Safety is not something to laugh off and say it's for the beginner. A leash is important for all paddlers even even experts. The weather conditions can suddenly change. A paddler without a leash can quickly be separated from his/her canoe in a huli with strong wind situation. A leash is perhaps more important than a PFD because the canoe becomes your PFD if you are wearing a leash. The leash is your lifeline to your canoe. Of course having a leash and PFD is best.
