Thank you! I love this game and had a hard time finding a good tutorial when I wanted to teach friends, so this one was a special project for me 😊

@@GamePointTabletop I love the theme of the game, and I was thinking about getting a copy. The only issue is that at a first look I don't see a great variety of strategies. Can you explain why it's not the case? 🙂

Happy to ramble! I find that there do tend to be certain tried-and-true strategies that come up regularly, but the other ~50% of the time, people are doing things more creative. A lot of the variety comes from the fact that you have to do your best with the cards you're dealt. So you can't stick in a rut using the same strategy game after game, because there's no guarantee you'll get dealt the traits that make that strategy work. And other players can always find a way to wreck what you're doing if they're able to predict it well, so you have to change things up regularly. I really enjoy messing with the climate to make it very cold so everyone else freezes and starves, while I set up with traits like long neck, scavenging, and fat tissue to survive with little food in the watering hole. My wife prefers to make several fast-eating herbivores with things like foraging and cooperation, then add tons of food to the watering hole. Those two strategies are opposite ends of a spectrum, but it's actually not just 2 strategies, because there are several different ways to thrive in a high-food environment, and several different ways to thrive in a low-food environment. And do you choose to lean into the environment you have and try to out-compete people there, or do you accept a round or two of lower scoring, to prioritize preparing for a big switch that upends everyone's strategies mid-game? To increase the variety, I have toyed with some house rules to make the climate track more volatile (i.e. add extra climate event cards if the original ones haven't been used by mid-game, or allow the climate to change 2 spaces in a single round if there's a significant majority in the sun/snowflake vote, or block off spaces where the tracker has been, and skip over those spaces if it moves back that direction). I haven't play-tested any of those ideas enough to give one as a recommendation, though. After all that, though, I have to also say that you might end up preferring Nature, the newest game from North Star that's on Kickstarter right now. It's a new implementation of this theme and mechanics with modular expansions so you can mix-and-match different traits, rules, and environmental factors each time you play. I play-tested one of the 5 available modules at GenCon and really enjoyed it.

Hello, would I be missing anything at all if I got just this game and not the original? Is it just an improvement compared to the first game?

Nothing at all. This is set up to stand on its own, and I do think it's better than the original. (You can also use a copy of the Climate version to play the original game. You just have to remove some of the cards and ignore parts of other cards that have to do with the climate. I've seen instructions online but don't remember the details) Side thought- you might want to keep an eye out for Nature, the next game from this same company North Star Games. It's not out yet, but it's supposed to be launching on Kickstarter later this year. It's a similar premise and similar gameplay to the Evolution series. I playtested a part of it at Gencon and really enjoyed it.
