Rodney, As a former Biology and Ecology teacher there was no way I could pass this game up after i read the review in Science Magazine. I'm gonna recruit my sister to play remotely in these isolative times. Thank you for the walk through, she'll benefit from the concise explanation. BTW, I worked on a fishing boat during the summer of 1986 (yeah it was a while ago...) around the southern end of the Kenai peninsula. I made almost no $ but had the time of my life. EVERYONE who has the slightest interest in AK has to go and see that country!

Question. If you have limited population in an ocean zone and wish to migrate MORE than the available population to a separate ocean zone? Do you trigger the end of the game? The rules state that the ocean never runs out if population, but that the end of game reserves are only triggered when all ocean zones are empty. So if I wanted to move 6 from the deep zone to the middle zone. But only 4 were available. Would I move just those 4? Take extra from the reef? Or trigger the end of game?

Emptying out the ocean triggers the end round which is irreversible, but then you open the reserve, so that anyone who still needs to gain on the last turns still has available fish tokens to do so; so the effect of that is that there is never a situation in the game that someone cannot get the gain effect because the ocean is out of fish.

Hi Rodney, not sure if this has been asked, but when you have a few traits on a specie and you feed, do you add a 1 for each trait that does not have the red or green icon? Or do you only add the forage or attack traits when feeding or a 1 if there are none? Hope the question is clear, thanks for the videos.

@@WatchItPlayed I did, so when you feed you count the green traits together, when you attack you count the red traits together, when you have no green or red you add an inherent one. What happens when you have for example one trait with 5 green and a trait with nothing when you want to forage with a specific specie. Is it 5 or 6?

You play until everyone has had an equal number of turns. Let's say there were 4 people at the table, 1, 2, 3, 4. If the 3rd player empties the last ocean, than after player 4 goes, the game is over. If Player 1 had emptied the ocean, again, after Player 2, than 3 and then 4 went, the game would be over. In both of these cases, each player has had an even number of turns over the course of the entire game.

Okay, so I need help. I've played this a few times now, but today something occurred that sparked a discussion. So, I'll try to describe this as simple as possible, so the core of the problem can be understood. Basically, I got one of my species into a situation in which it could only feed by attacking one of my other species, but... And here's the problem: The species that should be attacked had a trait that prevented it from being attacked, while its population is equal to or bigger than 5 and the species had 6 population at that point. However, the attacking species had a trait that let it feed 2 off that species before beginning the feeding phase. The disagreement was about whether or not the "feeding off" other species can happen, even though attacking the species was not possible before the use of the ability of that trait. My point is that it should be possible, because after I apply the ability (that clearly says "before you start your feeding phase"), the species I want to attack has only 4 population at the beginning of the feeding phase and thus the attack is possible. My friends argued that since the "feed off" ability is a condition of the feeding of the species, the ability cannot be used to trigger the possibility of the feeding phase. Thoughts? 😅 (I hope this makes sense.)

Yes, it's there mostly as a reminder. Technically, you could fill the board up in any order, even covering the fishbones first, as long as you remember, that once the board is filled all the way and becomes overpopulated, you have to resolve the effects for overpopulation.

I gather lots of people prefer it to evolution since it feels less bitey since though everyone is actively engaged in eachothers turn an attack does not instantly kill a species you have time to recover so feels more fair whilst still keeping the tension going.
