As a Maori, I very much see myself as Polynesian. We see ourselves connected with other Polynesians - Tongan, Samoan, etc - in much the same way as, say, Native American/First Nations do. Oceania and Australasia, on the other hand, are just labels made by outsiders that can be useful sometimes.

It is common , just the school system in the States doesn't teach much outside their own boundaries. Melanesian Islands have a huge tourist industry, it is what mostly keeps their economies working, 5 star resorts etc. Australian's, New Zealanders and a lot of Europe holiday in that region just like a lot of American's and Canadian's holiday in the Caribbean.

A lot of the reasons these cultures aren't widely known about is that many people don't take the action to look up information about peoples cultures.

As an aussie i find Vanuatu and nearby islands to be fascinating. I have visited many of the islands in Oceania since childhood. They are all different and diverse. Some very friendly and some terrifying. I never understood missionary's. I find them to be arrogant ; forcing another culture to believe in what you beleive is the better way. Aboriginals are still stuck in this way in Australia. It's sad to see.

Speaking of Fiji, they have some of the most unexpected culture and history in Oceania. Fiji links many of the smaller islands in Oceania, and after Australia and New Zealand they would probably be considered the next regional powerhouse. Would love to see you guys react to the Fiji episode!

Being Australian, we were taught about the Pacific Islands. Over the many years I've had some Pacific Islander friends, from Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Guam & others. Lately there has been much discussion on the Zealand continental shelf. This a new discovered continent, consisting of NZ & the Polynesian Islands. Very interesting stuff. Also the discovery of an ancient rock structure in NZ. The Kaimanawa wall Some theorists who claimed there were pre-Māori civilisations in New Zealand believed this stone wall in the Kaimanawa State Forest provided evidence for their ideas. It was said that the 'blocks' indicated that it was built by an earlier culture.

Australia and New Zealand have their group of Island friends in the Pacific, and here in the US and Canada, we have the Caribbean. Huge Pacific Islander population in ANZ, and huge Caribbean population here in North America!

I am from New Zealand, The Maori, Cook Islanders are like 1st cousins. The wider family are the Hawaiians, Tahitians, Tongans and Samoans and the other smaller Countries. They are Polynesian and are also known as Pacific Islanders. In the New Zealand Census ethnicity is asked by country eg. Samoan, Maori. Also there is a lot of intermarriage between Pacific Islanders. The Fijians are the most well known of the Melanesian in NZ but the Australians are more familiar with Papua New Guinea, Nauru and the Fijians. New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji have Cruise Ships visiting thru the Summer season also around Australia and New Zealand. The Cruise Ships also going to other Polynesian Ports but the Melanesian ones are the closest to Aussie.

As a side note, China has been making “investments” in some of these smaller countries of late. Guaranteeing a presence in the region between Australia and the USA should anything happen.

Oceania is a continent I'm amazed you guys haven't heard of it. The 7 continents is basic geography 😅
@siryogiwan10 ай бұрын
it's more technical than just a continent, it's used as a grouping for pacific ocean countries, even those nowhere near the continent, it's both used economically and in sports, including computer games

@@Farrow1990 There are no 7 continents, everyone groups the landmasses differently. Eurofrasia can be counted as one, or as 4+ (giving India its own continet since its on its own continental plate for example)

When I was going to school in Australia back in the 60s I was taught that Australia was a continent and Oceania was the region that we were located in. In more recent times it became trendy to just lump Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and all the small Island nations of the South Pacific together and call it the continent of Oceania (pronounced O SHE ARNA) . My theory is that they started doing it for health reasons - at the time there had been a real concern for the deteriorating mental health of people who were living in countries constantly being left off maps of the world ( kiwis suffered particuarly badly from it) and as we became more woke it was about inclusion. Next thing you know Tasmanians will hear about Oceania and want to be included in it but unfortaunately a line will have to be drawn somewhere.

Shit, American Geography really must be bad if anyone can just not know anything about one of the continents (well, technical continent, because for some countries Australia is a continent and for some others this continent is known as Australia and Oceania)

it's reasonably new to talk about Australasia and Oceania, can't remember exactly when it was started in mainstream use, but was originally an economical and sport grouping, in usage, if I'm not mistaken, the continent usage is still debated. I personally only use it when talking about the region I'm from when gaming, as a lot of games used Oceania as a region for servers, before having servers in more countries in Australasia

Torres Straight Islanders are their own people, on paperwork, we (all Ozzies) get asked if we identify as "Aboriginal and/or Torres Straight Islander", being they interacted with both PNG and Oz, different people will see themselves differently, from the straight

just remembered, there's a short vid called "Horton's Map (a Yakko's World Parody)", which the guy sings every Aboriginal Language name, as location of where spoken is shown on map of Oz, goes about 5min, there's thought to have been around 600 languages, some nations having multiple, spoken in different areas. I give the guy that made it, hard props, he is a white guy, but felt it important to put real effort into pronouncing some of the most confusing looking words you'll ever see and did the research himself to put it together
