In this Chemistry video in Hindi for Class 10 we explained how metals are extracted from their ore. At first ore is enriched or concentrated. Then concentrated ore is extracted to its elemental form. The impure metal is then purified.
Enrichment of Ore / Concentration of ore :
Ores mined from the earth are usually contaminated with large amounts of impurities such as soil, sand, etc., called gangue.
Different processes are used for removing the gangue from the ore depending upon the differences between the physical or chemical properties of the gangue and the ore.
Extraction :
Different chemical and physical processes are employed to convert the ore into metal. Those processes are electrolysis, calcination, roasting, reduction etc.
Refining of metals :
The metals produced by various processes contain impurities, which must be removed to obtain pure metals.
Extracting Metals towards the Top of the Activity Series :
The metals high up in the reactivity series are very reactive.
These metals are obtained by electrolytic reduction.
For example, sodium, magnesium and calcium are obtained by the electrolysis of their molten chlorides.
Extracting Metals in the Middle of the Activity Series :
The metals in the middle of the activity series such as iron, zinc, lead are moderately reactive.
These are usually present as sulphides or carbonates in nature.
It is easier to obtain a metal from its oxide, as compared to its sulphides and carbonates.
Therefore, prior to reduction, the metal sulphides and carbonates must be converted into metal oxides in the process of roasting or calcination.
Roasting : It is a process of heating a sulfide ore to a high temperature in the presence of air.
Calcination : It is a process in which ore is heated in the absence or limited amount of air.
Extracting Metals in the Middle of the Activity Series :
The metal oxides are then reduced to the corresponding metals by using suitable reducing agents such as carbon.
Sometimes displacement reactions with highly reactive metals such as sodium, calcium, aluminium, etc., can also be used for reduction.
Extracting Metals Low in the Activity Series :
Metals low in the activity series are very unreactive.
The oxides of these metals can be reduced to metals by heating alone.
Refining of Metals :
The metals produced by various reduction processes described above contain impurities, which must be removed to obtain pure metals.
The most widely used method for refining impure metals is electrolytic refining.
Many metals, such as copper, zinc, tin, nickel, silver, gold, etc., are refined electrolytically.
In this process, the impure metal is made the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode.
