It kind of needs 3 categories, ocean, Great Lakes, lakes. I swim in Lake Erie, pretty much a fresh water ocean.

Oh man, I just did my open water training in Mediterranean Sea with waves, after swallowing 2 waves of saltiest water ever I wanted to quit 😅😢 I prefer my Baltic Sea 🌊 😊

What? Mediterranean is one of the easiest seas to swim at

This has come at EXACTLY the right time. All my previous Tris have been lake swims (which is good because I like close to great lakes that I swim weekly) . Starting to get into the sea THIS WEEK in preparation for The Roc Wales in September 😬😜. Big thing for me is being safe. I feel so much safer swimming in a lake where I know there will be a good few swimmers / kayakers etc around - even at 6am . And do go alone at times (with float bag ) . I feel the sea is so much vaster and feel I need company with me every time which makes scheduling training slightly more difficult

I am currently training in a small local lake with rather clear water and start to enjoy it ;-) However, I am a bit afraid of an ocean swim...

I’m happy you made this vid, I want to start sea swimming a couple of times a week because I live by the sea and need to start doing more low impact exercise. Excellent tips even for a newbie, thanks

I live on an Island (Long Island, NY, USA) and we have two very large protected bays (The Peconic Bay and The Great South Bay) that are used in a lot of our open water triathlons. It's salt water, but doesn't have the same roughness issues or currents as in the ocean. It's essentially the best of both worlds.

Could you talk about swim goggles with prescription lenses? Last time I was in a lake, I got maybe 75m out from shore and realized I could not see the shore (fortunately I could see people between me and the shore).

You forgot to mention sharks and other biting critters in the ocean, lakes and rivers. Recently in Lake Tahoe a man was attacked by otters. They bit his legs and left wounds. In the Brisbane River in Australia, there are bull sharks. There is even a story of a bull shark in Lake Michigan.

Of course there are sharks in a riven in Australia, lol.

I’ve worked really hard on my stroke rate. I’ve got it up to around 90 per minute. I can push to mid 90s for short periods but can’t sustain it! 😅

I did my first Ironman race in the ocean. Panama City Beach, FL. I mainly swim in a river. The ocean was a fun experience. There were jellyfish.

Did you struggle swimming with waves after just doing river swimming?

Question for people doing/have done IM... if the course is in the sea/ocean, is it usually in the direction of the current or are you swimming into the current the entire time? That could be a ton of energy

It’ll take me a few more years in the pool before I dare to try open water anything. I am too new to swimming.

I tend to think sea water is going to be cleaner most of the time and less likey to get ill from germs?

Actually you didn’t mentioned the biggest difference to me, and the main reason why I never search for full distance IM on the ocean: chafing. I’ve swam 10K in lakes before. But as soon as I swim 1.5K in the ocean, the place where my biceps touches my lats on each stroke hurts awfully to the point I just can’t continue. It seems that kind of rubbing is OK without salt, but the salt water makes unaware constant small rashes that after 30 minutes I’m dying of pain. I found no solution for it. Only to look for races without salty water.

Hi. I have been swimming continuously for about 7 years, at least 4 times a week. but I have an audition ahead of me and I have been eliminated in these auditions for the last two years. I have to swim 800 meters in less than 16 minutes, but I am short of breath during my attempts and I am out of breath. what would you recommend me to do? thanks #gtncoachescorner

Being a horrible swimmer as is it'll be quite some time till I sign up for an event with a sea swim. That being said next week I'll swim in a literal river for the first time in my life... it's only 500m but half of that is against the current ^^' Personally I prefer quiet lakes, swam in the Bodensee a couple of days back which is really quite choppy the more you get into it, which is also a surprise since the beach area is just an overgrown mess but otherwise very quiet.

Difference is ocean could very well be nigh on impossible if the wind is against you and ruin your day!
