WARNING: Interception can cause your peripherals to not work, if they are not plugged in at boot, and/or if you have more than 10 of a device type.
TO UNINSTALL, you must first manually delete keyboard.sys from your system32 drivers, and then you follow the same steps for installation, but type /uninstall instead. If that doesn't work, please watch PART 3!

Hey anyone here know how to uninstall interception? I have a problem with my usb devices, and this could be the cause of my problems.

yeah bro. Literally just do the exact same thing, but type in */uninstall* instead! Sorry for the trouble. It only supports up to 10 of each device type. after that they don't even work normally. :( I only just found out.

Same thing happened to me. That is a file that interception placed there; deleting it wont affect the rest of your system as far as I could tell. Restart your system, delete that file manually, and THEN uninstall interception.

I came across this as an option to having to purchase button boxes for certain games and such where I wanted to have something to simulate a key combo. The information walkthrough and video were very clear and easy to follow. Everything works perfect and now with the three keyboards, I have come up with a nice layout for my setup. My compliments and thanks for your time making this available.

You beautiful man, Taran. I've been using a second keyboard ever since your first tutorial and haven't been able to live without it. But *this* will improve my (and several others') quality of life even more. This is a fantastic tutorial and I'll be using as many keys as I can reach for the rest of my life.

For the most part I am using them to launch frequently used programs and games, as well as controls for various programs. I have the number row set for shortcuts to things like File Explorer, Control Panel, MS Paint, Photoshop, Premiere, things like that. It's real useful for when I need to send a quick screenshot, which always needs to be cropped somehow since I'm using 4 monitors, to just hit PrtScn then hit the Paint button and quickly select, copy, and send (It's quicker for me to do that than use the Snipping tool). The bulk of the keys are shortcuts to frequently played games that are all run though Steam one way or the other. Some are even set to launch batch files that then launch multiple programs at once. I really enjoy having these as physical buttons that I can press at any time, rather than icons on my desktop. In addition to all this, I have Mute, Deafen, and Streamer Mode buttons for use with Discord (these can be lifesavers when you need to quickly mute yourself). I also have the arrow keys programmed for MusicBee specifically, with left and right acting as fast forward and rewind, and up and down changing the volume in the program itself rather than system volume (I also have MusicBee running in Compact mode on an 8" B&W CRT under my main monitor, but that's a tale for another day). Besides that, I have the spacebar set to lock windows and the Alt keys to turn on my screensaver (however the Alt and Win keys have been mimicking my Discord controls since I switched to Intercept, but I'm still looking into it). I still have some things in mind for the future and am always looking for applications to use additional keys for, as well as imagining where I can fit more keyboards on my desk! Oh yeah, and I've also used some old blank VHS tape labels that I've printed icons I've made on and cut to size to put over the keys instead of scotch tape. Everything has a black background and even has the edges blackened with a marker so they blend in nicely with the keys themselves. Anyway, sorry for the long response, but it just goes to show how much use I've been able to put into this!

Travis Abendshien HAH! Excellent, I'd love a picture. You've really taken what I've started and run with it. You know I have a script for an instant snipping tool, right? Mine is mapped to scroll lock. There are also programs like puush that might make things even easier.

I've used this to enable two players to play one game on one computer, and it works great. I only used interception and intercept, since there are enough keys on the keyboard for the game, just not enough room for four hands on one keyboard. (I also made an adapted guide of my own (for me in the future), including a script for quickly generating keyremap.ini in case I use another keyboard). Your guide really helped me here. Thanks for making it!

To make intercept.exe auto apply filters make a batch file that you run instead: @echo off start /min intercept.exe /apply exit I also recommend adding this to your ahk script's auto-execute section, so it auto launches and hides. Process, Close, intercept.exe ; Ends duplicates Run, intercept.bat, %A_WorkingDir%\intercept, Hide WinWait, intercept.exe WinHide, intercept.exe

Thanks for the info here. I simply wanted to map a numpad to have shift, ctrl, and alt keys for Zbrush use and found it surprisingly difficult to accomplish. I finally was able to with Intercept by hand editing the ini and splitting each key into two separate functions, one triggered by pressing the key and the other triggered by lifting. This perfectly simulates holding down shift, alt, or ctrl as a modifier rather than a macro.
@TaranVH
@TaranVH 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I did the same thing, converting numpad5 into a shift key.

