Plus we don’t have to tip, we don’t have to make up what an employer should fairly pay their workers. Several times in my life I had to rent a room in a house. I did not blame my employer for my situation. I was grateful to be working. I saved what money I could, and eventually could afford my own place. Later on more shift happened, and I once again had to rent just a room. Life goes up and down. This is precisely how it struck me. Plus, the folks doing this are acting like being a coffee shop barista is a real career path. That is an absurdity on its face. That job, along with pumping gas or bussing tables and other jobs like those are entry level jobs. Only the workers promoted OUT of those positions get more money. It has been this way for a long time (I was a teenager in the 1970s and it was most certainly true then.. and MUCH before that). These kids can agitate, but they are making a mistake expecting the world to reorganize itself based on their fantasy of how it is supposed to work.

As a former Teamster I recommend staying away from any union. The only people unions help are the union executives and their families and friends. The rank-and-file workers pay dues for almost nothing in return.

People like this do not understand how expensive it is to run a business. Just because the owner has other investments does not mean that the coffee shops can afford the additional overhead they are asking for. His money is not in just one big pot to be pulled from. And, it's not just the wages, it's the taxes and other expenses that come with the higher wages. It's tough to run a small business these days.
