This rescue is hard to watch. It happened in July 2020 and we have hesitated since whether we should share this rescue with the world or not. Most of our rescues are quick and easy, exciting and uplifting. The vast majority of entangled seals are released before they even know that they had been in severe trouble, without any major physical or emotional damage.
This one was different. He was weak and did not have much time left. He should have been taken to a place with proper rehab facilities under veterinary guidance, which is not available anywhere in Namibia, or even been euthanized if all else fails. He had a piece of fishing line tightly wrapped around his mouth, it had caused so much swelling that you can barely see his nose. The rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia patiently assessed the situation before they started removing the fishing line. He relaxed after a while, he even seemed to be supportive, but the extraction must have been very painful for the animal. We hope he survived. We hope the salty seawater took the infection away, and that he found lots of fish close by to regain his strength.
This video is hard to watch. We were there during the rescue and we can barely look at it.
Seal rescue videos are more than just a daily feel good story. We have done many other rescues similar to this once, and we published this video after long internal discussions to serve as a reminder how much pain and injury human negligence is causing, and that we will never stop fighting for each individual seal, because they simply deserve better. 🦭

I've seen my dad help remove a few fish hooks from kids when someone would ask him for help they would come to visit us with crying and screaming kids, this was before we had a clinic even when we did they would ask my dad he even took out my little sister's stitches we had to use the military hospital in Anniston a long drive to remove them nope he did them with himself and mom of course and peroxide again before a town clinic

Wow! As a physician who has dealt with and removed plenty of foreign objects from people, (but not seals), that was impressive! I'll be sure to show this to my veterinarian daughter, I know she'll be quite impressed, too. Thanks for showing us the uncut version, as people need to see the consequences of their actions. I always feel better about humanity and the world in general after watching your videos, and appreciate the service you provide those animals. I have to go make a donation to you now, because you're super stars! Thank you.

All these situations are bad but this takes the cake it was the worst that I've seen they didn't go up I got to the point that they needed to call a veterinarian ! I wish they had some injectable long lasting (2 week) antibiotics they could administer on the go for wounds like this. They wouldn’t need it often, but in cases like this, it’ll likely save the seal. I have little hope for this dude if the infection is already in the bone. Otherwise, maybe he’ll make it with constant salt water washing it.😢 The chance is sepsis is high, too.

@@JasperStoneChroniclesIIAngiboo His job is to secure the seal so the entanglement can be removed in the safest manner. Immobilizing the seal prevents it from further injuring itself during the mission. If Denzil was applying too much pressure I'm positive the seal would not relax and stay calm as it was in the video. It would be fighting for its life to get free. I hope you all have made a contribution to OCN to help them continue their work. I think Leatherman needs to sponsor OCN, they are getting so much product promotion and extreme field testing for free. I even purchased a pair of Raptor shears after watching these videos!

@@TheGuitarmanrh it's not that it wouldn't without a vet... it's that it needs STERILE. I would think after such a DEEP wound like this this attempt to sterilize the wound and stitch up what they possibly could, even if it was something very "in the field" done. These guys need dissolvable stitches and some antibiotics.
@poloska9471
@poloska9471 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGuitarmanrh it is surprising what some nice salt water can do for a wound and overall health in terms of bacterial ailments. If this seal has a strong immune system (which it seems to have a really great one considering how long it’s lived with that thing stuck in its mouth and face), it may just be alright if it takes constant baths in salt water… the puss and bacteria will get washed out and little by little it should start to heal, since it only couldn’t heal because the seal moved a lot to survive which would never let the wound close up due to the line in there… now it should be a matter of a couple of weeks and it will be okay I think. However, obviously, a vet would definitely be great but given the circumstances, this may just work out in the end due to the salt water environment/microbiology.

Great job from the standpoint that they were finally able to dislodge the line, but this was really frustrating to watch. None of these people give the appearance of any kind of training or veterinary knowledge. They also need a kit of specialized equipment, like a silicon padded oral retractor, an LED battery operated snake light, specialized hooks to get under tightly wrapped line, a fast acting topical to address infection (like a 10% iodine &saline solution,) and a thin mat (like a computer mouse pad) large enough to keep the seal from sinking and suffocating in the sand and to keep the sand from filling the seal's nostrils and mouth. Also, there should be some kind of training for these rescuers. Even though their hearts are in the right place, they really don't know what they are doing. The man who was trying to hook the line was terrified and kept backing off, and had no idea how to approach the problem. They should sew up toy seal, gather up some specialized equipment, and practice some different scenarios instead of the whole thing being OJT (on the job training). That poor seal should have been back in the water in under three minutes.
@chrisnotap
@chrisnotap 2 жыл бұрын
@@Brembelia I get what you're saying but this is an "on the job training" type of job. Where would you go for training for this? People would probably come to them for training!! A vet would not have the time for this. The end result is they got the job done with limited tools but with hearts of gold.
