Octopus Reacts - Halloween Special - Episode 10

Halloween is unlike any other holiday. Candies, costumes, Jack-o'-lanters, witches, ghosts, goblins ... and octopuses? Why not! Seeing as we all enjoy Halloween, we felt it would be fun to introduce our octopus to this magical holiday. There's nothing our octopuses love more than to participate in an episode of Octopus Reacts!
Michael, the big, beautiful octopus in this video, is faced with 4 Halloween items he has never seen before. An eerie zombie arm, a creepy Halloween mask, a kitchen knife, and a Jack o' lantern. Please note that at no time was Michael in danger during his time with the knife. The knife was far from sharp enough to cause him any harm.

I loved it when he imitated the hand in such a magnificent way! Wow! Is it me or do the octopussen seem to become more courageous with each experiment? Like they know no harm is going to come to them. In general, I get the impression they seem to prefer smooth surfaces. Michael seemed to want to drag the pumpkin with him in a very determined fashion. Sort like "I haven't figured yet how to get in it but I will and this is mine! Bless him! 💖

I can't decide if Michael is imitating the hand or reacting to its feel & thinking "yuck, that feels pretty gross." His reaction to the pumpkin was terrific. I enjoyed the exploration & "hugging" like he was making sure it was sturdy before he got in.

I love these videos more and more, I started to watch these quite a while ago because I thought it was a novel idea. But over time I have fallen in love with octopuses and their inquisitive nature! To me it's like watching a cross between a toddler and a dog but under water!. I would love to be able to get close to one, I wouldn't go as far as saying I would want one as a pet as I wouldn't be able to give it the space and decent replica of its natural habitat that I feel it would deserve, but oh boy if I could spend its lifetime with it I would jump at the chance!

They are miraculous creatures but since I’m terrified of even the smallest snake (or worm) this creature is just a bunch of snakes to me. But I love watching them. 😊

I can't stand snakes either. I can put up with a lot but snakes is one thing I just cannot tolerate. Don't worry though, octopuses are nothing like snakes. Snakes are vicious but octos just want to explore.

Have you tried to teach an octopus to read? like using big written words maybe food? I'll bet Rudy would learn which label meant his favorite? And I'll bet he will remember it for a long time. Maybe even for all of his, how did one film maker describe it? tragically short life. or the image match that chimps do much better than people.? less physical more mental. Looks like he got the spirit of the Halloween props. He curious but a little subdued and tentative? Except the pumpkin. he likes pumpkins. Ha. How does he react to fire? My favorite reaction was to the set when he first entered. He seemed to be pondering the big orange words. The impression I had was O--"What is the meaning of this.?" Surely he can hear you speak. Could a wild octopus understand that sound is used to communicate? Since any number of sea creatures do this to some extent, don't they? If their hearing is good, they would hear many sounds and would naturally be curious. I've had this conversation with a friend a couple times. Why do I think they can be so perceptive? IBecause a housefly knows when you are looking at it. I'm jealous. And I've seen that the octopus seem to enjoy the company of the people and even show affection.
