This is going to sound weird but when I recently heard this song for the first time it stuck with me as few songs ever have. That's not the weird part. I looked up Nahko Bear to learn more about him after I learned about his connection to the song. I found out that, like me, he has Puerto Rican and Native American ancestry, along with Filipino. I only learned of my substantial native ancestry -- 13 to 15 percent -- after an Ancestry DNA test. I'm not claiming Native American identity, that would be inappropriate on my part. I tell the story by way of theorizing why "Obsidian" grabbed me and didn't let me go. Who knows? Perhaps it speaks to a part of me that, until recently, I didn't know was there.
