For those whose ocean shader didn't work past the second multiply node: Since 2.92, you will need to change 2 things: 1) Connect the 'light path' node to the 'factor' input on the first multiply node. 2) Connect the 'color' output of the 'colorRamp' node to 'color1' rather than 'color2' of the first multiply node. If the rest of the shader is set up as seen in the video at 16:57, you'll be good to go!

@9:02 The **dot product** is the cosine of the angle between two vectors. In layman's terms, if the dot product * == 1 then the two vectors are pointing in the same direction, * == 0 then the two vectors are perpendicular * == -1 then they are pointing away from one another. It is used in lighting calculations to determine how much light should effect a surface by taking the dot product of the surface's normal vector and the direction to the light.

Awesome tutorial, thanks! ... Apply scale. Of course! D'oh. Was beating my heat against those odd overlaps for awhile. Regarding water and color: Water itself may have no color, but stuff suspended IN the water will scatter the light rays in different ways. Thus it makes sense to color the volume scatter. Could be algae, sand, minerals, etc.

Tip: with the new 'vector rotate' node, what one can do is rotate the unit vector (0, 0, 1) with type set to Euler, center 0,0,0 and using drivers for the rotation. This way, you can obtain the actual light direction of the sun lamp, and so you needn't mess around with the normal node.

The start worked out well enough until I got to the boolean operation. My computer really did not like that at all. It froze for quite a while, and when I could resume command again, the boolean left a weirdly shaded box, and some random lines from the ocean extrusion was left remaining on the outside. Chaning viewport display for Domain from texture to bounds did nothing. I'm on version 2.92, so I'm wondering if something broke since this tutorial.

can I put this “ocean” in a room and make it smaller? or does the ocean need the environmental texture? (sorry I'm a beginner)
@oby1
@oby1 10 ай бұрын
This is a very open ended question- by putting it in a room? As in tracking it into live action footage? That will require motion tracking, and general light and color matching. I'd suggest Ian Hubert for tutorials on that. For the environmental texture, I'm not sure. Sounds like you're referring to an HDRi. Those are 360 images that helps light the scene more accurately. If you plan to do a VFX shot, you'll need to: 1- motion track 2- make your scene (the ocean) 3- match lighting and color (get a free HDRi that roughly matches your footage- check Poly Haven for free ones) 4- Composite your video using either Blender or After effects
