Structures of the ocean relief - 1 Continental shelf 2 Continental slope 3 Continental rise 4 Abyssal/Deepsea plains 5 Mid ocean ridges 6 Trenches 7 Seamount 8 Volcanic Island 9 Guyot Factors affecting ocean water temp - Vertical distribution- Higher the depth, colder the water. Warm water on surface. After thermocline, cold water starts. Horizontal distribution- Deals with temp of surface ocean water. 1 Latitude - Higher the latitude, less is the temp 2 Insolation- More the Insolation, more will be the temp. Hence, warmer water in tropics, cold water near poles 3. Land distribution- Water near land is warmer due to conduction. Hence water in Northern hemisphere is warmer than water in southern hemisphere. 4. Wind - warm ocean surface water flows in the direction of wind and causes upwelling of cold water 5. Ocean currents- Warm ocean currents raise the temp, Cold ocean currents cools down the temp.
