When in Obsidian, I also use PodNotes for podcasts and Timestamp Notes for videos. I have a hotkey to a templater script that checks the frontmatter for the type of file (video, podcast) and based on that it runs quickadd macros to insert the appropriate time stamps. Using QuickAdd I got to a nice workflow where I use Alt+P to insert a timestamp, stop the player, then I use Alt + Enter to commit the note, which also restarts the player and converts the timestamp link to an Obsidian Buttons button that I assign a sexier CSS class to. This Buttons bit is just an aesthetic preference, but using templater to check which type of file I'm editting and using the appropriate command is really helpful.

Found a limitation where taking the summary and pushing it to the reader for reading later parses the HTML but only about 30% of the entire page, missing the bulk of the meat. It is a great video explaining your process, which everyone else misses; it is fantastic to talk about your framework, but showing its application is priceless.

ah, well a difference for me is that im not worried about or trying to use those things in readwise, i simply use readwise as the transport mechanism for all these kinds of notes (kindle, medium.com articles, podcasts, scanned book highlights, etc) to get into obsidian

Podnotes is fantastic. In Obsidian Mobile you could skip writing the note after the timestamp by embedding an on-the-fly audio recording.

personally i think im smart BECAUSE of ADHD and Autism and my hyperfixation on subject matter, pattern recognition, and systems thinking. i do have an Instagram, instagram.com/tallguyjenks/ and i don't give out my personal email because that's personal (obviously) but my business email and all my emails are all answered by me and me only, so either way you still reach me, its simply a matter of compartmentalizing for me, that email can be found in my youtube about page :)

I used to use overcast but the snipd integration with readwise & Obsidian AND ability to grab an excerpt by simply tapping on an AirPod was enough to make me switch - I even paid for premium for the ability to AI transcribe podcasts so that the snips include text from the transcript right into Obsidian - so great !!

Can I ask why you prefer obsidian over logseq? Still debating on which one to use.

obsidian has a larger plugin ecosystem and i prefer its freefrom structure compared to logseqs outliner paradigm, they may have changed it but obsidian is more mature and im already happily invested at this point

Snipd is awesome. You can also do audiobooks and that’s invaluable. I use Apple Watch to action button to take a snip. Works great!

hey - great overview of all the options - but one big question that I was surprised wasn't answered in this video given how you like to listen while out & about… how do you take notes when out walking? Would love to know your workflow since I assume you don't stop and start jabbing away on a phone etc. I've been using Siri & Apple Notes, but it's all a bit janky and cumbersome. Be so great if there was a way of simply saying 'Hey Siri… capture a podcast note… "really good description of x,y,z here" … and it would generate that text plus a timestamp directly in the applicable Obsidian file…

I just create a snip and use voice to text to transcribe my note, sometimes I do just stop and type it out because I’m not making tons of notes

I don’t know anything about Airr, but the situation of lost notes is the antithesis of how Obsidian works. All notes takens should produce markdown files on your machine.

Another alternative could be Matter, I saw they recently released the option to highlight the transcript of a podcast and export it. However I don’t like the pricing and that I’d mostly use it for that.

A perfect example of why we shouldn't use services that don't allow you to own your data. $$$ services are worse though because they typically go out of their way to prevent you from owning your data. Open source self hosted FTW.

For transcripts I use whisper, a python app made by OpenAI. Most of the podcasts I listen to also upload to KZbin. So I have yt-dlp in a cron job to download everything I listen to and then generate transcripts with whisper. I'm sure you could make a REST interface for this and automatically import into obsidian.

these are all things i do in one form or another as well, i self host a LOT of the things i use and love open source, but for ease of use and interconnectivity sometimes its just easier and less headache to use these services. i dont have the time to spend to tinker and patch tools constantly

I’m less inclined to think so than something like Airr which was proprietary where as zotero is open source but backups never hurt
