I used this method at Tahoe this last weekend thanks to you guys. It was much easier than hanging underneath gassing out my grip strength. Thank you!

I have used the underneath, pull myself along technique every time. Works like a charm. I can make it across in about 10 seconds that way while everyone else is struggling.

Failed this twice last year at Killington UB on my way to a DNF. Didn’t have technique on any obstacles really. This year I cruised right through this on my way to finishing the Ultra course for the first time. Thanks for all your videos. They really helped me accomplish my goal! Keep up the great work!

Damn! I should have watched this vid before the Killington Beast! I did the Monkey Crawl and got burnt out 2/3rds of the way up the Tyrolean rope for the fail! I’m going to work on Damer’s technique for the next Beast! You guys are the best!

Wow! Ok, right on, thank you for the heads up, that is good information. Seems pretty strict, but I guess the idea might be that if you brought it out there, you carry it the whole way through. We'll see what we come up against this season out East here and see if it's the same.

Another great video guys. I disagree with your take on the monkey crawl though, as I beat everyone who tries either example you show in your video. Dragging your legs behind, socks or calf sleeves or not is dragging your legs as dead weight and burns the arms out much worse than the monkey crawl, as well as being much slower since the progress is all arms. It may look ridiculous but By the time people get on top of the rope, I am done. We will be doing a test for time using all techniques with our hawaii spartan ohana team to see, with video if you guys want to see it. Keep up the great work and keep posting more vids, love the channel!!!

Right on! Thank you for your input! We appreciate sincere input, even if it differs from our opinion/experience. I think it's a healthy, value-add to have exchanges where readers/viewers can get what they need to have a good time and do well at OCR's . In the end, we are fans of whatever works, that includes the monkey crawl. If it works for you, rock it, and ring that bell!
@johnschaechter
@johnschaechter Жыл бұрын
I agree with you and strongly.Foot dragging is much slower and causes my arms to burn. But Monkey crawl is the way to go. If one practice it and get proficient. You are not going to fall. And you get one end to another quickly.

Thanks for the advice about avoiding burns. I still have a scar from last June's Spartan Super when I faced this obstacle.... and my GoPro fell off into the mud.... it's a kickass scar though.

OCR Kings thanks! The GoPro was totally fine if not a little muddy. Fortunately my buddy was there to pick it up for me! I definitely want to try the over top technique or at least have some socks on for the under. Lol

I used the on top technique last week and it did work. I did end up with rope burn on my chest and I was wearing a shirt. Do I just need more layers to avoid? Thanks guys!
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 9 ай бұрын
Right on, glad it worked! Yeah, more layers help and/or synthetic material like under armour compression. If it starts to get to hot, maybe slow down or pausing for a bit might help. Hang in there, hope your rope burn goes away soon!

Don't you have to worry about rope burn across your chest when you're on top like that?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 3 жыл бұрын
Not so much, your shirt generally protects you, and if it starts to heat up too much, you can always stop and just kind of lay there on top of the rope for a second or two.
@csherdel

I'm going to put one of these in my woods for training. What diameter and length of rope do you recommend?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 4 жыл бұрын
We use a 1.5" diameter rope. Spartan Race has been using smaller diameter ropes lately it seems, but you can't go wrong with 1.5" since you can find them anywhere. We got ours from Amazon.

@@OCRKings Thanks! I have an old rock climbing rope and a 1" regular rope. I'll use both to practice.

What muscles does this use? I have a very weak core so I'm afraid I won't be able to do this
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! On top of the rope you use a lot of core to stabilize and balance. If you go under the rope however, you use WAY less core and more arms/shoulders. Going under the rope is easier too if you're new to this obstacle.

what kind of upper body strength excersises would you recommend so I get the muscles necessary to do this?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 6 жыл бұрын
Developing your biceps can definitely help here. So can developing your back. Curls and chinups are simple ones for the biceps, pullups, pulldowns, and rows are great for the back muscles.

What is Mack wearing around his forearm’s?
@OCRKings
@OCRKings 6 жыл бұрын
Good attention to detail! On both arms Mack has a Bandit tennis elbow brace. Funny though, never played tennis. The baces are $17 on Amazon and help keep tennis elbow from coming back. www.amazon.com/Pro-Band-Sports-ABI00-Therapeutic/dp/B000FML7SW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1528222849&sr=8-3&keywords=bandit+tennis+elbow+brace
