A rare and excellent practical user guide for those of us travelling Europeans who now find that a portable internet radios are the only way to receive our home broadcaster (eg. bbc) on our travels through the continent. The reason is that DAB is taking over and it's even more strictly local than FM. And even the BBC has dropped all it's local SW frequencies and much of its MW/LW - reception is better in Africa or Afghanistan! Sure, we could use our mobile phones, but it's useful to have all our regular channels, and infinitely more, in one small box with a decent speaker. For oldies like me, making comparisons between different models, with their different menu/channel access systems and Wifi capabilities ain't easy. Eg. how does the wise Toddebert rate the WR -18 against the WR-23 he reviewed 4 years ago, or any of the other portables?

I like the WR-18 the most for portability. It also has a better antenna inside. Rarely do I have to restart it.

@@todderbert Thanks. It's difficult to work out with Ocean Digital which of their compact portables (WR 18, 23, 26) is the most up to date and still(?) eligible for software support. Only Pure internet radios have a reputation for regular updates. The progression in Ocean Digital numbers does not seem to be a guide. I also wonder about wifi range and access, important for a portable. They all seem to be single 2.4 Mhz frequency, rather than dual - with 5Mhz as well.

Great Review Todd! Thank you! This radio needs Bluetooth out to listen on earbuds or wireless headset. I would have liked Todd to spend more time using the Internet Radio and lesser time on FM and music from MP3

The LCD display and WIFI would make it a real bad receiver on AM

You might find the even smaller WR-23D or WR-23F even more compelling.

Hi Todd, really appreciate all the great reviews and I've learned a lot watching them. It's fun to hear you go up the dial on MW and fiddle with the radio and accessories to get a station to come in. As i now have a C Crane SSB2, thanks in part to your reviews, I'd next like to purchase an Internet radio. But i want one that records, and on a schedule. Is there such a beast? You mention other ways in the video, and a quick bit of GoogleFu brought up options, but i can't find my radio unicorn. Thanks!

Not that I know of, there was the older Sangean Recorder that could be used as a timed recorder.

I've had this one for about a year but it has Renkforce on the front, exactly the same radio though but my vodafone router just won't let me connect to the skytune network. Any ideas anyone ? Only my mobile phone will work when I use it as a hotspot

How would a record option be added via a firmware update if it has no recording circuitry or Bluetooth Transmission via a firmware update if it has no Bluetooth Transmitter in it ? It looks like it's better than the Ocean Digital WR-23D you reviewed in another video because al the jacks are on the side instead of the back and it has 5 preset buttons on the front but I have concerns about what you said starting at 9:38 about the FM Reception is only 3 or average and has poor selectivity of strong radio station signals and will get signal bleed over interference from another station. Maybe a firmware up date could fix this issue.

Hej Todderbert thanks for the review the Ocean Digital WR-18 is a very interesting radio. I like the features it has and the compact size i have actually looked at some internet radios lately to buy. I have an internet radio that is very good, it's the Sangean WFR-29C. But the Ocean Digital WR-18 is more compact and smaller, so I like that. Yes, I agree the price is maybe a little too high, but it seems to be a very nice radio with lovely features. Take care Todderbert and have a nice evening or night.

I don't have any Ocean radios, so it would be nice to have one from that brand as well. And cold winds here in Umeå city, it feels like autumn is on its way. what type of bult in battery used , i know 18650 have but the connector y so rare ansd no sale easy in any site....is so sad no have battery 18650 regular, whit external door

Probably a Lipo flat pack, but the circuitry allows you to keep it plugged in all the time.

What portable, rechargeable and best value radio would you recommend for when shtf? Does it matter if it is dab, dab+ or analogue?

I would go compact, because you most likely will be on the move. The Skywave SSB would be one of my top choices because it delivers seventy hours of run time on 2AAs which you can charge if you have NiMH installed. You would need to carry a solar panel, or have a way to charge them. Shortwave, and SSB has the potential to reach around the world, so many will consider this a good "prepper" type radio. If on a budget, the Tecsun PL-330 would be another top choice because it is rechargeable, but does not use a standard battery, but a Lithium BL-5C. It does have SSB Shortwave which again will allow you to monitor transmissions made from around the globe. It is fairly compact as well. Using a larger solar setup to charge your gear is ideal. There are more portable solutions as well.

Nice overview and review. One question, Does it allow you to log into hidden networks ? The Ocean Digital radio I presently own did not and I had to contact my provider to "Unhide and after I was set up to Hide" my WiFi network. Thank you

The Ocean Digital WR-18 internet radio does not explicitly state the ability to log into hidden networks in its specifications. All Band radios are not perfect, but my favorite is the Raddy RF919. the use of external antennas makes it a beast. I don't mind the mute on tuning, some do.

Please let me know if FM in stereo mode is available when connected to external amplifier via headphone jack?

I tested this with my V115, and found out the patch cable to the line in from the headphone jack of the WR-18 is indeed acting as the FM antenna. A longer length of wire is needed to get decent reception. I tried a couple speakers with short wires, and that didn't work out well at all.