Taran Van Hemert Nice. The tricky part for me was that my numpad was using 2 and 3 as key positions rather than 0 and 1. Maybe because I have numlock off? I've read numlock can mess with this type of thing since it's kind of like having a modifier before your macro/remap.
@TaranVH
@TaranVH 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I keep numlock on all the time. Holding SHIFT and using the numpad also results in weird and unpredictable behaviour, which is different between keyboards. On the G15, with numlock on, SHIFT NUMPAD1 actually results in SHIFT END. On other keyboards, it might only be END. And, some numpads have really weird numlock keys, which actually just allow or disallow behaviour that will hit numlock, hit the key, then hit numlock again.

It's designed for developers, who in most cases either want the whole package with Git tracking, or just want a small snippet of code. In the first case you would use git clone in CLI, and in the second case you would copy paste. That's why Github doesn't put a giant download button on its pages - most of its frequent users don't need it. It's still possible though - just throw the raw URL into curl or wget, or right click and save as in browser.

Your Macro videos got me working on a hardware solution. You can either fabricate your own keyboard PCB or buy a kit at any mech board enthusiast site or Massdrop and upload your own firmware to make any key do what you want. Relegendable key caps exist where you can print squares of paper and insert them. I'm almost half way done with my project but I'm at the point where my second keyboard works across systems running PS without installing extra scripts or applications since everything is hardcoded. With a CNC you can even mill your own parts and hand wire a macro keyboard

I'm looking for some special form factors.... two very narrow keyboards that have 20 to 25 keys all in a single row.... They don't even have to be normal keys. They just need to be buttons that are EASY and accurate to press. They could even just be blobs of metal or wires that complete a circuit when your finger touches it. I'm going to use them for gain control. +1 decibel of gain all the way up to +25 decibels of gain. And for the other, -1 db gain all the way down to -25 db gain. I also am looking for a keyboard or button thingy that has a 2x5 layout. I'm also wanting to make these keyboards with LEDs associated with each button or key, to represent information in the program (premiere) as returned from AutoHotKey. For that, I think I could use arduino or something.... but I have very little experience with it... A lot of the hardware solutions I see are really expensive. All I want are different sized grids of buttons, and maybe LEDs. Should that really be so pricey??
@Kori-ko
@Kori-ko 7 жыл бұрын
Taran Van Hemert A lot of custom keyboard stuff tends to be pricy because of the manufacturing cost. PCBs get more expensive for each hole on the actual board, since that's the only mechanical aspect of the PCB production process, and they have to swap drill bits often. a cost saving measure seen on mech boards is SMD components such as LEDs and diodes. for boards with relatively low key counts, you can hand wire them to one of many Arduino-based controllers. I see the Teensy used often. You can find the spec for plate mounting your mech switches online and I'm sure you can 3D print your 2x5 with the Ultimaker but it might not feel as good as a PCB/metal construction. in actually not home right now so it's hard trying to go into specifics on my handy because I can't provide proper links. You can try asking the mechanical keyboard subreddit for better and more detailed advice than I can provide at the moment.

A good kit board I've seen for secondary use is the Sentraq S60-X on Massdrop. it's a 60% that's fully programmable with LED backlighting and good construction for $100. PayPal messed up my transaction and I ended up being taken out of my drop because of a common error, but my girlfriend got in. I eventually bought a 65% but it won't get here until April.
@TaranVH

What I'm talking about is stuff like this: xkeys.com/xkeys/xk16.php There's no reason why 16 keys in a row should cost $100. I don't need anything fancy, I just need a row of buttons.

