How to play octaves on guitar and what is an octave for guitar.
This guitar music theory lesson has been added in response to a couple of people asking about the octave shape and octaves after viewing the lessons on guitar note names. Hopefully this guitar music theory lesson will clear up any questions you might have about what an octave is, howoctaves sounds on a guitar and how to play the octave shape on a guitar. Even if you don't want to learn the names of all the notes on a guitar, it is still useful to know some music theory and learning a little about octaves and how to play them on a guitar is essential knowledge for a guitarist.
The original guitar lesson links are here below.

Thanks! I was confused why it's called Octave, if your same higher note is on 12th fret and not 8th, but this video explained it so well, that it's not counting each note in music, it's within the main notes in a scale (Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti)

I'm a math guy, yet this makes a lot of sense, I think songs are a type of mathematical equations, suited to the human ear, I wonder how long it will take before musicians/record labels start using AI to compose songs

It's already been done . . There's a BBC documentary about how they did it but I can't find it. It was fascinating because they took it a step further and analysed what makes a hit and what makes a flop . . 😊

It depends on the number of frets on your guitar . . but 'N - 2 x 2 + N -3 ' or the number of Number of frets -2 x 2 = Number of frets - 3. 🤔

Sir , where do the octaves repeat from, like they repeat after they reach 12 fret or ?
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy Жыл бұрын
from the 12th fret you repeat the notes as from the open strings, so fret 1 = 13, fret 2 = 14 fret 3=15 etc. I hope this helps 😊

@@guitar-academy thank you for your reply , but i am still not getting it , like you taught , for eg - the next high octave of F( 1st fret 6 th string ) is F on 3rd fret 4 th string , but there is also a F on 8th fret 5th string , so why did it skip the cycle of that , isn't it should be the next high octave
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy Жыл бұрын
@@SupernovaTheWolverine4444 You've changed your question. . . This is an explanation of what octaves are and not a concise list of all the octave positions. If you understand the lesson you should be able to work the other octaves out be yourself.

Can I just play any octaves in a song ? Or will it base on chords?
@guitar-academy

any notes (octaves or not) you play in a song will have to be based on the key signature . . 🤔

hey man this really helped me understand it better, but i have a question that i cant seem to find on google. when i pluck one string, the frequency/pitch decreases: does that mean the gradual decrease produces other notes? for example can an open G string produce other notes (A, E, ect) as time passes after it's plucked. sorry if it doesnt make sense, im still learning haha
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 2 жыл бұрын
I am going to do a video on this soon. Yes, a note can go sharp when you first pluck it, but this means you're overplucking the string. Even if you play heavy metal with lots of distortion you don't overpluck the strings, you pluck them quite softly and the electronics does the rest. . . . so basically be more gentle with the guitar 😊
@chacha6438

So basically...If i go up an octave for a note it will sound the same but only the pitch/frequency will increase right???
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's correct . . but this also explains why the guitar has several notes with the same name 😊

Keyboards usually start at C. Pianos start at A
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 3 жыл бұрын
yes . . it tends to depend on how many octaves they have. I have an 4 octave keyboard that is C to C and an 88 key keyboard that starts on A and ends on C, but this is quite common. For a none keyboardist to recognize the pattern it's easiest to go from C to C.

Sir plz can u help to identify octave no.s ? For example : how can we identify a note F4 ? On fret board I don't know which F is F1, which is F2 ...so, I couldn't find a particular octave note
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 3 жыл бұрын
Why ? ? this is only useful on the guitar for advanced theory, most people don't need to know this. However the lowest F on a guitar is F2 (you can't get F1 it's too low). F4 is the 1st fret on the top E string . . I hope this helps.

Not really . . this video just explains what an octave is and give some exercises to get you use to hear the octave sound. Octaves are used all the time and it is not unusual to play them at the same time. 😊 I hope this is helpful

I would guess, it's generally when you talk music, it's 7 notes, Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti, without sharps and flats. In Hindi, it's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni, they are called Shudh 7 notes. Without Komal (flat) and Teevra (sharp), the in between half notes.

So,in majority a one set octave is defines only one key?
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 2 жыл бұрын
This is a hard one to answer because it's a yes and no answer, but here we go . . In most key signatures all the notes used in that key signature can be found within an octave. BUT An octave shouldn't be thought of in terms of key signatures as it only needs to speak in terms of one note and where that note repeats on the instrument.
@johndarylucmayon
@johndarylucmayon 2 жыл бұрын
What i mean is every single key has a lower and higher note for example from a piano The Lower key of C and higher key of C is both the same and that's an octave.
