In this video Leah addresses the issue of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in veterans and its relation to VA disability claims. She explains that OSA occurs when throat muscles relax during sleep, causing airway obstruction. For a VA service connection, she notes that a sleep apnea diagnosis must be confirmed by a polysomnogram (sleep study). Leah discusses two types of service connections: primary and secondary. Primary connection is possible if OSA was diagnosed during active duty, while secondary connection relates to OSA resulting from another service-connected condition like mental health disorders or medication side effects. She emphasizes the importance of supporting evidence, such as buddy statements, to substantiate undiagnosed OSA during service.

B C I have nearly the same conditions you have. Except additionally I have a deviated septum Sinusitis/Rhinitis that was never fixed by my two sinus surgeries performed while I was on active duty. I’m currently obese with recent weight gain due to being locked up for covid 19 so I gained weight! I could probably dedicate myself to loose weight say within 6-9 months so nobody uses my weight as an excuse to not to tie my OSA to the fact I’ve been suffering frequent long term symptoms prior to my weight gain I might be calling this organization to assist me with developing a full claim for my condition. I was DX last year with OSA and I’m now using a CPAP issued by the VA Im also 70% PTSD for combat. I’D prefer to tie my OSA to having verifiable breathing issues! Could you tell me a little about how you proceeded with your claim? Any advice would be much appreciated by me and any other veteran who’s in need of help with their VA disabilities.6

@@mexvette8209 my advice would be to have records review , provide your C File and any VA denial letters to Prestige and see what they can offer. It was a simple process working with Prestige, I too have a deviated septum and I'm rated at 30% for Rhinitis and Sinusitis. I also submitted several buddy letters and a spousal letter documenting observations from my Active Duty time.

I am trying to get my OSA service connected but I have seen appeals get denied with the VA saying buddy or spouse statements can not be used to diagnose OSA because a typical "Lay" person can not diagnose OSA. Can I claim Sleep Apnea secondary to tinnitus or Migraines .
@prestigeveteranmedical
@prestigeveteranmedical 2 жыл бұрын
You can certainly claim anything at any time that you believe is related to service however I do not believe that migraines or tinnitus cause sleep apnea which is due to collapse of the upper airway

@prestigeveteranmedical
@prestigeveteranmedical Жыл бұрын
You would not be able to get connected before filling a claim. You have to submit a claim in order for them to look at it for you. You may want to consider getting claims filling advice from a VSO in your local area

@prestigeveteranmedical

@@TheTejasman no it does not cause sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is caused by a mechanical collapse of the upper airway and it is physiologically not possible for tinnitus to do that

Hey sir many people do this. It will be combined likely due to pyramiding but you would receive the higher of the two ratings. You would want to clarify that with a VSO

Many vets have sleep issues due to training schedules, watch/guard schedules, and certain types of training where sleep deprivation is utilized as a punishment. I myself washed out of the SFQC back in 1984. I can't tell you how many times we were limited to only a couple of hours of rest per night. Then there are times where you are awoken as a harassment tool. We all went through similar experiences in basic training, but for some it continues past those phases into a somewhat 'regular' routine. Are there any conclusive studies on special warfare candidates/operators having greater incidences of sleep apnea?
