use it in Obsidian, you'll need to first install the Obsidian42 BRAT plugin and then install Query Control through there. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I have been playing around with Obsidian this morning to learn more about how to use it, so this video is perfect timing! Thanks! I have a little programming background, but am still a beginner, so this video is great! I found your channel from your learning Swedish video, because I've started using obsidian to help me learn German. I initially tried using Notion since every youtuber seems to use it, but I found Notion to be so frustrating! I really like Obsidian, but I do think a better way to use tables/spreadsheets in Obsidian would be clutch. I do have the advanced tables plugin, at least, but creating tables in markdown is just kind of a pain. Do you use tables in obsidian? Also, I noticed that search results don't include when the search terms show up in headings or note titles, which is very frustrating, but I could just not know what I'm doing.
@nicolevdh
@nicolevdh 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kristine! Welcome! :) Glad to hear from another person who went from Notion to Obsidian. I think you might like the Database Folder plugin, though it really isn't as good as Notion still. But development is happening, and quickly. I hadn't noticed the issue with headings, but certainly with filenames! Since you mentioned you have a programming background, perhaps you have an IDE like VSCode installed? You can open your vault in your IDE and do searches from there... not as convenient, I know, but it does search headings.

Ok I think I figured out my problem with the search! The "Match Case" (Aa) option was selected, so it wouldn't pull up any results if it wasn't exactly matching my search term. This is amazing. Can anyone help me out? I was able to embed a query, but it's not finding any matches for the tag. Does the tag need to be in any specific place (like the metadata) for it to be searchable?

Thank you very much, this video helps a lot by laerning markdown! One thing didn't worked. When I want to embed a search, I don't have this option bar for sorting and this stuff. It's just embeds the result from the search. Has someone an idea why and how to make that this ist shown?

incredibly helpful and clear - thank you Nicole! I wish I had found this video before watching so many others searching for these answers - just a suggestion but maybe adding something like "tips and foundational shortcuts to using Obsidian" could help beginners like me find you more easily? also question - when I do the Embedded Search /query in markdown - it shows up but doesn't have the sort features? wondering if there's something I don't have turned on for that? thanks again!

Hey again Rachael, I did think about talking about shortcuts, but they're so OS-specific and can be seen in Options > Hotkeys, so I thought maybe it wasn't worth me doing... but maybe I'm wrong! Oh! You may need the Query Control plugin. Sorry, I forgot I had that enabled.

Thanks for the video. I watched the video about the new v.1 features. Do you know how to make the call-out look the same way before like title and body have different background colors and a larger line space without using CSS?
@nicolevdh
@nicolevdh 2 жыл бұрын
The only way to change how things look is by using CSS. But you can either use CSS OR change themes, which also work based on CSS. So maybe you could try looking around for other themes, if you would prefer not to modify the CSS.

Nicole, thank you for your excellent videos on Obsidian! I was wondering if you could do a video on notettakiing for university students. I'm a math major looking to use Obsidian for my studies and was hoping you could make a video on how you would approach notetaking for a university student, particularly one in a technical field. Thank you so much for all the work you do!

Hi! Glad you're liking them! Thanks for the suggestion-- I'm not a university student so I can't really talk about that well, but I think a lot of general learning advice should apply, and I can definitely add that to the list. In the meantime, here's a video about how I learn technical subjects, in case it's useful! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJzdpHZ4gKifb5Y

Thank you very much, just a suggestion: can you pls use a light theme while demonstrating so we can easily see different symbols even on low resolution?

Hi! I do generally try to use light themes. Funnily enough though, I also get comments on those videos from people saying that the light themes are glaringly bright... so now I try to use a bit of both!

I dont know why my ipad obsidian is messing with my footnotes 😭 it works to have the same footnote linked to different lines, but then it glitches and won't recognize the numbers anymore. Ive had to restart it alot until i just gave up and used it sparingly and used a tedious combination of heading links Ah, but also because of the heading links, i manage to have a manual TOC. Takes time, but makes me more aware of what my contents are since i make alot of really long notes

Thanks! Definitely a non-coder here. This was helpful. Question: for the footnote, does it automatically convert it to numbers? I noticed you typed in vulcan, and I was expecting the superscript to be vulcan instead of a number
@nicolevdh
@nicolevdh 2 жыл бұрын
Heyyy Laila! Yes, it automatically renders it as numbers. The first time you do it for one source, it's 1, and then it increments it after that. :)