NOTE: INTERCEPT REALLY WANTS QUICK KEY TAPS WHEN DEFINING FILTERS - as you can see with how he taps out the combo and compares with holding down the keys. I wanted to stress this because it ALSO applies when you're first defining the keys you want program. I just spent HOURS stressing out thinking Intercept wasn't detecting my 2nd keyboard properly but it was all because when I hit "A" to Add filter, it seems I was lingering on that A just a split-second longer than Intercept liked, so even though Intercept ASKS ME to tap the key I wanted to program, whenever I hit the 2nd keyboard's key, it actually took my FIRST keyboard's "A" and put my 2nd keyboard's key into the combo - all in the same step. Technically, you can see the issue since the 2nd keyboard's key is at the beginning of the combo, but I didn't catch that because hey, it's my first time with this program, I don't know its syntax , and thought the combo starts with the initial key press as an ID or something. So I think you can call it a bug because Intercept was handling my earlier keystroke incorrectly, taking it as an answer BEFORE it (supposedly) actually requested and waited for an answer. However, as I assume many people have, you can catch it if you're REALLY paying attention to the steps and output, so, no lazy taps, people!

glad to help! I currently have 1 full keyboard and 2 numpads running, with 2 more ready to be hooked up. One day, inputs from my regular numpad were setting off code intended to be launched from numpad #2. But reloading the "2nd keyboard" autohotkey script fixed it immediately. Intercept.exe is pretty damn stable once you get it working!
@anderssvard3336
@anderssvard3336 7 жыл бұрын
How did you configure the numeric pad in intercept btw, since there are no "q" on it (nor any F12 or esc)? I suspect you took the ini from first keyboards numpad and applied the HID identifier to it instead of the numpads? (that identifier can be found in the hardware handler in windows under HID I guess, or the logs of system that register it when connecting it to the USB-port). See that you have some numpads in the end of your ini file now. I probably can copy/paste that part and change the HID ID on it?
@TaranVH
@TaranVH 7 жыл бұрын
yes I did and yes you can. Once you see enough of the code, it becomes pretty obvious how to modify it. If you are missing any of the keys, you can just (a)dd it as itself with no wrapping, in order to see the exact scan code. Then modify the .ini code to get it to work like the other keys.

I manage to fix that, you might have done it as well but just in case you have not, or another of you users want it here's my scripts: github.com/asvas/AsVas_AutoHotkey_Scripts/blob/master/ahk_Scripts.ahk I've some scripts that people might find interesting and i think this is a good place to post it. The function at line 28 is the one I'm writing here about. It's a small function that you can bind to a key combination on the regular keyboard and use, everytime you start the pc. The function will run intercept and hide it from plane sight. The function also doubles as toggle switch for intercept. This means that if the function is running it'll show you the window or hide it, dependent on the state of it. I'll be improving on a lot of the code whenever i have time. So for those interested they can check it occasionally. Thank you again you wonderful man.

Huh, I really appreciate your work on this! Some of your code is beyond my comprehension (line 94 to 139 for example) but the changes you made to the app switching functionality do make sense. Let me know the best way to link to this from my own repository. That'll be much better than having it available from one tiny KZbin comment. I know my code can be pretty sloppy/simple, but aside form not really knowing what I'm doing, I will often prefer a simpler but more verbose solution, (without tons of nested functions and weird tables and stuff) just for the sake of the newbies who are still learning AHK while they try to implement my own code for themselves. Notes about intercept/interception: Sometimes, USB devices will just refuse to work, until you restart the computer and have them plugged in from the beginning. It can also interfere with the primary keyboard and mouse, under some (unknown) circumstances. So some people have had to uninstall it.

Well i'm new to this as well, as a mater of fact, your script was my first totorial in AHK, so i can immagine that my code is quite slappy as well. Likes 94 to 139 are some dictionary functions that i'm using. Multiple languages needed all the time for me. I really like to have a clean definition of what key doest what, that's the reason i take the codes in a function beyond the key listing, otherwise i'm loosing the definitions in between the code and that confuses me. I'm using the the setup on dailybasis and have no issue with intercept, except the regular "some keys not wise to be edited". I'm running it, hidding it and it's like it's not there. Well one slight problem for me was that it cannot desting between two identical keyboards at all. I wanteded to use two identical keyboard but no luck there. However i had some issues with AHK, for instance in my office settup AHK was able to detect some .exe files and run them directly without the need from the filepath and at my home PC that was not possible. But now it works as a charm. I've made AHK to be an .exe file (there is integrated compiler in AHK) made it to run on startup and uses keycombination Shift+WIN to run my start intercept function, that runs intercept and hide it. It's clean and i like it. In regards to the linking to my github, i agree, do it. I don't know how but i'll try. One quick search suggested to use something in github called: "git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Tools-Submodules". However github is even more confusing than programing for me. I'll add some decription to my code when i can to let people know what is going on on every row. Well not much for the people but most likely for my future self. Thank you again Taran.

Thank you veeeeeery much for taking the time to explain and learn how to do it. It works for me, but i have a question: what is the use of autohotkey, since it works without it ?
@TaranVH

ahk can do a shitton of stuff that intercept.exe cannot do. It's not just for sending keystrokes.
@Levoxel

Alright. So for a simple redirect keystroke, intercept is enough. But for more, the ahk layer is required. So do you think ahk could reproduce a 'hold key' behavior, since it is something intercept can't do ?

Is the keyboard id specific to the model of keyboard or each individual keyboard plugged in? If the id is the same than that would mean that if you added a third keyboard it would have to be different, right? So you couldn't do a Tom Scott and make an emoji keyboard.

Hey Taran, I am going to do this soon with some custom functions for POS software and to play some sound files. Is it best just to use intercept or intercept and ahk??? (Lol my iPad thinks you are Tarzan)

THANKS Taran! this video is very helpfull and useful! Great job I have a question thought; i'm using only intercept without AHK cause my lighting software doesen't detect it well.. All working fine unless the hold down key, can i solve it in any way? Keyremap was working fine for it and now with intercept it seems it detects multiple times the same key instead of more time than the same.. In a notepad.. Both keyboards seems to react equal. If you could point me in thr right direction it would be very appreciat it. Many thanks!

You... have not adequately described your problem. I have no idea how to help you. are you saying that you launch keyboard macros straight out of interception? uh Take a look at how I specially remapped numpad 5 in my own keyremap.ini file. This MIGHT be the answer you're looking for.

Love this! i was not able to get LUAMACROS to work right. Only question is how did you make the switch from f12 to f23? You changed it in AHK and it just started working at 14:15 . Your Keyremap.ini was already set to F23 but how did you get that there?
@TaranVH

knowing the scan code (6E) I just did a full-document find and replace from 58 (scan code of F12, I think). I thought I do explain that in the video?

found the issue. On github the part where you copy the f23 wrapper @8:50 ish the text is using f12 to wrap and not f23. i was having an issue and i caught that by reading the keymap.ini at line 7.

edit: So my problem is that I've set every letter to be Ctrl + Alt + , in AHK ^!q in example in case of Q. Then I tried to set my OBS to change layouts, mute mic, etc.. with those said commands, but it doesn't work. Sometimes when I set up those hotkeys it flashes F23 quickly before changing it to the proper one, like Ctrl + Alt + Q. How can I use this secondary keyboard so that it doesn't pick that F23, but works basically just like hotkeys. My AHK script is very clean, only consist necessary information and then those letters. Thank you in advance!

TAB filename completion in command prompt is terrible compared to bash on linux though. Everything you've type after the filename get's overwritten with the completion.

I have started to work with this, it works really well for my first couple of macros (mostly media/volume controls) Now, I know how to autostart autohotkey scripts in the background, but can I just put intercept.exe into the autostart folder? Will it run as a background process or does it always have to have the console window open? If it's possible to run it in the background, will the filters automatically be applied?

GitHub is for hosting "git repositories", so you're supposed to use the Git program and clone the repo to your computer to get everything. That's probably why There's no "download" buttons anywhere (excepted the one to get a .zip of the current branch you're looking at)

Thank you for this. I tried this with Visual Studio, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get Intercept to work consistently. I was able to get it work a couple of times (after applying, it does respond with keys it intercepts), but most of the time, it's deaf to anything I press on the numpad. Intercept had the best chance of success cause LuaMacros doesn't go low enough to bypass Visual Studio's keyboard connection. Back to memorizing keyboard shortcuts.
